Help google maps running all the time?

Ok so i've noticed that google maps is constantly running in the background. I looked in some other forums and there are a few people that have posted about this but no fixes. They seem to have noticed it when they updated to the 3d maps update. I'm not sure if that's what happened since mine came with the update and i really haven't checked till now. No i'm not logged into "latitude". Even if i kill it, it comes right back in a couple minutes. So is anyone here having or had this issue? Any suggestions on how to fix?

I'm having the same issue. I have a thread in the DX troubleshooting forum but there has been no help. Mine only comes back a few times a day if I kill it but it is holding a partial wake lock on my phone when it is up. For the hell of it I wiped my battery stats yesterday to see if that was the actual issue.

Is it the maps or the network location. Quite a few apps need network location to update weather, location etc.

No, it is maps. It is listed as maps in both Spare Parts as well as the moto battery manager application. I even disabled geolocation in my weather applications.

interesting...I check mine and it was running but I killed it and it is off. I checked my battery usage and it did not seem to be draining any battery power? I refreshed weatherbug and set it locate and update and it did not come back. I opened maps and it stayed on after I closed it so I closed it again. I will check it when an automatic update comes to see if it stays on.
For me anyway it has been on since I unplugged the phone 3 hours ago and it does not show up as using any battery in the battery usage stats?

I've killed it before and it comes back. For me it seems to be 2x a day and it was reporting as partial wake usage and it was right below screen for battery use and I had not even opened maps at all.

ApeX 1.4.1

EDIT: it just came up again and shot to the top of the battery list with 7% since unplugged 4 hours ago. I'm not going to FQ it this time and see where it settles.

Interesting turn of events. It looks like the problem is on the surface and not actually a problem.... at least for me.

When I open the battery manager via switchpro it doesn't refresh. When I unplugged this morning it showed maps at the top of the list and I left it. After 8 hours it still was at the top, but the unplugged time was still 30 min. If I open through the battery manager in settings it refreshes properly and maps is way way down the list. I wonder if that was my problem all along. I'm going to monitor for a few more days.

From home screen do this
Press menu button, select settings, select applications, select manage applications, select google maps, select clear data and then select force close.

I did this and my battery got drastically better. But you will have to do this everytime you use your google maps or associated apps. Yeah it's annoying to have to do this but it's worth it for the extra battery life. I did this about 10 hours ago and it hasn't come back on. I dropped 10% over 2 hours instead of 20-30% and that was with a couple 5 minute phone calls and a LOT of texting, lol. Hope this helps as it did me.

they are having some kind of issues they need to fix.
i was on the 342 leak and my navigation started force closing; i thought it was the leak.
went back to fis261 and the same deal.
started reading through reviews and they are hacking a few people off with some issues they need to fix. close to just uninstalling it.

An update. I left my phone charging when i went to bed and checked before i plugged it in that google maps wasn't on and it wasn't. When i woke up unplugged it and checked again and it was running. I cleared cache and force closed and it hasn't come back on yet. I'll check after some quick charges to see what happens.

Just because you are seeing in memory doesn't mean it's "running". Stop trying to kill it and just let android manage memory on it's own. It likes to load things in memory just in case. That covers most of you.

If you aren't actually using maps but you are seeing it in the battery stats, only then may you have a problem. For those people, if you start with a fresh boot and don't start maps or navigate manually, are you still seeing it in battery stats or partial wake usage?

i am...

without touching the app, over the past few days i've had "Maps" listed as using about 5% of my battery...

not a big deal as far as sucking battery, but the idea that its using battery when i have not even tried to open it is worrisome

I'm seeing it in battery stats as well. I think that is what most of us are seeing and that is why we are killing it. Spare parts also listed it as a partial wake lock. I got into work this morning and checked my phone. After 10 min of being unplugged maps was at 45% battery usage..... above the display. I know that is a short amount of time but maps shouldn't have even been running.

I'm thinking of starting from scratch this weekend and see where it goes. I've already reinstalled it to see if that would resolve the issue but so far it hasn't

There are others reporting it in the market reviews, seems a few with the dx
