Google Maps 5 is Out

How do you get 3d buildings? The compass mode is pretty cool, not too sure what the "tilt" gesture would help me out with though.
3D buildings are only available in some places, I guess, like Downtown, LA or someplace important. I really haven't looked into it too much...

You have to go to one of the cities that supports it, and then zoom in really far. It isn't that impressive...at least without tilt.

I am running the stock CJH7 and downloaded the new Maps without a hitch. With the Satellite layer unchecked, I can zoom into downtown Dallas or DC and see the 3D buildings. I can also tilt the view by dragging two fingers up or down on the screen (thus displaying the height of structures). Also, it may be something I missed before....but in streetview mode, the phone displays the view from whichever way the phone is facing, instead of having to touchscreen the panoramic view.

Got a reply from a Google employee:

"Hi all

Just wanted to update. It appears that rotation gestures for Galaxy S series phones require Android OS 2.2 (Froyo) or Galaxy S series phones require Android OS 2.2 (Froyo) or later and won't work on Eclair/2.1. Apologies for the lack of information on the 'Supported Devices' article - it's been updated.* updated.

They are slightly wrong. I have a stock Captivate and I was able to get the new 3D feature and rotation to work. It is very sensitive though and hard to turn on though. So 2.2 is not needed but it might make it easier to turn that feature on. It is okay but not worth the fuss IMO.

hi everyone. i cant get the 3d/tilt to work at all for me. ive tried in manhattan and in la and its not working. any ideas?

Does anyone know if you can re-calibrate your compass? It told me to make figure eights with the phone (what?). I did, and the prompt disappeared. BUT ... the compass appears to be off. Parallel to the road, it shows me almost perpendicular. I'm not sure why, but perhaps I need to re-do the compass... except I can't find any way to do this.

Delete the app data for Maps. The next time you open it up and go into compass mode, it will have calibrate again.

Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications

Does the new maps app seem to make street names disappear when moving around for any of you? It's very annoying to me that it does that. I might switch back to the older version. I can't have the street names disappearing like that when I move around on the map.

Does anyone know how much map this new version will cache? I'm traveling out of country & it would be handy to use maps with no data use

Ok so no one else is noticing about the text labels disappearing and then reappearing while moving around with your finger? It did not do this behavior before, and it's very very annoying to me, while moving around on a map. As soon as you start moving the map, even just a tiny bit, the text labels disappear. Many times the street names will actually change position on the slightest move for me.

I went back to 4.7.0, hopefully they'll fix 5.0, because I like some of the other features.

Nothing disappears on mine unless a label hits the edge of the screen, then it moves. I don't think that would be considered a problem.

i cant find it is it in the market or do i have to search on browser...new here and to android thanks

LMaxwell, are you running 2.2 or 2.1? I wonder if my issue is with Google Maps 5.0 on Android 2.1, I'm still running stock. I don't care about this twist rotation, but I cannot have the text labels disappearing.

The offline directions feature really helps me out. Dont have to use data plan or gps while moving.

Sorry I missed this. I'm completely stock, no 2.2, no root.

It's strange, I've installed the 5.0 update a bunch of times and it still gives me this weirdness with the redraw on the text labels being very slow. The old version of the maps had the text labels more "sticky" than this one. It made the maps program easier to use. It's really apparent in the street level on Manhattan.

add this to the list of features we are missing out by not having froyo.....

True..but I still cannot even put my finger on 3 things that froyo provides, that would make the Captivate on 2.1 a no go or deal breaker. Reading these and other forums, one would think froyo is the second coming
