Good riddance to Windows 8

Fantastic info, mikedt! Very interesting stuff I wouldn't know otherwise. Thanks.

Please keep us posted as things develop, okay?

Sure...no problems Moody! ...I'm finding it very interesting of course, and these are exciting and rapidly changing times I think.

The story says this..."We hope to launch a Chinese-made desktop operating system by October supporting app stores," ...but as AFAIK so far, it's going to be Ubuntu Kylin. China tried to develop completely it's own Linux OS's before, Red Flag Linux, but that's dead now, and Kylin OS, and some of the ideas from that are going into Ubuntu Kylin apparently.

ubuntu kylin,

Thanks to android forums I fell in love with kingsoft. Love it better than msword for some reason when I use the msword it seems to change things and has very little meaning to it . but when I tried kingsoft wow very nice and user friendly and a readable ui. I think Ubuntu should run it all or miui they seem to be the best and longest working.

I tried Miui for a while, wasn't so keen on it, but I see plenty of Xiaomi phones with it though. I've been using Kingsoft myself for a quite a while now, that's good. The Chinese Oppo F7 phone I purchased some months ago came with something called ColorOS, which is another modified version of Android with it's own branding and identity that's available for other devices besides Oppo. But I found that to be horribly buggy and unworkable for daily usage, so fixed that by installing CyanogenMod instead. Computer wise, I'm using a cheap Lenovo laptop running Linux Mint, and a Macbook that my father gave me.

Can I ask do you like the lenovo PC. I had the tablet it had a firmware issue it downloaded 4.4.2 the download went good. Ui changed graphics was nice .after a week with the download I had to give it up. So I ask everyone who has lenovo how do they like there lenovo products

I only have a cheap one, an S110. It's dual-core Atom running at 1.66GHz with 2GB RAM and 500GB HDD running Linux Mint, but I really like it because of it's size, 10 inch and quite light, in it's bag it's not much larger than a 10 inch tablet, and it has good battery life. I've been using it daily for over two years for teaching, and have travelled with quite frequently, it's been to the UK three times. Lenovo is by far the most common brand of PC and laptop you'll see here, and most teachers and other people I know are using Lenovos, and they seem to be reliable.

Windows 9 may remove the Metro interface for desktop PC users, feature one-click upgrade process

According to new Windows 9 leaks and rumors, it seems we could be in for some dramatic changes by the time the first public preview of Windows 9 rolls around (probably on September 30). The most recent leaked builds of Windows 9 (codename Threshold) indicate that Microsoft will finally fix the awful upgrade process that has plagued Windows for almost two decades, replacing it with a one-click upgrade system. Perhaps more excitingly, another source says that Windows 9 will formally split the Metro and Desktop interfaces: Tablets will be restricted to Metro, while laptops and desktops will be locked to the standard Desktop interface. No longer will tablet users be forced to fumble around the legacy Desktop — and no longer will mouse-and-keyboard users be thrust unwittingly into various Metrotastic applets.

Go figure... others agree with me...

Linux Has Run Out of Time

Right now Linux on the desktop remains a cheap curiosity, that is kind of fun to play with when you are bored.

Will be interesting to see how China pushes ahead with desktop Linux, i.e. Ubuntu Kylin, as opposed to using pirated Win XP Pro with IE6 and pirated MS Office 2003, which is frequently been the usual system, even in corporate and academic environments.

..although they're starting to get a little bit better these days....

Percentage of PCs using IE6:

Argentina 0.8
Australia 0.3
Austria 0.1
Belgium 0.1
Brazil 0.1
Canada 0.3
Chile 0.6
Peoples Republic of China 12.5
Colombia 0.2
Czech Rep. 0.1
Denmark 0.1
Finland 0.1
France 0.3
Germany 0.4
Hong Kong SAR 0.8

All he basically said that Linux doesn't have the apps he need to get his work done with! That he likes Windows apps better then Linux apps.

I'm China many academic organisations have already ditched MS office in favour of WPS office, which is Chinese. And what's more WPS Office is available for Linux as well as Windows, in fact it comes with Ubuntu Kylin.

The whole thing is that just because *HE* isn't smart enough to get his stuff done with Linux, he thinks it CAN'T be done. It's not even that he prefers windows apps over Linux...he doesn't know there ARE Linux apps he could've tried using. His comment about 'getting by' using wine proves my point--wine isn't necessary unless you WANT to run windows apps instead of native Linux apps. Personally, I don't! So I've found the plethora of apps out there that do everything I need to do--and in a native Linux environment.

Are we still talking about Windows 9?
;)

I agree that Dvorak has some pretty sketchy reasons for his opinion of Linux. But that aside, I agree that, for Windowers looking for possible alternatives, the distros can't match up.

I've tried about a hundred and have narrowed it down to Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon, probably because it's the most Window-esque. But if a distro can't clearly outperform Windows, can't make Windows look relatively silly, tinkerers like me can never take Linux seriously.

I know Linux is actually better in some situations, but not mine.

This is where you lose me. Can't match up in WHAT WAY? Linux is:

. more stable
. more powerful
. more customizable
. more versatile
. more secure
. free of viruses, malware, adware, spyware
. doesn't crash
. doesn't need to be rebooted except for rare reasons
. is far more beautiful and interesting to look at
. has thousands of programs available for free
. doesn't keep its users locked into a never-ending cycle of shelling out good money after bad

In what way(s)? And why do you want a completely different operating system to be like another one?

But if a distro can't clearly outperform Windows, can't make Windows look relatively silly
Sorry, just scratching my head at this... :hmmmm2: Linux DOES outperform windows and DOES make it look not just relatively silly but VERY silly.

tinkerers like me can never take Linux seriously.

I can't pretend to know more about your needs, wants, and desires than you do, so I'll defer to you on this and accept that it's not for you. I just want to throw out, again, that my mom--who was in her 80s--switched seamlessly from two decades of M$ to Linux and did not even need instruction on how to do things. And she was THE MOST computer illiterate person I've ever known...and I've known a lot of them! (Had to support end users in my jobs.) Her only complaint: It's too fast! :D

At the risk of sounding like Dvorak, there are things I've come to depend on in my computer. For example, little things I keep running in case the need comes up, like ATnotes and Ditto, more I can't remember right now. But I guess what I'm most attached to is RollBack RX.

I'm not saying that stuff is not available in Linux, I am saying I did look but gave up. I'm sure that's partly because I bristle at using the terminal

That makes sense.

Well, at least I can say I tried, and I learned a lot, but nothing ended up changing on my end.

Oh, and I wasn't trying to compare the capabilities of DOS and the Linux terminal, just saying that they're both a pain in the arse, not unlike having to crank-start your car.

-edit-
Nevermind, now that I'm off mobile and in front of an actual computer with a keyboard, I can move this post's question to the proper thread myself. Don't mind me, guys. :)

I've been a longtime Windows user, from DOS5.0/Win 3.0 days up to now (Win7 & 8.1). BUT... I started playing with Linux (Ubuntu Dappy) and over the years have moved 95% to Linux (PCLinuxOS and Mint, mainly XFCE DE) and I've converted a couple of XP users to Mint since April as they didn't want to replace their PCs. They were amazed at how much faster their PCs ran with Mint LXDE.

I have a question its about windows and dell tablets . I know this maybe off topic but it fits in this window discussion.

Now I just brought a windows dell venue 8pro tablet . I noticed the tablet CPU was moving very slow WiFi drops a lot or shall I say restart . so I did a number or factory resets to the tablet. So I finally go to the area where the make model and etc. I noticed that my new tablet doesn't have what I brought and paid for. Now I know some people know that dell has had some CPU issues with the the Z3740D so they changed to the Z3745D back in may 2014. But wait dell cant say everyone uses the tablet the same way so they just cheat everyone with the smaller CPU . I am asking this cause my CPU is Z3740D if you request for a new CPU on a new tablet is this wrong thing to do or the correct thing to do I feel I need the newer CPU z3745d .
