well good for you!!!! with installing apps you would need a rom to have more storage space. and make a backup in cwm and save to pc. always make them when going to make a major changes. the roms have kernals in them to give you more memory.:D

Yep I did the partitioning of my sd card so I'm set with more space then I need.:)
 
Help! I have done this process and everything is great until another update comes. Then I have to wait for someone else to make an updated ROM. My old classic droid allowed me to root it and then all updates would happen seamlessly. I don't want other roms. I just want to root my phone so I can do all my own tweaking. Is that possible with the Prevail?

Yes. Just stop after chapter one. But two things...
-Once rooted, if you remove even ONE system app, ota updates will fail.
-if you update ota you lose root.
(also, the community here is incredibly fast with updates... Once Samsung pushes it, our guys take it, rip it apart, root it, fancy it up and publish it... Oh, and they make sure it won't hurt our phones either. *cough*FA19 fail*cough*)
 
Okay, I've had my prevail for a couple of months now and I'm so tired of seeing that stupid notification "low storage" or insufficient storage space. I love the phone for now and all I want is more storage space and maybe try and speed things up a bit. What all do I need to do? I've read many posts and get confused somewhat at what I actually need. I'm running android version 2.3.6 and just done the ota update to FE.16. If anyone can give me some advice and point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. If you need to know anything else about my phone just let me know and I'll give you guys more info. Thanks so much in advance and I'm positive that my phone will be rooted in no time due to all the great people on here..... :adore:

You would need to root your phone with odin. and then install a rom that supports apps and or data sd. First thing is to root your phone. Follow the directions me or somebody else will walk you through it.
 
Oh hey look! Created an account after having my phone for a month to give proper thanks for the guide on rooting this little devil. Having under 1/4GB of internal is a freaking joke.

Anyway, my question is similar in terms to dbertles. I'm staring at that pesky 'Update Available' screen and I know that doing so ends up bricking the internal GPS. Learned it the hard way.

However, I completed my root out to step four, and want to keep it that way. So my question is what do I need to do in regard to installing the new 'update?' I'm stumped and am getting tired of staring at that notification.

Hey thanks to all who contributed all this wonderful work.

I have been wrestling with that low phone space message since I got the phone a year ago. Never could get that one click root to take on my phone. This method took me less time to root than it did to figure out how to post a thanks in this forum (and I have a little experience with forums and no experience with android os).

Here is the install autopsy for those who might come after;

1 - After Chapter 1 Step 8 is complete I think you need to unplug the phone (see in Chapter 2 Step 3 where it says to plug it back in?) :D :D

2 - to get back the Exchange account sync feature that came in the phone you must reinstall the email in the Removed apps on the CTMod page, follow the link in Chapter 3 (sorry I can't post links yet).

3 - I believe the phone also came with a full version of the Think-Free Office app but I have not yet figured out how to get that back without buying it. I will take any advice on this ??

Lastly I have a couple of questions to make sure I don't screw things up. I am geting this annoying reminder about a system update. From what I have read in this forum I should decline the update and wait for an update to be posted here in the forum. Correct?

If I do have to wait, is there any way to turn off that reminder? (It keeps popping up at the worst times)

PS if you do have any advice it need to be in the clear-cut style of Chapters 1-3 for it to be of any use to me, I have no idea what I am doing or what most of this terminology means yet. Thanks in advance :P)

edit; sorry i must have been typing when ingtail posted the question about the updates notice.
 
Damn update notification...

I'm currently the flashing the new update w/ Odin and wanted to share a protip:

Make sure you are in the correct folder.

I just totally flashed fa19 like a newb. Apparantly you have to change the folder from the old update to the new update for every button you click. And as always, backup and save to computer.

In other news, I'm currently dealing with an issue with CTmod/KK where after a week or two, restarting the phone will cause every app on the SD partition to crap out, and the only way to fix is to do a clockworkmod restore. I'm not sure if its my SD card itself or something else. I've been running Xiialive beta to listen to internet radio at work, so it might be causing it. I'm going to start running halfassmod 2.0 on the new update and see if it changes anything

Anyone that feels like it can go through the guide here and update to halfassmod as well; its the same process, just with the new files. Or go to the links posted by Cwhatever to stop the update notifications until blood gets a new CTmod ready.

Sounds like you're using Data mode without checking the box for disable internal /data. I've discovered that there is a race condition in gingerbread.
the init process mounts the internal /data and then immediately overrides that with the sdcard. In that very short window, apps can start saving settings or try to access files that exist on one partition, but not on the other. I think the best thing to do is for me to remove that option in future versions of koumamod

Now I am confused. The solution you say is working for you in the link you provided (in quote above) appears to be the same solution that is proposed by Lordvincent in the link in my previous post. That solution is, to use auto starts to disable Google framework update notification.

There is another more complex solution that involves some file renaming being discussed in the CTMod 3.6 thread that seems to deal with the update question and another issue, but that does not yet appear to be fully resolved.

Am I missing something?

The auto starts work for the last update I'm still waiting to see if it's going to work for this update, the command changes what everybody is using for this update.

I'll give that a try. I figured it was just the new SD card being flaky, hence why i haven't posted about the issue. Thanks a billion kouma.

You're referring to modding the build.prop. Its not difficult. there should be a guide for it somewhere if you can search for it, or I'll write one up when i have time.
 
Thanks for this great guide and the hard work by all the devs! Just rooted my prevail, got 4 gigs of internal memory now and on some tasks (like bringing up the apps to pin one to the desktop) its even faster than my T-mo G2 was. Getting happier with Boost by the minute!

Ok, maybe another stupid question, do I need to use the SPHM820_FE16_STOCK.zip or the SPHM820_FE16_ROOT_CWM.zip. I just don't want to do it wrong right off the bat. BTW ever since I done the FE16 update my speeds are so much faster now, it used to be so so slow.

the stock doesn't have root the rooted version puts root in your phone too. pretty much to solve mem problems rooted to get rid of bloat and maybe a rom to get ext4 support. a couple of ways to solve mem problem without a custom rom but not nearly as good.

Ok, I think I can do this... fingers crossed... When I get done with rooting the phone can you kinda hold my hand on what is next? I read it but it gets kind of confusing with all th updates on everything. I'll try this and be back in a bit. Thanks for all the advice and everything.... :)
 
Thank you so much, I just did this for my neighbor, she hated that low disc space message so much! lol. Now she has to deal with the update message.
