Help Google Maps shows up in Task Switcher list, even when not used

quickaudi

Android Expert
So, I was scrolling through my open apps by hitting the Task Switcher button the other day, and I noticed that Maps was on the list. Definitely weird as I had not used the app recently, and the screenshot of it was black (blank.)

Swiped it to the left and assumed that had fixed it. Well, checked back later and it was back, showing the same black screen!

Restarted the phone several times over the last couple of days, and it always shows back up. For kicks, I turned off GPS; no dice.

Using Activity Express Manager earlier today, I found that 6 instances of Maps were showing as open.

Any thoughts? This "normal"?

It's the Google "Location Service" I believe.

Go to Settings > Location services and uncheck "Google's location service."

When you use that service, you are agreeing that Google is allowed to anonymously collect location data even when no apps are running.

BTW, I came to this conclusion by using BetterBatteryStats - the "NetworkLocationActiveCollector" (which is listed as one of the items consuming battery) is governed by the Maps application.

You know... I think I missed that you were seeing it in the "recent tasks" window.

I don't see that on mine. It's always in the list of apps using battery, and BBS shows it as generating some wake locks, and it's always in the list of services that are currently running in Android... but I never have it show up in my recent tasks list unless I've actually started the Maps application.

Actually I was going to post about this same issue, as well. Just started in the past week. And its not due to the google location services being checked because mine has always been unchecked yet google maps shows up even when I havent opened it up.

Same for me. It seems to show up randomly in the Task Switcher.

I did have Google location services checked, but have just unchecked it to see if that makes a difference.

Will definitely report back if I see it show up again.

Hmmm, so after turning gps and all of those options off, if i turn them back on and gps on, the gps signal turns on and the gps symbol comes on in the status bar and doesnt go away. Didnt do that before...

Just something I noticed today when looking at running apps (and I've read others complain about it), the google maps traffic updater widget keeps a constantly running service too. Even if you don't have the traffic widget running.

Might I suggest that if you have a service running that you feel should not be, there is a "report" button on the screen for each app that is running (right next to the stop button). Maybe if enough people complained about it google would take a look-see.

Hi guys... I'm new and hoping to gets some answers. I'm using Android Task Manager and I'm seeing some apps always showing up even if i didn't open it or used it like (circle launcher light, volume control + and colornote, yahoo mail and yahoo messenger) any explaination or any idea how to prevent this from happening? I'm afraid that its causing my battery to die past and eat up memory...

Samsung Galaxy Nexus rocks!!!

Might want to do some reading into how Android OS manages memory. It is normal for several apps to be open in the background.
