Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

Having issues! My phone doesn't work, it's popping up that all 'systems' have stopped unexpectedly. If I tap 'force close' (I don't have any other option really) It just pops up another 'app' or 'system' shut down...basically it's a paper weight. I tried to 'restore' but I guess I've done something wrong. THere is NO CHANGE to it. So, Could someone please help me!



I also want to add..I just rooted my prevail for the first time less than 2 months ago, and my SD card is new 16gb class 10. Could it be bad?
 
I think something is wrong with my Superuser...someone please just walk me through how to restore to previous state. Thanks in advance
 
Did you create a backup once you installed ctmod? If not, then you can just reflash the rom and that will allow you to start over.

Just start back at chapter 3 and you will reinstall the rom and you can start from scratch.
 
Well , I tried to reflash it..and its a no go..now im getting 'can't mount sd card", Im not sure what to do..it wont back up, restore, i cant install zip..NOTHING! :( Im so sad...As far as I see, when I try to 'restore" it goes through the motions then says error with sd.ext...
 
Ok, while in cwm, mount usb storage.

Do all of your files still show up?

you could have corrupted your sdext some how, or the whole card could be going bad.

Edit-just reread your post. If your backup is restoring, I'm going to assume your files are intact.

Try doing an advanced restore of /system and then a factory reset

If your files are there when the card is mounted, try formatting the sdext.

If your files aren't there you could try repartitioning the card...

But, remember, this will delete everything. (but if the files are already missing, then it can't hurry anything)


Edit2-if the card won't even mount now, then the card is probably corrupt :(
 
Yes, I'm thinking card is corrupt..not sure what made it happen, so Ill go buy another one and try again :) At least its just a mere card replacement..thanks LV So for now, I have my old crappy SD card in to at least make phone calls.
 
Hello again. I got another SD card and data mode has been working great for about a week now. Is it safe to use titanium backup to freeze, backup, and restore apps with data mode? Seems like a foolish question, but wanted to make sure. Thanks!
 
Yes. As far as the phone is concerned the sdext IS the data partition. (which means all your apps will treat it as such)
 
Ok, so I've gotten past partitioning the sd card, but when I go to the CTmod section I can't find a working download link. Can I use my phone as is without the CTmod? I'm not sure that partitioning sd card worked either... it said "done!" but when I turn my phone on it doesn't seem to have changed anything. I'm a bit of a noob, but I don't want to have to learn tons of technical stuff, I just want more space on my phone :/

You don't HAVE to use ctmod. There are a few other roms that support extended storage as well. Cm7 is a prime example.


Flash these zips in order, and install the app at the end of the list for the full list of themes available for use with theme chooser.

On the other hand, you can just simply root the phone, install es file explorer and link2sd from the play store. Link2sd gives you a way to use some of your sd as an extra data partition, but you'll need to partition the sd card before hand into 2 partitions, one being ext, the other fat32, iirc. I don't have the phone any more (daughter has it) and I moved on since, but that's pretty much what I did before my development laptop died with all the kernel sources and patches for the phone.

So I got everything all downloaded and installed and works great! Just one last question... How do I make it show the bar with icons at the bottom of the screen?
Still trying to figure out what kind of theme I want. lol

i don't follow... Do you mean the dock (the icons that stay on the button even when you change to a different home screen)?

If so just press and hold an app and drag it down to the bottom
 
Hahaha OH!!!! Blonde moment! I didn't see that the dock was already there but just didn't have any icons in it! Thanks for your help!
 
this is great I had a nearly flawless root and it's my first time.

After resyncing with the Play store and rebooting, I still cant seem to download anything, but I'm getting texts and I have service.

EDIT: After backing up and rebooting again I'm getting downloads but very slowly

The play store is likely just updating. Once it finishes it will download as expected

it could also be slow because your contracts and accounts are syncing

Also, welcome to Android Forums :)

That works fine now but something is terribly slow about the whole phone it seems, especially when texting. A letter can take 3-7 seconds to appear.

It's much like the phone was pre-root, just slow and unresponsive at times with a tendancy to crash apps or drop a connection, so any advice is welcome.

I've installed a few useful apps but I'm new to them all:

CPU Master
Battery Saver
Smart Profiles
CPU Master free
SD Booster (def saw a difference)
Links2SD
Titanium Backup
Busybox free (no idea what Im supposed to do with this)
Cachemate

go to settings> applications> running (tab)

At the bottom, what does it say for ram? (free and used)

I only have CPU Master free sorry
Busybox was not already installed :(
what's wrong with Smart Profiles and Battery Saver? They were rated two of the best apps for rooted Droids.

127 used/ 105 free after sitting awhile. Hit Advanced Task Killer Free and its: 118/136

Looking at the running apps I wonder,
Do i really need Google Play Services?
And why is the Ice Cream Sandwich Keyboard 15 friggin Megs?
