Thanks a million for this. I received my phone today and am now running 2.1. I would not have chosen this phone if this had not been available. UrOcK!!
Im having some issues running the all in one script. Got a brand new phone today from Verizon running 1.5. When I got to step one to install PB00IMG.zip my phone goes through all of the image files really quickly and says "image not found" on all of them. Ive tried everything. Yes PB00IMG is in the root of the SD card, yes its labeled correctly, and Ive tried formatting the card a couple times and still it just wont see the image file there. I only have a 2Gb SD card. Dont know if that matters or not. Any ideas?

I would delete that zip file and download a new one.

ARe you using Android SDK for the all-in-one package?
Did you unzip it into the Tools folder?

There is 2 different ways to do it given in the first post.
Make sure you dont try to mix them
There's the all-in-one package which does everything for you. Make sure you have the right file for the all-in-one and not the PB00IMG file
Or you can follow the steps one by one.
Yes I am using the SDK, and have everything in my tools folder of the SDK. I start up the all in one, select "install_root," select option one to root phone. It says that it has loaded the file onto my sd card and then says its going to reboot. My phone never reboots so I manually do it like the instructions say by pressing power and volume down. It then does what I described above and never gives me the "upgrade" option.

2 things: I'm sure you're doing it but have to ask.. SD card is not mounted..right?
Also, are you sure you're supposed to press volume down? Not seeing it in the directions and I remember having to reboot the phone myself also, but i dont remember volume down

Okay - I have been lurking for a few months waiting for the OTA, this is a great guide so I will root from stock 1.5 to custom ROM; I am tired of waiting out VZ and you guys practically do everything for me with this simple guide. Thanks for all the great info. I never specifically saw my question answered.
If I follow the all-in-one do I need to back up my apps prior to starting? I'm unclear if rooting also will wipe all the apps off. If so, just follow the directions on backing up apps listed in the directions in other threads?

Also... Be sure that when you go into the marketplace to restore your apps, that you restore ALL of your apps the first time. It only remembers the apps you had loaded once. The second time you run the marketplace after wiping out your apps, any non-purchased apps you didn't restore will be GONE from the my-downloads list.

alright. I've successfully rooted my eris, but when I attempt to flash the recovery image i get to the final command (adb shell flash_image recovery\sdcard\recovery.img) and it says flash_image: not found. what do I do now to complete this? I'm tired of being so frustrated. Any help would be great. Thanks

now i may not be 100% right but maybe you didnt do this step correctly....
2. Extract file contents to your \tools\ directory of your Android SDK.
hope that kinda helps....maybe its something simple like you put it in wrong folder....sometimes little things like that happen..

so i heard the official 2.1 update is comming tomorrow..what does this mean for us who have sucessfully rooted and running grdlocks roms? and will there be anything built off the offical 2.1 they are putting out or add ons or anything like that that anyone knows of?

I asked this question before and was told if we're rooted... we wont get the OTA... and we dont need the OTA.
I love where I'm at now (lightning rom), so i'm not even thinking about the OTA

oh dont get me wrong man i love where im at and really not to worried about it at all i was just wondering if we will recieve any "goodies" out of it......you said your running the lightning rom??? where did you get this and what is this rom like compared to grdlocks rom if you have tried one of his.......sounds interesting

There's an app called "picMe". You should find it in the market(for root only). Easiest way I've found to do screenshots.

I also started with Grdlocks rom. But went to Lightning because they just got Overclocking and also Apps2SD.
Phone runs very smooth.
I chose Lightnig because i like sense and didn't want to loose it.

But it doesn't run on sense.
The great thing I've found (only been a rooter for not even 2 weeks) is that doing Nandroid backups, i can try as many roms as I want. And if i dont like them, i do a Nand restore and it's as if nothing ever happened

sweet when you do a nand restore are all your apps and widgets still in place or do you have to redownload them?? how many homescreens are on the lightning rom? still have the pinch zoom and stuff?

All 7 screens. Lightning is sense... just with a different look. Red. Don't care for the red so much lol... but i made the switch mainly for the extras.
Everytime you flash a new rom you start from scratch. But once you do a NAND of it, then you're set. You can go back and forth between Roms you've backed up and everything is the way it was at time of NAND backup.
You can go into your SD card and name them..., You can have a lightning Rom, a Grdlock rom, etc... and switch back and forth without headaches.
So if you're happy with what you have... like I was, you can take a chance without worring about staring over if you dont like the new rom.

I hadn't even thought about this. But apperently you can't go from a rom with a2sd to one without.

Which makes sense because all the apps and running from the Sd card.
So you need to decide if you want a2sd or not, then only try to switch between that type of rom.
Unless someone figures out an easy way to switch between them

ok so i have already rooted a few eris's sucessfully put custom roms/bootanimations all that good stuff and right now im trying to install the recovery onto another eris that is pretty much completely new and when i get to the last command adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img.....i get a mtd: read error at 0x000000000 <out of memory>.........and it does this for about 2 min and finally says error writing recovery: no space left on device......so i mounted agin and went into system/app then ls and deleted a few things to free up space and went back tried doing it agin and got the same error....anyone have any ideas as to what will fix this?
