Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

Okay, I got the issues solved from my previous post, and I'm loving my phone now. If anybody has the same problem I did (Doing EVERYTHING correct, step by step), and you get to the point where you select "Data" and check "Disable internal /data" under "KoumaKernel settings", but when you reboot, your phone will not advance from the KoumaKernel bootup image, here's how I got past that problem.

I used to have the Samsung Galaxy 2 (the sliding keyboard multimedia phone, NOT Galaxy S II, the Android), and I loved having a large MicroSD for music and photos. But I realized that with larger storage sizes, it would actually cause problems with the phone. So that's how I came to the conclusion that MAYBE I shouldn't be using a class 4 32GB MicroSD in my Galaxy Prevail. So I re-flashed CTMod and KoumaKernal, formatted my class 10 16GB MicroSD, partitioned 4GB through CWM, booted up, and went through the steps in the CTMod settings. And guess what? My phone booted up with my "internal storage" being the partitioned 4GB on my MicroSD!

So, in conclusion, I hope this can help somebody. If you're having trouble, and you're using a 32GB SD, step down to a 16BG SD, preferably a higher class SD. That might help.

is this really the only solution for using 32GB cards? I JUST bought this class 10 32gb....

no one else has a workaround for this?

seems like $20 down the drain. lame.

I also have a 32GB/class 10 card and it works just fine with CTMod and Koumakernel !!

But I'd buy your card for $10 ! Grinzzzz

Did you use the method in this thread verbatim?

if I check the 'Show Log' in the same menu as the 'Partition SD card', it has errors shown (typed as much as the screen shows, as it cuts off on the right):

creating fat32 partition...done
creating ext2 partition...Aborte
/sbin/tune2fs: No such file or d
e trying to open /dev/block/mmcb
Couldn't find valid filesystem s
done

err: /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 does

Done

Thoughts on how to fix this? bad sd card? I can't think of any other causes.

hey guys, I just bought my Prevail Monday, and it is running Gingerbread FF19, I want to root, and I've found a lot of useful information so far, but I just have a few questions:

1. Does the one click root work for FF19? It seems to be the easiest method, so it'd be awesome if it did.

2. I've downloaded Odin Multi-downloader 4.43, FF19 ROOTED, and STOCK, and Odin Prevail Winpacker 3.0. I unzipped FF19 ROOTED, and I found more zipped files in the Rooted+CWM folder. Do I need to unzip those files, or should I leave them as is?

I'm really new to all this stuff, so I'm sorry if I'm asking dumb questions.

I figured it out!

_____NO

_____The rooted Odin image.zips should contain the version of Odin you need. The zipped files in the ff19 need to stay zipped (actually i believe they are .tar, but none the less) there should be the .ops file phone.tar pda.tar and boot.tar

Those are the files you need for Odin.

I'm really new to all this stuff, so I'm sorry if I'm asking dumb questions.

There are no dumb question s, just people to dumb to admit they do not understand. ;)

I could use alittle help. I am rooted with kouma kernel 2.5 ct mod. I cant get my phone to boot. It gets stuck on the kouma kernel 2.5 screen with the red circle with the triangle in the center of it. What do I have to do. This has happened to me before in the past. Usually I keep taking the battery out until the damn thing loads up. Well now I have been doing that basically all day for 2 days now and it just keeps getting stuck on the start up screen. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks peoples

Do you have a backup?
You could restore that to see if it solves the problem.

What mode are you using for koumamod?
Is your sdcard partitioned correctly for that mode?

what did you do/install/remove/flash before you started using this problem?
Did you switch modes, without wiping your sdext? (if you change modes then you have to wipe you sdext)

Thank you for the reply LordVincent90. I do have a back up somewhere. How do I restore it? I do believe im partitioned correctly. It has kind of always froze once in a while. I dont usually ever turn my phone off but where I live I get no signal so if I dont plug it in when i get home it dies like within an hour from no signal. In the past when it froze i would take the battery out turn it on and it usually boots up always the second time. In the last couple of weeks its been getting worse and now it just stays frozen. What do you mean by switching modes? And what is the sdext, and how or why should it be wiped. Also hopefullt i didnt screw it up more but in a desperate attempt to get my phone on I wiped the dalvik cache or whatever its called. As far as what was the last thing i was doing(downloading music) that isnt what caused it, it has kind of done it since I rooted but always rebooted right away after taking the battery out./ I really appreciate your input, thank you very much

I still cant turn my phone on. Someone help me please.. Do I have to restore it to factory default, can I,Should I,How do I ? ? ?

from a powered off phone, hold volume up and power until you see clockwork mod recovery (since you didnt know how to do that, im going to assume you do not have a backup)

then using the volume keys to move, and the camera to select, select factory wipe, then yes.

how did you partition your sdcard? it isnt automatic, you have to do it yourself.

a sdext is the name for the partition you create on your card to hold your data and is what allows koumamod to work. there are many tutorials on how to do this in various ways here on the site.

i think you may need to step back and do a bit more reading before just jumping in with both feet.

if all else fails you can return the phone to stock using odin and then just start over from scratch.

its not broken, you just havent properly set it up to use koumamod.

i would bet the card isnt partitioned, and that is why it is getting stuck at the koumakernel logo... it isnt able to mount the sdext to put data on it (because there isnt one ;) )

Finally got my Prevail rooted from WinXP. I discovered that if I slowly put the data cable in, that I got USB connectivity. Which I never had before. So I tryed to Root it again for the 20th time,...AND IT WORKED! Thanks to [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail for Dummies (written by a dummy. And the following files, (SPHM820_FE16_ROOT_CWM.zip), and (SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.exe, (Sorry don't remember where I D/L them from)). So with just those 2 files, and following what was on this page and the ("Odin thread", where the page tells you to go). Now I need to find out how to get rid of those annoying System updates every hour or so. And also to get schooled on what to do next for Rooted phones. I just don't know how to act with 161 meg vs 20 meg on the root drive. I just last night started playing with Titanium Backup. And so the adventure begins. PS Anyone with the ABC's of what should do next, please drop me a line or post it. Thank you all, for your hard work putting the prevail root package, info, etc together. From a grateful recipient.

this is one way to get rid of updates, if flash ctmod or cm7 or so they also never get updates

don't install from sd card install from zip file.

I recently partitioned my sd card and now that I am trying to flash fe16 with odin it says failed partition size too big. should I repartition the sd card? and if so, to what size for the primary partition

Why does the Prevail have to be from Boost? I want to use the cheaper PlatinumTel, which uses the Sprint network. Is this guide useless to me?

odin has been at "system.rfs download.." for almost an hour now.. did i mess something up or does it just take that long?

--nevermind, something happened with the original download, re-downloaded and it worked.

try it without the sdcard in the phone?

I get a big partition message every time i use Odin, but it still finishes. (I'm almost certain that Odin doesn't even look at the sdcard tho. )

Reboot phone
Reboot computer

Try a different cord
Try a different port
Try a different computer
Try a different phone :p

Are you using the version of Odin included in the images in the Odin thread?
Are you sure the computer is reading the phone?
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers?

How old is the phone?
Any damage?
Does usb mass storage work?
Could even be a broken usb port, in which case there is no solution sort of repair

also, don't expect answers to be immediate... Sometimes we just done have one.

Patience is key...

I used to use the version included but with the fe16 I downloaded odin wasn't included. I'll try it again

Don't unzip the file, put the single zip file on the SD card unopened

Each carrier changes the phone software to suit their needs, and if the roms aren't specifically made for the carriers software, it will not work.

can somebody help me I want to install this beats mod how do I do this my phone is rooted. http://androidforums.com/galaxy-pre...tmod_3-3-drebeats-1-3-1-updated-mar-20-a.html

Not sure 100% but go download CTmod 3.3 from the CTmod thread, install it using clockworkmod, then install the beats theme the same way. That being said, The beats audio mod doesn't seem to do much more for sound that you couldn't get from an equalizer off the market. I personally use PowerAmp

So, after spending some time browsing through the forum, I've decided to not go to FF19 at the moment. I've not actually gotten an update notification, my phone is running super-stable, and there doesn't seem to be much interest. I've read where there is a way to switch basebands without wiping the whole phone, but it still won't fix the build.prop reading fe16. I recall once writing out how to do the build.prop tweak, i need to find it.

Edit: I found the build.prop tweak, and several other doohickeys, so I made a new section in the third OP on updates and added them to it. I also discovered that my build prop has ro.build.version.incremental= as BDCT for the update version number. It makes sense, the boost updates are from one version to the next (FA19 to FE16, then FE16 to FF19) and if theres no update from BDCT to anything, it can't update at all. Clever bloodawn.
