Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

Where can I download Odin? I downloaded FF19 stock, which just contains some .tar files. Also, where can I get the SPHM820.ops file needed for odin?

the files are in the previous versions available. Kouma was in a rush to get the FF19 files out to the public, and forgot to include odin and the ops file.

thanks, does anyone know where I can get FE16 Gingerbread Stock? it seems like it's been removed from mediafire

actually, can I use any old version's odin and ops file? they don't change between releases?

I have it, but need to explain how i can get it to you?

ok but what link or how to get link? don't do this as of you can tell.

upload file to dropbox

ON PC-

open dropbox folder

locate the file you uploaded (to the public folder, preferably)

right click the file

then move over the dropbox tab

select "copy public link"

then paste the link

:)

thanks and i got it done before you posted this but tell me if it worked?

yep. worked just fine :) (at least the dl started anyways, only got 3g at the moment, and dont want to dl the whole file until i get around wifi)

should work ok i clicked it and worked, just hoped everyone else could too. also learned something new here too.

an alternative would be to make a mediafire account (its free) and upload it there. i didnt suggest that since they removed the file from there already once :D but its basically the same concept, just have to access the link form the website instead of having the convenient folder on your desktop

I have a mediafire too and was uploading it there at the same time and thought if they got rid of it before they might again so the did the dropbox instead.

Ok, I have been using SPHM820_FE16_ROOT_CWM, ClockWorkMod v5.0.2.7, CTmod 3.68, KoumaKernel 2.5 with the Carbon Lite theme for a few months now and all seems to be great except I have noticed a couple bugs!

1) When the keyboard is on screen during a text or other typing situation and the phone is tilted, the screen goes blank until I back out of the keyboard and re-launch it.

2) The time changes to the incorrect time zone in the middle of the night, I have to select manual time setting and change it back to Pacific Time... at 8am, it said 3pm!!! This has happened several times and I can no longer rely on the alarm to wake me up on time.

3) Every time I reboot, it force closes the Android system. It doesn't seem to affect anything but its very annoying!

Hi,

I am using the same setup as you do. But I have not encountered any of the problems you are descriing.

To 1 : What kind of keyboard are you using ? The default one that comes with CTMod ?I first used the default one, then the BIG Button keyboard and finally I settled for the Swift 3 keyboard which I think is the best ( currently on sale for $0.99 )....... but never encountered the Black screen problem.

To 2 : Under Settings>>Date&Time, did you checkmark "Automatic (use network provided values)" ?? I use this setting and went through several time zones and it always had the correct time.

To 3 : Never had the Android system force close.

My suggestion would be to do a system wipe, clear the dalvik cache and then re-flash CTMod3.68 and re-install all your apps fresh from the market.

Hope this helps,

vce

Two things that CTmod doesn't do right, I might just write and put an APK up to take care of both of these, and it is welcome to be included in the next CTmod version. The problems are:

1: Settings does not remember the timezone that I set manually. It also does not seem to be able to set it automatically either. it constantly reverts to GMT.

2: Does not remember that WiFi is on between reboots, and it should, reguardless of the airplane mode setting. My Prevail is deactivated (no service) but I use it for VoIP.

Solution:
I'll write an APK that addresses both of these problems in the next day or so, that will have the ability to force set the timezone and will have the ability to turn on, off, or leave alone WiFi at boot time.

Ok so I am about to root my sisters Prevail. But I have one question before I do it. This Odin program, it's all I need to root the phone correct?

And I see the first download links in that thread are:
DOWNLOAD FF19 Gingerbread Rooted by Koumajutsu
&
DOWNLOAD FF19 Gingerbread Stock Image by Koumajutsu

but if you go down a bit right under DOWNLOAD FE16 Gingerbread Stock Image by Koumajutsu there is this:
DOWNLOAD FA19 Gingerbread Rooted Image with CWM5 by Koumajutsu

So I am a bit confused. Which do I use?

The ff19 image has issues with some apps gaining root access. (kernel issues)
Fe16 is the way to go if you intend to just use stock rooted.

But if you follow the guide and install ctmod, ff19 is fine.

Ff19 is the newest image available.

So I should just install Fe16? I mean I just want it to be stock rom. I mean my sister doesn't even care. All she does is listen to music and go on Youtube on this thing. And I want to root this to give her more space. (Removing Bloatware, able to force install Maps, Facebook, Youtube ect to SD)

that depends on your needs. If you intend to use stock rooted with (for example, links2sd) extra storage... Then i would go with fe16.

If you want the most out of your phone, with a stock feel, and no bloat, go with the newest image + ctmod.

If you follow the guide thoroughly, you will have stock + speed + as much internal memory as you could want, without needing an additional app to accomplish it.

This truly is the little Android that could... Lol
