Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

THE FIRST BOOT AFTER YOU SWITCH TO DATA MODE COULD TAKE AS LONG AS 10-15 MIN

Step five B: if the phone gets stuck at the koumakernel screen ( and by stuck i mean for more than 15 min )
Reboot back to Clockworkmod Recovery (by holding volume up + power until it reboots). Select the "mounts and storage" option and then select "format sdext" NOT SDCARD once it finishes, press the back button and select "reboot system now"

What do you do if you get hung here every time you reboot? I've tried to format the sd-ext partition and it still hangs. I have a 16gb with a 2gb partition setup. I've let it sit for an hour or better and still no boot. Can i just reload the rom and try again? Also, many thanks on the excellent guide!

It might be that your sd-card does not work with the Prevail.... Not all cards work with the Prevail.... I have several different cards that work, and one sd-card works everywhere else, but in the Prevail..... Or your card is getting bad....

Try a different card....

Well, I do know the card works with the Prevail as I've had it for quite some time and was using it prior to rooting. One thought was, I did the partition, but don't recall seeing if anything should be mounted. Or does the KOUMA Kernel auto mount the ext extension during the process. FYI, I don't know if this helps, or if anyone has had a similar issue with the card, but it's a 16GB Class2 PNY card. I got the card because it was specifically rated for phones when i bought it a few years ago.

A class 2 card is realllllllllllllly slow..... you might want to upgrade to a 16 or 32GB class 10 card..... ( real cheap right now, like $20 or so ). But cards do go bad with time, even if they work in other devices like computer or camera, they might not work in the Prevail anymore once they started going bad !!!

No mounting necessary, the ROM does that for you.

What he meant was it might not work with this modification. Some cards just will not work with data mode. This doesn't mean the card won't work for storage.

Hi, new here. I have had my prevail for awhile now and it is running CTMod 3.68 with KoumaKernel 2.5. Not sure what version of cwm I have. I want to partition my sd card to use the data featue on kouma kernel, but reading through the many pages on this thread it seems people with 32gb sd cards have issues. I'm running a 32 gig and really want to free up memory on my phone, it is the last thing i want to do. I also dont want to downgrade to a smaller card though. Any help appreciated!

Its not generally the size of the card, its the CLASS (speed) of the card. A 32gb card should work just fine as long as the class is high enough to run data mode. It can't hurt to try... Just remember the partitioning process erases the card so back up all your files first and give it a try.

If for some reason your particular card doesn't play well with data mode, just restore the backup I know you will make prior to trying :)

Ah, ok. I believe mine is a class four. If the partitioning works, can I restore the data I saved to pc from the sd card before it was wiped? And if I do, should this be done before or after enabling data mode. Sorry for all the questions , just being cautious lol :)

Yes you can restore it.

It doesn't matter if it's before or after. (The phone doesn't know the difference :p )

And ask away. Better safe than confused ;)

Ok one last question. I think I may have used titanium backup to "integrate dalvik cache into sys rom" by accidental click. Should I undo this or does it matter. Thanks for the quick responses, hope im on the path to more than a few apps :p

I'm not sure as i don't use titanium, but I don't think it should matter. But just to be safe, is there an option to 'undo' it?

Followed guide and it all booted back up very swiftly. Internal memory is way bigger :D. About to get my apps and stuff back. Thanks for the great guide and help!

Is it safe to move apps to sd card via settings after the data enable process?

It would be redundant (and actually counter productive). You would be moving them from the sdext to the main part of sdcard. (Taking up space for storing files/pics/music/etc instead of leaving it in the special partition created to hold apps and data.)

Hello I recently tried this but not all things would communicate but I recently purchased the prevail 2 and really want to root it any ideas on how to start I'd appreciate any help guidance

The prevail and the prevail 2 are VERY different devices. You need to look in the prevail 2 section. I'm mobile right now, but when i get home I'll post a link to the correct section

Here's the link to your devices section

And here are instructions to achieve root

Hi again I need help with my prevail :/ My phone has been working fine since I enabled Kouma Kernel's data mode a few days ago. But today when I got home I left it alone for a little while and did other stuff. When I picked it up again the touch buttons at bottom were sort of flashing every so often and the screen was black. Now it wont boot past the kouma kernel screen and I'd hate to have to revert it back. Any help is appreciated!

:hmmmm:
I'm not exactly sure what the problem is... But for starters you could try to reboot into recovery (cwm) and format your cache and dalvik cache (dalvik is in advanced)
If that doesn't work you may need to factory reset and try again.

If a factory reset files the problem, but it happens again later, i would suggest getting a different sdcard.
