Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

I would love some help... and my question regards only ONE thing...

I rooted my phone with the great instructions in this thread, and applied the FF19 rooted version of the 3.75.2 CTmod using Odin. This did include Koumakernel 2.5 within the install.

Everything went smoothly, but I still have only one issue and that is increasing the internal memory of the Prevail to store all APPS to the SDCard. I did partition it with a 1024MB partition, but the internal memory of the phone still only shows 200 MB when you go into app management and check installed applications. Where does the setting for using the SDCard as extended internal memory reside?

The only thing I also found is that any apps by Google, (Google Calendar), Comodo AntiVirus and a few others will now say the phone is unsupported.. any reasons to this?

You need to go : Settings>>>CTMod settings>>>Kernal settings and change to DATA !! Then reboot and see..... ;)

Mine doesn't say unsupported at the PlayStore.... No clue, maybe someone else can help....

I can't download Google Chrome or Earth, get the same device unsupported. Google Earth I believe you have to have dual core processer, not sure what the deal is with Chrome?

Google Earth does not work on the Prevail at all.... Chrome should work..... But "Boat Browser" is much better than Chrome anyway..... You can get the full free or paid version for it.... eal nice and fast !

Actually, chrome doesn't work either... the closest we have is a modded version of maxthon browser designed to look like chrome

Yeah its not a big deal about not having Chrome, although I wild like Google Earth. I have heard people talking about Dolphin browser, thinking about checking it out. Using the version of Boat that's on ctmod now, its OK.

Personally I like boat browser, but dolphin is OK too. If you're looking for a bare bones browser then you may want to check out Naked browser

As for Google earth, I think you're screwed :o

Yeah I saw that Naked browser today, thought it was a app for finding strip clubs or nudist beaches or something to that affect.

Hahaha Hahaha.... its a browser that has been striped down of all the frills and has virtually no permissions. Its very fast and light on ram

I think the Boat browser is fast, easy to navigate (no hidden tabs, and seems to work on all websites that I have thrown at it so far.. I even updated my tablet with it!

Thanks, I did that, it formatted my card, and took awhile for apps to start installing to it, but once it started, I have 1GB partition, and over 400 MB of apps that would have never been possible before the switch!

The only odd thing I notice now, is that Google Play does not show in the installed applications list like my non-rooted tablet, and since I have two devices using the same account on Google, I used to have a box on all devices that would state if the app selected/viewing is compatible with ALL my devices. It seems to not have recognized that I have more than one device attached to the account anymore. Anyone else notice that? Can I somehow re-install the Google Play on the Prevail to get it to recognize? It used to be nice to surf the Play Store on the tablet and designate apps to download to my phone instead of browsing each separate now.

Log out of your Google account, then login again and the PlayStore should be in your AppDrawer...... ( might need to reboot after the logout and login.... )

This might not be the best place to post this, sorry if it isnt'. I'm rooted, I'm on CTMod3.75.2 and Kernal version 2.6.35.14. I have been for awhile. So I bought another SD card 16GB (10MB/s) to replace the old 2GB. So what is the best way for me to install it and partition it? Do I uninstall my apps (maybe 30). do factory wipe before I put in the new SD card? How much should I partition etc??? Can any be dedicated to RAM? Thanks

Its very easy.

1 make a backup
2 copy contents of sdcard to computer
3 partition new card (with cwm)
4 Copy sdcard contents from PC to new card
5 restore your backup (so it 'restores' your sdext to the new card)
6 reboot
:)

You may want to use the sd patter in ct mod settings and make ext 2gig and an ext 500mb and a swap 500mb and the rest fat. A total of 4 partitions so will be there if ever want to use the ssm mode and not have to re partition again.

Thank you for your response. I am definitely the type of person that rooting for DUMMIES was created for. I kind of understand what you're saying, just not sure how to do it. Do I need to do anything before I put the new SD card into my phone? Format etc? I really don't have much saved on the old SD card (that's still in the phone) besides apps and some music. I have no problem reinstalling them. Should I just uninstall everything before putting in the new SD card? So I honestly don't know how to switch out the old to the new. Put in the new sd card and then reformat it, then partition it like you said? I'm going to do an ext4 partition of 2gig, and ext 4(?) of 500mb and a swap of 500mb and the rest FAT? I can just do that all in the SD part in CTmod settings?

First make a backup in CWM, then when you're done back up the entire sd card to your computer. Power your phone down take out SD card put new SD card in hold the volume up and power button to get into CWM partition card any sizes will work just to get it going then power phone up go into CT mod settings then the partition part take the top bar fat and slide it to the left then make all of your partitions the EXT 4 2 of them and the 1 swap the sizes do not have to be exact because it's really hard to get them there. Then slide the top bar back back to the right and then click Start process. When it is done take and copy the stuff from your computer back on to the card. That should do it, then you can go back into CWM, go to restore backup then advanced restore and restore that s the EXT from your last backup and that will put all your apps back and your phone should be the way it was before you started all this. Hope this helps.

Ok, so I thought I followed the direction correctly, but when I go into the CTmod settings/partition I see the ext4 partition and the swap partition and FAT. I dont see another ext4 partition. What did I do wrong? And how do I correct it? Thanks again for all your help!!!

1- slide top bar to left about halfway
2- ext4 is under, move to desired location to get what you want
3- click on the swap and change it too ext4 and move to desired amount
4- click on next one and change it to swap and create desired amount
5- slide top back to right

You scroll down on screen after creating each one and change the name of it by clicking on the name.

Ok, sorry about this. You didn't know what you got yourself into by helping me. LOL. I did what you said above. This is what I got ext 4 2253mb, ext 4 559mb, swap 512mb. But when I click start partition I get this message PARTITIONS IN USE! "you must disable all A2SD utilities and unmount all SD-Card partitions before continuing".

That's because you're in data mode. The sdext is being used. You have to switch to default mode and then reboot first :)

Thank you so very much! So I'm assuming after the partition I put it back into data mode. Reboot (after I've dowloaded the backup from my computer to the new SD card) and do the backup from CWM. If I want to go to SSM in the near future, what would I need to do? Just click on SSM and reboot? What does that get me?

Thanks again!!!!

Another quick question. I am copying the files from my old SD card (that are on my computer) to the new SD card. There are two files already on the new SD card that were on the old one. .android_secure and LOST.DIR. Do I copy the old ones from my computer and replace the two files on the new SD card????

Just leave the new ones, and it doesn't really matter on those 2 folders. The ssm you would have to pick ssm, then reboot to cwm and go advanced and reformat sd-ext and clear the dalvik and reboot. You will then have to reload apps and redo settings and all except for repartitioning card. It will make the apps and all functions of the phone work and operate faster, At least it does for me! I just made the data mode and made a backup and then the ssm and a backup with all apps settings ext... the same so can switch back and forth if want too!
