Root [Guide] How to install CM7 on your Nook Color

Apparently it doesn't let you do that with the stock B&N rom.

Are you trying to replace your B&N rom with CM7? Might be easiest to do it via method #3.

"assume you want to replace the stock rom with CM7". Doesn't that mean all 3 methods should work to replace the stock BN rom?

Well, you don't have an existing custom rom installed, (yours is the stock rom), so #1 is out.

You found out #2 doesn't work for you so that's out.

What's left? :D

Seem to have successfully installed CM7 on my NC. Still working at getting all the apps back up and running (Market did not automatically upload any of my apps and TIBU got stuck). Install guide was quite helpful so thanks for that.

And speaking of guides, I have been trying to find a decent guide to the settings in CM7 but have not had any luck. So far all I have is one-off comments on a couple of the settings as they relate to problems folks have. Is there a general guide to what all the settings are or a list of key settings that should be tweaked for an optimum NC experience?

Update: going to GooglePlay I see that the market thinks this is a different NC even though I logged in with the same account info.

Slowly getting CM7.2 setup and optimized for my usage. Doing lots of reading on this and other boards trying to tease out recommendations on settings. Noticed battery life seems a little short (although my usage right now is above normal). Have added a battery saver app and an app killer app to help improve but had a question about the overclocking. Currently have the minCPU set to 300MHz and maxCPU set to 1200MHz using the "conservative" governor. What is the difference between this and the "on demand" governor? And the "interactiveX" for that matter? From an earlier post I know the "performance" governor keeps the NC running at the maxCPU setting. Thanks in advance for any insight.

App killers aren't recommended for GB and up and killing an app that's just going to start up again is going to hurt battery.

My experience with battery savers: just turn off the screen and wifi when not needed, otherwise they just cause other problems.

Default governor would probably be best (that's why they make it the default), otherwise Google is your friend. :D

When you delete caches, it takes a couple days for them to build and performance/battery to optimize.

The NC is really old hardware. If you need better performance, try a Nexus 7. :D

Been doing some battery tests (will post results when completed) and it does look like running an app killer causes a serious drain on the battery during sleep mode. One big difference between CM7 and a stock Nook is that WiFi operations with CM7 seem to drain the battery twice as fast as on the stock nook. Maybe once I post my results someone will have a brilliant idea as to why that should be the case.

I get better battery life with wifi turned off during sleep. (Wifi settings... menu... advanced)

Some roms require leaving wifi on during sleep to prevent SOD (sleep of death) problems, which require powering completely off and back on... not fun.

Turns out that setting was active the whole time I have been running my tests. And probably why I did not see any impact on battery life running Battery Defender.

And menus within menus - I think it could take a lifetime to find and explore all the settings in CM7/Android. Wish I could find a complete users guide.

Yeah, that is what I have been finding. Wouldn't be so bad if everything just flowed down through the GUI but when you have to access some settings by using the menu button once you are already in settings it gets hard to follow a trail.

Good luck finding a user's guide. Every rom/every device is different, then there's CM7, CM9, CM10, etc.

Ok, spent some time just paging through all the settings in CM7. Most are either reasonably easy to understand what they are or are clearly not applicable to the NC. There are two I am unsure of and looking for some advice. Both are in the performance settings under CyanogenMod Settings. The first is Compcache RAM Usage. What is it and what should it be set at (currently disabled)? The other is Allow Purging of Assets which is currently unchecked. I have had some issues when trying open documents in Office Suite where there is not enough memory and both of these seem like they might help the problem if set correctly. Thanks for any help.

I have at least one program that is trying to write/modify a folder in the mnt and cannot. I also cannot create new folders here. Can't find an obvious way around this. Also, there is a folder called "emmc" which I remember from when I was running a rooted stock nook ROM. Is this somehow a holdover from that ROM (even though I formatted data when doing my CM7 install) or does CM7 use this same folder name?

Update: took a look at permissions with Root Browser. "mnt" has 0775 permission and the instance of "emmc" within it has 0175 permission. Interestingly, there is another instance of "emmc" with the same files/last mod dates in the Home directory with a 0777 permission. All of the files in "emmc" are also duplicated on the SD card . Also interestingly, the SD card shows up in both the Home directory (permission 0777) and in the "mnt" directory (permission 0175).

For what I use it for the Nook Color is fine. Moved to CM7 to open up the app possibilities and to hopefully get some apps to run better than they were on my rooted stock ROM.

I'm not familiar with those settings. I prefer to install roms that are already optimized.

Mirage isn't too bad: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344873

Plan "B" would be this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276

I'm also not a fan of the Nook Color. It's old and slow and waaay under powered. I got rid of mine more than a year ago. The Nexus 7 tablet is nice. :D

I see no reason why an app is trying to modify mnt. There's no reason for the average user either. :D

Most folders are read-only until you change them to read/write. I use root explorer, but there are free root-only explorer apps that might also work, like ES explorer. They convert the 0777 permission to words meaningful to humans. :D

The sdcard should already be read/write, allowing you to make folders. I've had to mess with system/media, data/local and boot folders (after changing to read/write), but mnt is a system folder, for mounted partitions/devices I think.

Re-installed the app and the problem disappeared. Apparently just a glitch. I have Root Browser Lite and that does let me see the permissions (just used the code since that was shorter/easier to type, probably should have explained) and looks like it should let me set the permissions also. Have come to the conclusion that the instances of emmc and SD Card in mnt are just mirrors for the system so the program really isn't modifying anything in mnt but is just "routing" through that directory.

I successfully replaced my stock rom with CM7. I noticed that it was running a rather sluggish, but I remember that the guide does say to expect that for a few days. When running the Netflix app, I noticed the movies streamed less smoothly (actually rather choppy) than when It was on the stock rom... Is this something I can expect to improve as the NC slowly rebuilds its cache? I have stopped as many apps as I can in the app manager down to a total mem usage of about 100MB, but to no avail...

Sounds similar to my impression of them. I supposed Microsoft will buy the rest of them off then (what they don't already own).

hello, I've been trying to root my friend's nook for several hours. everything is fine until I try to "install zip from sdcard". when I click it, it tells me that "no files are found". what am I doing wrong?
