Google has a lot to learn IMHO.

i have to agree with several people on here. I feel like they could have done a lot better job at announcing this device. I get a feeling now that they rushed it just because they were being pressured. I still don't understand/agree with why they did it from Hong Kong...i would have rather waited another few days and had them do it in the states.

At the same time i do agree that the Nexus phone isn't meant for the general user.

Hardware announcements for 2011 sucked across all carriers, OSs, and whatever. If there was one that you could call a success (meaning it was more than expected), then that would go to the SGS2 outside the US.

Hardware (from a VZW stand point):
iPhone 4S: Basic update and no innovation from the iPhone 4
Thunderbolt: whoopdee doo
Bionic: What a waste.
BB: No phones that I am aware of and many abandoning the OS
MS: There are a few Mango phones, but nothing spectacular.
Galaxy Nexus: Leaves a lot to be desired by pinching pennies. Should have built it right and charged more. This could have been the first phone to truly impact iPhone but won't
Razr: Nothing spectacular or drastically different than the Nexus.

Software:
ICS: We'll see. It needs to get to the user friendly level of iOS. Android is still a lot like Linux vs Windows.
iOS5: Another update to a user friendly OS. Too bad it is on very down level hardware. I might have gone this route.

I'd rather not defend VZW...but u have to look at the Big picture here...

The TB was the first LTE 4G phone in the USA...so some issues were there. But from a speed point... it showed alot of people how fast a phone can be data wise.

The Charge was a decent phone...while not the prettiest ...it was good enough for they're second LTE push.

RIMreleased the Bold 9930 and whatever you think about them....its the Best BB ever made and is still seeing very strong sales 2 months after its release.

As for the iphone 4s...let me say this,,,
Its the best 3G phone to ever hit this side of the pond. No its not revolutionary...however it carries serious pedigree, has the best camera present on a phone in the USA, some of the best and appealing hardware, and has the support of a company that takes updates and customer service very seriously...

The Bionic was a BUST, I agree with people who say it should have never been released at all after a 9 month wait!

On to the Razr...
Jeeeeez,,,,That thing is going to sell like hotcakes....they wont even be able to keep them on shelves...the hardware looks amazing, the UI that moto puts on rocks, and alot of people are cool with getting a stable version of Gingerbread on a seriously sexy designed phone.

Last...The Galaxy Nexus...
I like others was not blown away, however the Big picture is that its a developers phone, and will be incredibly popular with the Geek community, which is growing bigger and bigger with every Android device sold to people who like to tinker with they're device. Point blank...It will be a popular device for the next few months..

So looking at the BIG Picture...Vzw is doing just dandy when you really think about it!

Ohhh, and they are the only carrier that offers real LTE 4G speeds at the moment..

I would agree with almost everything you've said here, except two things: I'm not convinced that the ip4s has the best camera out here in the U.S., and two, I'm not convinced that that Razr camera will be all that good as Moto cameras have proven to be very lacking (so I find that "amazing hardware" claim a little doubtful).

Maybe because more people on that side of the world use Android than do on this side. I read an article yesterday that says 52% of people use Android over there compared to 43% here........maybe they are trying to make a big push over there, since we've been getting most of the Android attention.

That and I think there is at least some friction between VZW and Google/Samsung. Plus I think Hong Kong is about as "neutral" a location as you can get for a "world" launch.

nice stat. I guess that could be the case.

+1 to what VS said about moto cameras....they're garbage. I'm so frustrated with my camera on the DX lately. Until someone does some good hands on review of the Camera on the RAZR i have to believe that they are last in the camera dept. ...

But the nexus line doesn't cater to masses like the iPhone does. ...
...

While this was true in the past, I'm not so sure it is true anymore. I know the original intent of the Nexus line was to provide a pure Google experience for developers - and I believe it still is now with the Galaxy Nexus.

But in addition to that, I don't think it's unreasonable for Google and the carrier/vendor to also want to get these to sell like crazy. I don't think they are mutually exclusive things. After all Verizon passed up on the Galaxy S 2, which was SURE to be a super hot selling phone, to get this. I believe there is an expectation nowadays that - while this is still a developer phone at heart - the Nexus has also become something more. a great piece of hardware/software that they now want in as many consumers' hands as possible. I'm not naive to think that the RAZR won't be marketed by Verizon way more than the Nexus. But I still think that in late 2011, the Nexus has become more than simply a developer phone ..

I agree on the camera issues...my Bionic seems to get worse with every passing day.

Google has a great product in ICS and the Galaxy Nexus, and I'm definitely going to get one, no doubt. But then again, I've always been an early adopter, I'm not the average consumer.

Only early adopters are getting upset about the release dates. The average consumer will not know that the Galaxy Nexus exists until there are prime time commercials about the phone.

There are many things Google can learn from Apple, but release dates are low on the priority list. The Nexus line of phones need to develop its brand awareness and cult following before they will be given the attention of the iPhone.

If you think about it, people look forward to the new iPhone being released because the announcement and release of the phone is covered by the mainstream media and not just tech blogs. Android phones are generally only covered by tech blogs. I'm sure that the unpacking even being canceled and relocated to Hong Kong went largely unnoticed by the general public.

Apple is a hype and marketing machine, it is one of the reasons they are so successful at releasing things that already exist and getting people excited to buy them. It is also one of the reasons smartphones aren't just for business men and women anymore. If Google really wanted to they could put an ad the latest Nexus phone in the search results for everything and anything you search in order to build hype and interest, but they don't do things like that. While they are a marketing giant, they are more interested in doing the marketing than trying to market their own things.

i have a theory - Google doesn't want to push and market the G-Nex too hard. why? because they don't want to alienate and sabotage their hardware partners. they don't want to cannibalize all of the other hordes of currently selling Google phones out there. so Google WANTS a soft, ambiguous launch.

Or....

Maybe ICS isn't exactly ready for prime time yet!

Or it comes sometime in Nov, like Google and Sammy said! They have us by the jewels until Nov 30th....pathetic isn't it?

Because people are anxious and when no information is present, we try and work that information out for ourselves. It's how humans work.
