Google Wallet - No Root Needed :)

I just got my Gnex last week (GSM version from Google) and just got to try out this app today using the prepaid card. It made me realize that Wallet that I access online through my computer and Wallet the app on my phone are two entirely separate entities. I was hoping to top off my prepaid online but that account doesn't see anything from my phone account. Seems a little out of touch with the other Google services which let me see the same info whether I'm on my laptop or phone.

No longer the case. Even if the workaround method is used to install it through Google Play, the Wallet app no longer is listed on Installed apps. While the work-around method continues to work for me to install and update Wallet on my stock Verizon Nexus, I have to seek out the updates manually.

Hmmm, I wasn't aware that was the case. Where/how do you "seek out the updates manually?" And how do I tell if I'm up to date?

Edit to add: If I go to the market via my PC it shows Wallet is now compatible with my VZW Gnex. I'll have to go to the bathroom (for the signal) in a bit to check via my phone.

I would think you would be able to manually add your other card. You can try calling customer support, perhaps they can help you link the accounts.

yeah, I just ran into this myself :(

after reloading my phone, it says there's a update, but when I go to update it says not available for my phone :(

So, in addition to what I posted above, I verified that no, GW doesn't show up in My Apps when I go through Play on the phone. However, if I go through my phone using the browser method originally used to get GW installed, it shows that it's compatible (in browser) and installed (in Play). Also, I have automatic updates checked.

While I can't see it in My Apps, an in-app check (settings->about) shows the same version number (1.1-R57v5) as the April 13 update on the market.

So it seems that if you can use the browser method to get to the app in the market and set it to automatically update, it will stay up to date with the latest version.

what is the "browser" method>? I remember seeing a post but I can't find it :(

Thanks!

I hadn't been following closely enough on the issue. Crap does that suck.

I just took a look and while it didn't show up under "Installed" in My Apps I was able to go to "All" where it actually did show up. I hit the update button and it updated for me. It still isn't showing in "Installed", but I am now using 1.1-R57v5.

So I just spent about 20 minutes trying the "trick" no luck. I can get the screen where the install button should be, but no button there :/

checked it under all apps, while it shows up the only option is to uninstall :/

I was able to restore a titanium back-up to get to R57, I'm concerned about the future updates though, oh well guess time will tell.

So to get mine to update from v4 to v5 I had to go to the browser play store, then when I clicked on wallet, chose the play store app to open, I was then given the choice to update.

Awesome! I guess we'll just have to keep an eye on the store version and compare it to our installed version to make sure it's still updating in the future.

Every time i've tried to use my $10 from google, at stores i know and they told me can accept it, the transaction goes through beeps vibrates says payment accepted, then about 5 seconds later it says transaction rejected or cancelled. The 3 places i've tried they told me other people have used it so they know it works just can't figure out why mine won't.

I tried to use my Google wallet at a restaurant, and got a peculiar error that I haven't seen before. It said RFID not supported on the paypass reader. I don't know if it was my phone/ROM's fault, or the paypass readers fault.

Browser trick no longer works. Did the trick for my friend in March when she got her GNex. Tried it a few days ago on my GNex and it will go as far as (sometimes) Wallet's permissions screen but there is nothing to tap on to go any further...

for everyone who is looking for Google Wallet on their phone i posted this in another thread

"I side loaded THIS APK yesterday... i have no banner or errors so far. i got my free $10 (again) from google and and seems to be working fine. i havent bought anything yet but all the other functions are working flawlessly"

Is this the community modded one circulating on XDA?

I've used it to buy stuff. Works just fine.

slightly off topic

I cracked up at the in your face shameless product placement when I watched 2nd to last episode of Fringe last night.

guy uses it to pay for a cup of coffee then 1 minute later hes dead from spontaneous human combustion. Not too sure if that's good advertising ;-)

PS If you are not watching Fringe. Start at the begining, good stuff.

So my fun Wallet story today. I use it to get a coke out of the paypass equipped vending machine in the breakroom at work. Well today Verizon had a table in there for whatever reason, and I had gone over to grab some free LTE Swag (and complain that I don't get LTE in the building). Well anyways while talking to the guy, I made my way over to the vending machine and swiped my phone, and you should have seen his face. He knew about it, but had never seen it in action, and was shocked at how easy and quick it was. I made sure to get a quick rant in about VZW trying to block Wallet, although the ability of this guy to do anything about it was approx. zero. :D

I saw that. My wife laughed at me when I did a little happy dance and then told me not to ever buy coffee with it.

this is working and fine SirKronan.. there are no issues at all with it

Appreciate the response. I can't get it to work with my AOKP ROM at all. I'm having other problems with my Nexus these days though, so perhaps something else is amiss. I keep dropping Verizon's data. Gets really annoying when I need to use voice dial or voice search and it says "no connection" or a similar error message. I need that stuff to work on the spot due to the nature of my job. Texts and voice ALWAYS work fine. Why do I sometimes lose my data? I'm not tethering or anything either.

Frustrating. Wallet just sits there on the initialization screen until it force closes, and it makes it so I can't even get in to change NFC settings. The settings "app" freezes when I try. I uninstall wallet and I can get into all setting properly, but regardless of whether wallet is installed or not, I'm having signal issues.

Phone is noticeably more stable across the board when this Wallet apk is NOT installed. Sad, because it always worked fine with Codename.

Dredging up an old thread here with some news:

I am running Jelly Belly JB ROM, Wallet apk sideloaded, installed and loaded with money. Wallet has a v12 update in the Market as of TODAY!

I went to play.google.com on my PC, not my phone. Logged in and hit "Install". Selected "Samsung Galaxy Nexus" and hit okay.

Play pushed the app to my phone and Wallet updated! :D

Maybe it will or won't show up in Play on your Nexus (especially if you're on Verizon), but try this if you want the latest version.
