Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

How do I change my kernal or is it the rom, which ever one that changes the appearance. I mean I have koumakernal 2.5 but I want to try one of the other one's. also how do I return the phone back to its original rom. I want it to stay rooted. Im haveing an issue where several times a day I have to reboot my phone because most of my apps just start force closing after I open them. You guys have been great. I lpove learning all this stuff and showing off how my boost mobile phone blows there Iphone out of the water, lol. Thanks everyone

Now my phone wont even turn on. It gets stuck on the kouma kernel 2.5 screen with the red circle. Please someone help me. I tried to go into recovery but it says can not mount sd card. I took the card in and out after taking the battery out again. I tried to partition my sd card again because I know it would reformat the card and i was thinking maybe I put to much crap on my phone. I need help please.
I tried this also with no such luck:

in cwm,
advanced> wipe dalvik
Then in mounts and storage> format sdext (still in cwm)
Then reboot... And wait at least 10 min before calling it a fail

if you messed with the card and all maybe just have to use odin and redo everything.

Ok, so I rooted my phone and followed all the instructions on page one about a month ago. Rooted, partioned SD card, great! sunday I saw ROM update on my phone just as it was ending. Like an idiot I didn't do anything, turned my phone off. Next day, all I got was the Kouma Kernal screen and nothing else. Someone suggested I reflash CTMod, which I did. Unfornately didn't back anything up before the crash. Lesson learned. reinstalled apps after flashing CTMod. then got the message low on memory and noticed that when I reinstalled apps they were being stored on internal memory instead of the partitioned SD card. Then noticed I hadn't clicked Data on the KoumaKernal settings. so I did that and rebooted. Lost the few apps I had installed (yes I am an idiot). But I after rebooting (after checking Data on KoumaKernal) I reinstalled facebook and it again installed on my internal memory and not on my partioned SD card. Any suggestions?? Is my SD card still partioned from my rooting a month ago? Or do I need to redo that? On the KoumaKernal setting it has swap settings at 60 for swappiness. Does that need to be 0?? Sorry, I will probably need step by step instructions on how to fix this. still learning my way around. Thanks!

I'm assuming my sd card is still partioned, because it says I have 417mg of internal storage. But why aren't my apps automatically dowloading to the sd card like before? help

Wow! It was SOOOOOO much easier rooting my phone and putting CTMod on it following this tutorial then any other one ive seen so far. Thanks bro =)

it might not have been working right before. because data or ssm makes part of sd card internal. and shouldn't see them on sd.

I had like 40 apps on my phone before and worked great. No I put like 10 and I get a low memory message. I can't figure out why its different. I reflashed CTMod with Koumakernal. I'm stumped. Can I keep redoing the partition of the SD card to see if it works like before or does that screw up the SD card?? repartitioning the partition??? I don't quite understand how it works I guess.

if you repartition, it will wipe the card. when you redid everything did you repartition? and if so you have to choose data or ssm then reboot before installing any apps.

Step four: The white checkerboard icon in the middle is the app drawer. Go there and open settings, then CTmod settings, then Koumakernel settings, making sure to click "allow" when the superuser prompt pops up. You will have three options: None, Data, and SSM. For our basic setup, we will be clicking Data. This is what turns our SD-ext partition we made earlier into internal storage. Also make sure that "disable internal data" is checked (thanks kouma)

Hi, all! I'm new here so sorry if this is not the proper place to ask this. I've been searching the forum for other posts and couldn't find one that addresses my problem...

Many many months ago, I had problems sending & receiving MMS messages. SMS - no problem. After Boost tech support failure, I did my own research, and downloaded APN Manager and put in proper settings that I found on a forum, and all was resolved.

A couple days ago, I followed this guide and rooted my Prevail. Love the extra memory and the stock apps being gone! However, I find that I cannot receive MMS messages from people not on boost. I can send to Boost and non-Boost people. I just received one from a person on Boost. However, I've had 3 people on different carriers send me MMS messages and I have not received them.

I went to the market to download APN Manager to find that the only thing out there now is APN Manager Pro which costs a buck or so. No problem, they helped before, so I bought it hoping it would have the same effect now. Unfortunately, it didn't help my problem. I'm still unable to receive MMS messages.

Anyone else experience this after rooting and installing CTMod? Any solutions?

Never had this issue on CTMod but I'm on CM9 at the moment

Its because theres a known issue with cm7 not being able to receive mms while wifi if turned on. Try to turn it off and see if you can receive them then. The only thing you can do if youre on cm7 and want to receive mms is turn off wifi everytime you get a mms and then turn it back on after.
Im pretty sure its the same with cm9 as well.

Hm. I tried turning off wifi and having another test MMS sent - nothing. Thanks, though! Maybe I'll backup in the process and have test MMS sent each step to see where they stop.

Hi -

I followed the directions at the beginning of this forum, and everything worked out fine. CTmod was installed successfully, and I now have an extra 500 mb of internal memory.

Many thanks to those who have developed the mods and written the corresponding walkthroughs.

However, I've experienced a number of problems throughout the last few weeks since I installed this stuff, and I'm hoping that at least some these can be dealt with:

1) I'm getting a lot of errors regarding: process com.android.mms . This always seems to happen when I try to attach a file to an outgoing message or download a file a file attached to an incoming message.

2) I can't get wifi tether to work. I've tried several apps, but it simply doesn't work. The phone can connect to my laptop, but it won't grant internet connectivity.

3) No bluetooth. Not extremely important, but it would be nice if I could used my earpeice in the car.

4) Sometimes -quite often, actually - after rebooting my phone, it freezes on the koumakernal splash screen, and never loads into CTmod. A reset always fixes it, but it is a little disconcerting. Is this normal, or does this indicate that I screwed up somewhere in the installation process??

5) Lots of various "force close" 's. These usually are not a major problem, but, again, they can be a bit frustrating at times.

So...I love having the extra internal memory, and, for the most part, everything works great. If somebody could just help me with the first and second issues above, I would be quite happy to just endure the other three. Having trouble with message attachments really sucks.

Thanks!

use this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether in settings set device profile to Samsung Galaxy Indulge

If you still do not get internet access, download terminal emulator, open it and type
Code:
 getprop|grep dns
Then in the wifi app scroll down to the domain name server section

and change preferred dns and alternate dns to match what terminal put out.

3) No bluetooth. Not extremely important, but it would be nice if I could used my earpeice in the car.

-Not sure on this one, iirc, it worked fine for me-

4) Sometimes -quite often, actually - after rebooting my phone, it freezes on the koumakernal splash screen, and never loads into CTmod. A reset always fixes it, but it is a little disconcerting. Is this normal, or does this indicate that I screwed up somewhere in the installation process??

A few people have said something about it getting stuck on the kk screen.
-Are you on data mode? If yes:
----did you install the newest koumamod app?
----If you didn't, did you check the box for disable internal memory?

5) Lots of various "force close" 's. These usually are not a major problem, but, again, they can be a bit frustrating at times.

What specifically is fc'ing?
Are you using a theme?

Finally....got my desktop fixed. Damn power supply started to go out, and I've been trying to diagnose it for weeks

Anyway, I'm not sure I got the grasp of SSD mode yet. It is running fine on my phone, but I can't tell any difference in performance. I think I'll just leave the guide on /data mode for now, but if someone else wants to do a writeup on it, I'll be more than happy to link it.

Thanks as always to Cwhatever, my second-in-command of dummies. Also thanks to LordVincent, whom I now proclaim to be Vincent, Lord of Dummies. May you always be smarter and more useful than me!

First of all, thanks for the prompt and detailed reply. Your suggestions for problems 1 and 2 were effective solutions. (I did have to download the terminal emu to to adjust the DNS settings.)

As for "4) Sometimes -quite often, actually - after rebooting my phone, it freezes on the koumakernal splash screen, and never loads into CTmod. A reset always fixes it, but it is a little disconcerting. Is this normal, or does this indicate that I screwed up somewhere in the installation process??

Yes, I am in data mode, and "disable internal/data" is checked. How can I tell if I have the newest koumamod app installed??

And as for "5) Lots of various "force close" 's. These usually are not a major problem, but, again, they can be a bit frustrating at times.

Are you using a theme?"

Unfortunately, I haven't done the best job of keeping track of when I get force closes. Sometimes when I open the camera app...sometimes when I'm using Chrome....sometimes when I'm using Google Play. And, no, no theme.

Anyways, you already solved my two worst problems, for which I am grateful. Any other suggestions for the remaining problems would just be bonus.

Thanks.

If you had to check the box to disable internal data, it's not the newest version.

http://www.mediafire.com/?vx1ij4j4a73oajy <--- newest version. (i think there is an issue where blooddawn resigned kouma's app so you can't just simply install it. So you should use an app like titanium backup, or root uninstaller to remove the existing one, and then install the new version (preferably as a system app)

Hmmmm, i have not personally had those issues. Perhaps somebody else can chime in.

No problem. :-) that's why we're here. Any other issues, don't hesitate to ask:thumbup:

Android noob here. First of all, thanks for the guide, even with problems my phone is significantly improved over stock. I followed it without issue about two months ago and eventually figured out how to get TeleNav and Google Talk back. Two things are bothering me though: 1) Since rooting I've completely lost my GPS functionality. 2) I don't understand what I am supposed to do to upgrade to the latest version. I reboot the phone and make backups (I think those are CWM backups) and I run Titanium Backup frequently to make sure I can always roll back. I have read this thread and the other rooting guides, I guess the information just doesn't click with me. Thanks in advance for any help.

You just need to download the newest version of ctmod.
Then in cwm, select install zip from sdcard> choose zip from sdcard> select the file you downloaded> select yes.
THIS WILL WIPE YOUR USER DATA
When it reboots, sign into your Google account, let it sync and reinstall your apps (preferably through the market) and you're good.

The newest ctmod can befound in the first post of THIS thread.

AS for the gps issue, i assume your are using data mode? that was an issue with a previous version of koumamod, where if you didn't check the 'disable internal memory' box. Which, in the newest version, is checked by default and should have no issues with gps.

okay so I love my rooted phone....notification its a stock update. dang just did this on 6/30/12. please don't tell me samsung is changing something else. what do I do to update.? so I dont have to look at the notifications every 10 minutes . thanks in advance

you can use autostarts from the store and never get any again. or just use a root explorer and can get rid of the system folders where it would go and never see them ever, or ct mod stops them too.

1) For the GPS problem, there should be a toggle for it in the notification bar. If you have it turned on, and access google maps, it should start scanning. There may be three notifications asking for permission; allow them, starting with the bottom. That may be why it's broken. (Protip: Google maps has it's own built in navigation that works fairly well, no need for a second app)

2) To update simply repeat the steps in the guide for that particular mod, replacing the old files w/ new ones. For example, if you need to update CTmod, just flash it in clockworkmod. You can get away with restoring apps with titanium backup if you need the data from them, but don't restore any system data. Its best to just redo everything fresh.

If you check settings - about phone - baseband version and it says FE16 at the end, you're good. you just need to delete the leftover update file from the cache. If it says FA19, (or anything else) you can update by repeating the steps of the guide, or disable it using Cwhatevers Autostarts, or changing the build.prop. Lemme know if you need help finding something, i'm sure one of us has wrote up how to do all those things

Wow! Awesome job on this thread! I just got around to reading it.
Lot of good work. Thank you.

What took you so long?!?! :D
