Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

when i start the partition process, it says on notifications bar "sd card safe to remove". is that supposed to happen?>

If someone will jump in a pm with me, that would prob be easier than me clogging the thread. Thanks in advanced, Dj

Thanks LV for the pm, it helped me out for sure.

I re-installed ROM.
Opened format tool.
Created one fat, one ext, and one swap. KK must be set to Normal, not data or ssm.
Formatted.
rebooted.
Opened Kouma settings, Swap
long pressed the top box, went to "dev/block/mmcblk03"
set as swap location. Playing with priority/swappiness settings still.

Then set KK to data, rebooted, all GOOD!

Again, Thanks!

I Just rooted my Galaxy Prevail tonight and everything went good. I got through the root, then set up the partition and flashed CTmod onto my phone. I got to the part where you switch it to Data and reboot. You state it may take up to 10 to 15 min to start the first time. Well i'm past 20min and wondering if something it wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Reboot into recovery (cwm) and select mounts> format sdext and then reboot... give it another 10-15 min and see if it boots

Hey thanks for your response but I am still having the same problem....I am passing the 20min mark again. I did what you suggested and rebooted. It is just stuck on the screen with the symbol and says KOUMA KERNEL 2.5. Every once in a while the lights on the soft keys come on and go off after a second.

Hmmm... which way did you partition it? Using cwm? Could you try repartitioning the whole card? You selected data mode correct?

If repartitioning doesn't work, you could try to reflash the rom...

What class is your sdcard?

Yes I selected Data Mode....I will trying reflashing the ROM when I get home from work today. Also my SD Card is a Kingston SDHC with a 4 on it. Will this work alright or do I need to use a better SD card?

It should still work, but your phone may just not like the slower card. (Or it may not like the brand... some cards just refuse to work with the /data2sdext mods)

If reflashing the rom doesn't work, try partitioning the card again... if that doesn't work, you may need to use a different card

Hey I followed your suggestions to the letter. I repartioned the sd card and reflashed the CTmod ROM and I have the same results. It just freezes at the screen and I let it go for a good 25 min. So would you assume it's just the SD card that is not working for me. If so could you recommend one to get that you know works? Also, will I run into any issues if I just run the CTmod Rom and just skip the SDext Bit and the setting config?

Ctmod will run fine without the sdext settings. You will just probably run out of space fairly quickly.

And as far as a recommended sdcard... I would go with a name brand one... this thread has some good suggestions:

Hey I just wanted to say a quick THANKS for all the help and the AWESOME instructions. I just got the new SD card today. SanDisk 16gb 1U UHS Class. Followed ALL the instuctions again and BAM. First time. and the thing booted up in like 5 min this time. Again Thanks for the Help and Great Job

I am about to update my rom from ver3.68 to 3.75.2. Will I have to re-partition my sd-card again? Will I still need to use AutoStarts to keep my carrier from updateing my rom? Any other tips for updating my rom? My first root went well by following your directions but I am uneasy about updating. Thanks to all of you for your help!

NO

Will I still need to use AutoStarts to keep my carrier from updateing my rom?

NOPE... its based on the newest release

Any other tips for updating my rom? My first root went well by following your directions but I am uneasy about updating. Thanks to all of you for your help!

Nope... you should be fine. Just don't try to restore your apps with titanium backup

Woops! I had planned on restoring my apps with, you guessed it, titanium backup. What should I use to backup and restore my apps?

You shouldn't. You are switching to a completely new rom base. The data associated with the apps will likely cause a bunch of force closes.

Just redownload your apps from the market. Or you might be able to get away with restoring just the app part, without the data... but that may still cause problems... so if you get lag/force closes/any strange things happening... then that is the reason

Well I thought I was free and clear with my new upgraded SD card. Everything seemed to go very well with the new card....That 10 to 15 min wait after switching to Data mode was over in about 3 or 4. So I start downloading and Installing my apps...Go Launcher, Facebook, Gmail, and some other essentials and everything was good that whole night. Got to work the next day and the phone starting acting up. It kept freezing on me and giving me Force Closes on a bunch of random stuff. So I got home and Wiped Everything and started over. Again everything was good the whole night. Today at work it started getting crazy again with the force closes and freezes. And then it was giving me SD card Errors. It would freeze during the Media Scan and I would have to reboot. After about 2 or 3 times rebooting it would stay good for a little while and everything would work. I would sit it down for like 2 hours and go back to it and it would be frozen and I would have to reboot again. It almost seems like the SD-EXT isn't holding or something. I might just be talking nonsense with that line though I don't know. But i'm CLUELESS. Any other Suggestion?

I would a factory reset and re-flash CTMod and change to DATA........ At this point, I would leave it alone and NOT install ANY additional apps for like 3-5 days and see how the phone works. Then, I'd install one of the usual apps and try it again for a few days.....and then another one.... Maybe one of the apps you're installing does something goofy to the phone...... ( I have heard, that some people had trouble with the Facebook app, for example ).......or two apps don't like each other.....

Give it a try !!!

When you say you flashed back to stock, do you mean using Odin?
What image did you use?
Are you sure the process completed?
Are you rooted?
You can't access cwm?
