Root [Guide] How to setup Gparted/Alpharev (or any .ISO) with VMware Player (updated Jan 2012)

Read this 2 or 3 times & still don't get it :confused:

You do all this & then what?

Is that it or do you have to do go into Gparted to actually partition the card?
 
Once you get to usage step 3 you're ready to actually partition.

It's a step by step so you're not going to "get it" simply by reading it
 
"Usage:

1) Highlight your Virtual machine "ISObooter" or whatever.

2) Connect the phone in recovery mode and select MOUNT USB MASS STORAGE

3) Virtual Machine > Power > Play Virtual Machine.

3) Check the icons on the bottom of the page. Hovering one of them Should say "High Android Phone" or something equally descriptive. You can see if the device is active or not by whether it is greyed out or not.

You can actually right click on this icon and select change icon. I Personally use the PDA icon"



So once you've done this that's it? Nothing else?

I don't understand how this partitions the card cos you've not told it to do anything as yet as far as I can see :confused:

No, thats not it. At step 3 you are in Gparted. You haven't actually done any partitioning yet. This isn't a partitioning guide. Its a Guide to set up a virtual machine for using .iso images (bootable cd's) without burning to CD and having to reboot computers etc.

You then need to either use Lecter's Gparted video tutorial (in the "all about rooting" sticky thread) or my step by step that forms part of the "Root Memory" faq (also in the "all about rooting" sticky thread).

hmm maybe put something in this guide saying this is not a partitioning guide but a guide to get a working gparted environment within windows.

then link your guide and lecters at the bottom?
 
So do all of the above then this:


3) Connect your device in Recovery mode and mount as USB mass storage
4) Resize the existing FAT32 partition from the back, leaving space after it and create an EXT partition in the space. Steps for the GUI are below.

  • In the drop down menu (top right) select the SD card (be careful not to select your HDD)
  • Right click on the FAT32 Partition and select resize
  • Press the Up arrow on "Free Space Following" until you have the desired sizes
  • Click Resize
  • right click in unallocated space and select New> EXT format of your choice
  • Click Apply

5) now you just need to flash your ROM with a2SD+ support.



Hopefully it makes a bit more sense when you actually do it cos the 1st bit of step 4 means nothing to me :eek:
 
The ROM itself is running OK as it is, I'm just not getting the correct amount of free space reported I don't think.

Will leave it for now until I'm more confident or it goes pear shaped :D
 
So after I've done all that & I've partitioned the SD card do I have to wipe the cache & do a full wipe as if I was flashing a new ROM for the 1st time?
 
If you're changing Rom, yes but if you're using the same and it has or you're flashing an a2sd+ script, it shouldn't be necessary but you may have to
 
I'm on Leedroid 3.0.8.2 & I was gonna go onto his HD ROM which needs a 1GB partition & recommends a full wipe so I do that after I've partitioned the card?

My phone is connected in recovery & I get:

HBBOOT USB PLUG

And the normal fastboot, recovery etc etc
 
That's hboot not recovery. Select "recovery"

Then once in recovery, go to "mounts and storage" and select "mount usb mass storage"

Don't think I've added the phone correctly, keeps coming up with an error message.

Will try again.
