Google's talk of creating multiple nexus phones?

I don't quite understand this. Why is it being called Nexus?
Is that what the phones are going to be called? They already have phones called nexus. I'm on it right now....
Nexus just the name google is using for their phones?
 
Nexus is the name Google uses for it's in house produced phones to herald a new version of Android. Basically, it's the iPhone of Android. Previously, they only had one version at a time, by one manufacturer. Now, they're looking to open it up to others. Personally, I'm excited at the idea!

I'm not all that excited, I'd rather Google just focus on one phone to perfect. Look at the GNex, it has some pretty big connectivity issues along with other minor issues. If they start making more than one device, I can see those devices having even more bugs.
 
Well, Google doesn't actually build the device. They take 'bids' from the manufacturers who lay out what specs they will use and what the design will be. Google then decides which one gets to build based on the 'bids'. Then google "works closely" with the manufacturer to optimize the device to work with the latest OS.

I like the idea of multiple Nexuses. Imagine 4 different manufacturers all releasing a vanilla build of Jelly Bean (Android 5.0). Hate Samsung? Get the Moto version. Love HTC, get the HTC version. Maybe one will have a 5" screen and another a 4.5". Your choice. Prefer Pentile or LCD....

More vanilla android devices is awesome. Choice is always better for consumers.
 
I honestly think the reason Google is doing this, is because manufacturers are complaining that the winner of each generation of Nexus gets a head start on incorporating the next version of Android into their handsets. Samsung being the first to release ICS in their phones kind of bares this out.

By doing it this way, Google will give equal opportunity to every manufacturer to get their hands on the next version, as long as they make a Nexus phone meeting Google's requirements. This will be good for everyone IMO (except carriers), Google gets more phones with the vanilla experience out in the world, developers get a choice on hardware, manufacturers get next Android version earlier, so earlier release of version updates on existing phones, and new phones with that version. And carriers lose power. its win-win for the consumer as far as I can see it.
 
Anti, I'm not sure I agree. I thought the manufacturers were in love with putting their own skin on their devices and not so enthralled with Google having so much control.
But, I have to say, it definitely is a win-win for everyone. (but, like you said, not the carriers).

Oh I believe they are, but with how time consuming it is to skin a new version (especially ICS), and the highly competitive nature of the world of mobile phones, the manufacturers need to get at the new version sooner and sooner, and this gives them a way to do it, as long as they throw a bone to google and manufacture a nexus.
 
i just disagree with it all together.

Most people are forgetting that all of the Nexus devices coming out will more than likely not be available to CDMA customers. Not to mention if they were look at where we are with the G Nex....oh btw i got my third one in yesterday and it still doesn't pick up signal either. ..even with a new sim as well.
 
I like the idea of different manufacturers making more than one nexus device. I do worry though that none will be compatible with Verizon. I have the galaxy nexus and love it. I rooted it and installed a custom rom and radios and I don't have any of the problems with connecting to data or dropped calls. The reason I went with the nexus was its ease of rooting. I think it just gives consumers more choices. Like I said though I just hope they make a cdma version as well.
 
If Google does do this, they can't have carriers do like what Verizon did to the Galaxy Nexus.

Verizon-"Pure Google experience" Ya and Paris Hilton is a virgin who can use Google wallet on her Galaxy Nexus from Verizon. (Without flashing, rooting etc. to her phone cause we are all assuming she's too dumb to figure that out)
 
I like the idea of multiple Nexus devices. What would be the plural? Nexi ?

Anyways, this allows for multiple form factors with the vanilla Android OS and ecosystem. Imagine seeing a slider, slab, and different tablets available from different manufacturers. While I'm currently on VZW, I'm fine with US CDMA networks being excluded. It wasn't until I went overseas, did I realize the benefits of GSM and Eurasia CDMA networks. I like the flexibility they have overseas to move from one carrier to another, if you're willing to pay full retail. Speaking of retail pricing, if Google list the devices at a decent middle range (like the current GSM G-Nex), I'm all for it. Now if only T-mobile could get a nice investment or "partnership" from Google here in the states. I don't see that happening, but one can dream.
