Root GUIDE: From stock 1.5 to the latest root 2.1

i have a question if anyone can help me out. i went to the unlockr to get the 2.1 + root. my question is...is it the same rom? is it better than that update? i do want to try the nexus one live wallpapers i have noticed a few bugs in the "original" root with 2.1...if it is the original. such as when im trying to start directions in google maps if i try to type in an address when it says start point and end point i get a force close. the only way i can do it is to click search type in my address click the bubble then click directions or navigate. and idk what the reason but the multitouch feature is very mininal. its only meant for an advanced pinch zoom plus touching 2 parts of the screen at the same time. doesnt cooperate when trying a multitouch visual tester. some help please??

I gotta say that after I struggled with Android SDK for a bit trying to get my system to see my device, everything went smooth as babies ass...This is a very useful guide. I am not a veteran or pro by any means, but I do have just enough DOS knowledge to get me through and with that I was able to follow your directions for the whole process with an end result of a ROOTED device with updated ROM.
:D THANK YOU!!! To all that participated in putting together this project... :D

Have you put the recovery.img and other file in your /tools/ directory inside your SDK program folder?

so it goes something like android-sdk-osx/tools

....

open up your android-sdk-mac or android-sdk-osx folder (or whatever it's called). See your tools folder? You need to drag recovery.img and the flash_image or whatever it's called INTO that tools folder.

Now open up Terminal.

type cd (do not push enter, just cd, and space bar)
now literally DRAG the tools folder into the Terminal window. Then press enter.

In other words, you're telling the computer cd (change directory to) Tools folder.

Now, look at your phone. Make sure that you're on Charge Only, not Disk Drive. Pull down your Notifications bar and make sure it says Charge Only. if it says Disk Drive, touch it, and change it to Charge Only.

Then every command in the tutorial on page 1... INSTEAD of 'adb.......' you're going to type './adb..........'.

In other words, put a ./ in front of every 'adb' command that is there.

You should be golden after that.

Yes I have been using the drag to the terminal and the files are in the /tools folder..

should it look like tools/adb/adb push? I have been using tools/adb push ...

... OK had to push the whole file (/tools/adb push ..../tools/recovery.img /sdcard) and it worked...

rest of recovery process completed!!

In cmd, when I ran the last step: "adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img"

I got a whole tonna "out of memory" error lines...

surprisingly, i had no problems whatsoever following your guide. many thanks to you and everyone who helped. only one problem i've encountered so far is the end key to put the phone to sleep. i've specified the behavior of the end key when pressed (home, then sleep) but it just doesn't go to sleep. any ideas i'm all ears! thanks in advance

Just wanted to add that I had no problems with the batch script root->rom

I got nervous during each step about how long phone would stay on certain screens (e.g., vz logo) but I had followed the directions and everything just worked. I did have to manually turn off and turn on phone and made sure I pressed right combo of power on and volume

2.1 rooted looks amazing... Much props to GRDLOCK and everyone for this and this forum

:)

Are you guys putting the development kit right into your devices, or your computers? That might be a pretty dumb question here, but I am trying to learn more about the process so I can at least at some point undersand a conversation about rooting. :o;)

Frisco, you need to jump ship and do the damn thing already. Seeing this guide is the reason why I did everything. I didnt do the auto scripts as I dont trust windows to run it correctly, lol You will not regret it. When I was using my friends phone on 1.5 I now know how slow it really was before the root.

Come to the dark side already

I have the same issue...i switched it to just Sleep and that option works. other threads have recommended backing out of whatever program you're in instead of just home screen button, basically for app management (processing).

Other than that i had a good experience with the first script - the initial flash of the new rom made the HTC and VZW screens cycle over an over so i did it again and it worked.

i haven't started the second script yet because i had a question on what those installs will do to Sense...do i lose it? does it just get pushed aside, and i would have to select something else for default? I love my Sense...so if something happens to it with these installs i want to be able to weigh the pros/cons. thanks GrdLock!
