Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

Last questions.....for now!

As I was poking around the forum, I saw a posting that mentioned an ap that would easily allow me to kiss (oops I mean kill. Such a funny type-o, I had to leave it) the auto-updates for the ROM. Now I can't find it. Do you recall what that would be? I found this. Right at the beginning in Chapter Five: Updates, Freaking Updates!...Autostarts is the name.

Also, is GOO Manager part of the modded system? It asked for Superuser status so I assumed so and allowed it. Now...well, I'm not so sure. :-)

Thanks.

Monica

Hello, Superstar.

Looking at this response to "Biker Guy" regarding ROM updates, it seems that I probably have an update for CTMod. Is that the notification that I was getting on my phone or do I have to track it down manually as I did for the original install? reading your instructions, I am left a little confused because the notification gave me the option to install, which seems quite different from copying a zip file to my SD drive etc. So....maybe you could help my little non-tech brain comprehend this contradiction.

Thanks.
Monica

-Monica :

Go to settings>>Show all>> About Phone... and see what the CTMod version is. The latest and greatest is 3.80..... If you have 3.75 or 3.75.2, then you can update to 3.80.... You can just download CTMod on the phone ( if you have WiFi, or it takes forever ) or go to the CTMod thread and download it from there and copy it to your sd-card and do an install from CWM Recovery ( "Install ZIP from sd-card" ). ;)

As always, make a CWM backup first ! :)

Yeah well...making back-ups has never been my strong suit. I will do it this once. Just for you! ;-)

(Truthfully, I already tried to start the download on my phone this morning and there was a sever problem. Maybe the universe is looking out for me and trying to correct ALL my bad choices.)

Wait. Are you the member that posted the funny Nun and S&M pictures to me?

Oh. On a different topic. How to you get the picture below your username?

Thanks for all your help.
Monica

Okay. I downloaded the Zip file to my computer AND became a lifetime member of GooIm. you may bow down to me if you would like. :-)

I did a backup, installed the zip to my phone, rebooted et. al.

Do I need to do a restore or was the back-up just in case the install failed? (I am sure that is is a moronic question, but I am okay with that. Thanks to Stuart Smalley, I like myself.)

LOL

1. It's easier to just download CTMod3.80 on your computer and coy it to your sd-card, than install it....It's very big and it can take a long, long time to download it on your phone.... and it can cancel as well....

2. Noooooooooo, I didn't send you any S&M pics, but you could share them ! LOL LOL

3. To add a pic under your name, go to "User CP" underneath the top menu and "Edit Avatar" !

4. Good girl.... Backup is always good in case something goes wrong and you want to go back quick..... You should re-download and install all your apps from the PlayStore, otherwise you might get "force close" errors since it is a new ROM.... You can do restores with the same version of ROM !

5. Good luck.......... ( and I still wait for the pics !!! hahahahahaha )

The pictures were embedded in a response from Lord Vicent (Since it wasn't you). I think it was the post where referred to you as Lord Vincent and King VCE. I said I would be your humble servant. They were too funny!! He was inquiring as to what type of servant I would be. lol My message was titled Yet Another Question. The pictures are still there, but I don't know how to send you a link to that. Tell me if you find it.

OK so I just got my phone and added money for the forts time but I can't hardly get any signal!! PLEASE someone help me!!

Perhaps a little more info? Did you ever have good signal with boost mobile in your area? Did you contact customer service to see if there is a tower down? Have you tries updating your prl?

Also, adding more money won't increase your signal strength... its all about the towers in your area. If you aren't close enough to one, there isn't really anything you can do.

With this threads help I rooted my phone a couple weeks ago, I waited to do anything else to make sure rooting was the way I wanted to go which of course it is, so now I want to make back ups and try to partition my SD card.

But the dummy in me cant seem to wrap my head around where to begin, do I need to back up my SD card before I go into CWM to backup the phone?

NOTE: CWM DOES NOT SUPPORT RESTORING BACKUPS MADE RUNNING THE STOCK ROM. THE STOCK FILE SYSTEM USES SAMSUNG'S PROPRIETARY RFS (ROBUST FILE SYSTEM). IF YOU TRY TO RESTORE A BACKUP MADE FROM THE STOCK ROM IT WILL FAIL. THIS IS BECAUSE CWM CANNOT FORMAT THE /SYSTEM PARTITION TO RFS.

Does this mean I need to have a different ROM first. Other than the rooting process itself and using Titanium Backup to remove a couple bloatware apps I havent done anything else as far as kernals or ROMs cause I just dont understand that part yet so I am assuming that I have the stock ROM still???
Thanks.

Welcome to the forums!:)
How did you root, with Odin? Did you pick one that had CWM in it?
If so CWM backups are better than the titanium ones. You should make a CWM backup and then save the whole sd card to pc or laptop. Always after that make them every time before you try something new (or after a few things) so if a problem happens you can restore the last one to get back to before you messed up.

Thanks for the great write up,

however im having a problem, ive followed it step for step and i dont think i downloaded the tar files from the original post. I downloaded them from post #808. However odin is not recognizing them for me to select them.

Anyone know what ive done wrong?

Thanks in advanced

Somebody pleaze help me i am trying to root my prevail i have odin multi etc 4.43 tool i clicked on the this ling for it theres the ops file in there but where it says unzip rooted image in the file i dont see it nor where its at i unzipped the odin thing its only that and the ops

Where it it says click phone choose phone ops click pda chose rooted pda in the image when i click it it has d pda etc but doesnt actually have the word rooted in it now is it rooted cuz its from the rooted folder but just doesnt say it or does it actually have to say rooted pda ettc

it doesn't have to say rooted. It could be called 'clown in a box' if kouma had decided to name it that. The contents of the tars are all that matters

I downloaded your link but when i open the they dont actuall have to word rooted before pda pr phone tar as oppose to the image that says what it suppose to look like rooted_pda.tar but it only says pda.tar

Oh ok thanks i will try just making sure ive never rooted and that picture says what odin suppose to look like etc from a post

i downloaded the samsung drivers from the root post and it doesnt install when i plug my phone in it looks for drivers and no results what i had before woulod find it what do i do?
