Root Greetings (newbie here!)

check your browser settings? what are you using? link is fine as it worked on my phone(dolphin browser) and pc(chrome). so not sure what is going on for you. out of curiosity why do you need it?

have to put stock rom back on to get phone repaired

Rxpert hit it on the head. Mac tries to be to pleasing to make up for the fact that it sux :D Seriously though I remember someone with a Mac saying there is a way to turn off the open zip automatically thingy in Mac.

ok so i'm confused. when you download the PC36IMG file, it is automatically unzipped? and you do not need to open the file if that is what you are doing. just download the file rename the file and move it to the sd card.

ok so i got my phone unrooted and going to get it fixed. can i root my phone again with no problems?

any roms and kernels suggestion. using mik roms right now

well roms are all matter of opinion. and it depends on wether you like sense or aosp (android open source project). if you like sense then i really like the elite series iv by diablo. tommy's rom is pretty good as well. if you want sense 3.0 then mik3d is great. for aosp, there is deck's, cm7, xplod and also all of the ICS roms that are out now.

best thing to do really is to just make a nandroid backup and start flashing some roms. go over to xda and check out some of the roms there. but before you go flashing away please read the op for each rom. there are tons of info there including the changelog.

and as far as kernels go, again that will depend as kernels all react differently on different phones. but to give you a starting place try the aggressive universal freedom kernel for gingerbread sense and for aosp try the tiamat sbc kernels. again it is a good idea to make a nandroid backup before flashing kernels. also always give the kernel a few days to settle in before you decide to move on.

here is a nice list of roms. it is not quite up to date, but i will try and work on it soon enough. http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html

hope this helps.
