Root Got the 20120704 update to install w/o wiping data

DBHALL

Newbie
I was able to install the newest OTA update using the following method:
1. Download the update
2.Using a file explorer, make a copy of the file from your downloads file
3. Move the new copy to the root of SD card.
4. Rename the copy PH44IMG.zip
5. Turn off phone and pull out battery.
6. Reinstall battery and boot into HBOOT by holding volume down and power buttons at the same time. (This will put you in HBOOT )
7. WAIT until HBOOT finds the PH44IMG.zip file you made earlier, and it should automatically parse the file. If not, when HBOOT finds the file it will ask if you want to install, select yes by pushing the volume up button.
8. Your update should now install.
9. Reboot, go into your file explorer and DELETE the PH44IMG.zip file and your good to go!
Special thanks to, Apache Thunder and Mark112887 for their help 

I have tried this multiple times & every time it does not work it aborts, however I took a peek inside the OTA update & I believe that we can put the pieces where they go, the only thing I wasn't sure about is inside is a the update the firmware is in zip & inside is a boot.img
hell I'm gonna put it in a flashable zip & flash it & see what happens.

Don't you mean UNLOCKED ? Except for that damn S-ON. Like I said gonna shove the update into the Minimal Kingdom rom I'm making, oh was wrong on the type of image it is, its a recovery image not a boot image. Might have to split the image.

the reason that everyone is getting errors is because the instructions listed are not the ones that I have followed in order to get the update to succeed

To anyone who has figured out : howabout a direct link so we can download it to our pc's or phones than the correct steps to take so we can keep our root ? Please ? Pretty Please ?

Here are the correct steps

1. Download the update
2. Press install later
3. Copy the zip from your downloads folder to your pc
4. Once done flash stock recovery then do OS update
5. Back on PC open the zip file on your PC
6. In there you will see a firmware zip file
7. Copy the firmware zip file to desktop and rename PH44IMG.zip
8. Restart phone and boot into HBOOT by holding volume down during reboot
9. WAIT until HBOOT finds the PH44IMG.zip file you made earlier, and it should automatically parse the file. If not, when HBOOT finds the file it will ask if you want to install, select yes by pushing the volume up button.
8. Your update should now install.
9. re flash CWM

You will be good to go, I am not sore if hboot is updated using this method but i know the OS is

The part you forgot to include is if a-you lost root after flashing and b- if so, were you able to regain it and how?

dOES ANYONE HAVE A LINK TO THE STOCK RECOVERY? I WANT TO UPDATE, BUT CANT FIGURE OUT WHERE TO FIND IT.
THANKS IN ADVANCE. didnt realize caps lock was on. sorry

After you flash back CWM Just reinstall the root zip and you have root

Are you referring to the superuser zip from ChainsDD?

Not trying to be annoying, just trying to get specifics. Details are important when it comes to this stuff as even one tiny mistep has the potential to turn your nice shiny into an expensive paperweight or undo everything else you've done and cause a time intensive do-over.

I couldnt get it to work. I was able to flash sotock recovery with no problem, but it all went downhill from there. kept getting the red triangle.

I don't think hboot will allow you to flash the hboot partition. S-off is needed for that. All the firmware.zip does in this update is update the hboot and recovery partitions. The OS update you can run once you are back to stock. When you go back to stock be sure to run a fix permissions operation in CWM BEFORE you flash stock recovery back. Then relock bootloader, then run the update. Since the update updates the hboot partition, you will most likely need to relock the boot loader for that to work.

So to sum things up. Go back to stock OS, run fix permissions. Then run backup of that with CWM so you can go back to it after unlocking the boot loader again (since that will wipe your personal data).

Then flash back stock recovery and relock bootloader. Then run the OTA again (by simply leaving the zip file in the downloads folder and manually checking for updates). After that it should then successfully update the hboot partition.

Then unlock bootloader. Then re-flash CWM back (remember once updated you will need to update the version strings in the ph44img zip files or you WILL get a version is too old error!). After that restore your CWM backup and you should get your personal data back + the updated Android OS.

Since I have a deodexed rom, I most likely will have to lose my personal data to have this update. I will skip it for now untill a de-dexed rom with the July update makes an appearance. :P

ok, i did it this way and it worked. im updated, and have re rooted.

i backed up my original Stock rom which i had removed some bloatware.
when i first tried to update, it wouldnt work. im assuming because i had missing bloatware, so i installed a full stock rom.
after installing the full stock rom, i was able to update with no problem.
my question is......if i restore from my original backup, will i go back to the system without the update?

If you made the backup prior to running the update, then restoring it after the update will end up rolling back your update to pre update. :P

so if i start all over again, will i lose my settings and personal data, and apps if i install the stock rom over my backup?

Yes correct. Make sure to backup the rom after you installed the update. Then once you reinstall stock recovery, lock boot loader and rerun the update to update hboot, then you can then reinstall CWM again and restore your backup which should return you to the updated OS with the updated hboot as well.
