[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

I have tested the link on the 4shared site, and it works on several computers. You should be fine downloading it. Make sure you save the file, do NOT choose open. There is no need to open it.

And yes, there is a newer Recovery img 1.6.2, but I haven't tested it yet and while I'm sure there are no problems, I don't want to change the tutorial until I know all is well and no bugs in it :)
 
followed the tutorial to the T and had literally zero issues, and no error messages what so ever, did have to DL pdanet as im using Win7, kinda bummed i cant use tethering now, but whatever, installed fresh 1.1, gumbo kernel, and setCPU, stoked about the performance, install was a breeze. my only complaint is that the youtube app still doesnt work, says video cannot be played, thought i read somewhere in here before i rooted that rooting fixes it, oh well gues not. thanks for the awesome tutorial, wouldnt have done it without it

congrats on getting rooted and getting Fresh... just to make sure, you did apply the flash fix for Fresh correct? I can use the youtube app with no problems...
 
just found the fix, installing it now

i just moved the fix over to my sd card, ran in recovery, loaded the .zip fix file. said it installed successfully, still cant use the youtube app....
 
i tried renaming it as update.zip also, and running it as an update, youtube still not working...any ideas? both times it said it was successfully installed, im using dolphin browser, but i dont think that would have anything to do with the youtube app
 
no idea..it works great for me running fresh 1.1... gumbo .31...and setcpu.. I'm using the stock browser but doubt that has anything to do with it..

if you really NEED to watch youtube videos.. there's always m.youtube.com
 
Just a quick note for people. If you are following this guide and are doing the auto root, it is using the old pre-kitchen. I haven't updated the guide yet with screen shots/directions for the new release. Keep in mind the concept is the same, and truthfully, it is pretty self explanatory to use it :)
 
Just wondering is there a better guide for explaining Roms/Kernels that goes into decent detail ?

Its been a while since I looking in this thread and well, its blown all up.

Kernels are the core of the OS. no Kernel, no work. Kernels can be separate or included in a ROM

ROMs. a ROM in the sense that we talk about is a collection of both OS and application packages bundled together in a single package that you can flash to your phone.
 
So, I'm trying to manually root. I've gotten everything downloaded and put into the android sdk folder. I try the first command in the cmd screen and I get

"the system cannot find the path specified" every time. What have I done wrong? And thanks in advance, I definitely am a total newb. I have searched, but got frustrated wading through tons of posts.

Your image you tried to post must be hosted somewhere in order link it like you did. Something like photobucket or similar should work. We can't see your screen shot until then :)

As for your problem, did you install the drivers for your phone?
 
Yes, the drivers are installed. I had to do the workaround with the xp drivers. I also have pdanet installed. I tried to autoroot first and that wouldn't work either, and I read that it was pretty buggy, and that manual rooting was super easy so I tried that. Anyway, when I tried to autoroot, I ran the diagnostic and everything checked out ok. I will try to get a screenshot up, like I said before, I'm a total newb, but I'm tenacious, i'll get it!!!
 
Cool. As soon as you get your screen shot up, I imagine we can help you out more. One thing to be sure of, since you are doing it manually. Make sure that when you open a cmd prompt, that you do a cd to the correct directory. Otherwise, none of the commands will work.
 
I was just trying to do the cut and paste method, so I'm not sure if I did the cd to the dir. Dude, I' in way over my head, here, so I'm totally gonna be a pain in the @ss LOL!
I managed to jailbreak my iPod touch3rd gen without help, so I figured I could do this, and wanted to root before they lose the exploit with 2.1. And it sounds like fresh has a great new rom thats really close to what sprint will offer....
 
Yeah, you have to change to your directory. So you open a command prompt and type:

cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools

That will put you into the correct directory. That is of course, if you have the sdk in the same directory as I do here and as stated in Step 1 :). Changing to the directory is in Step 7 which is where the copy and pasting of the code begins.
 
I must have screwed up where I put the sdk, because when i type this
cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools ,the same thing happens. cannot find path blah blah.
 
Yeah, you probably just put it in the wrong place. Check and see. If you unzipped it, and then moved that whole folder (which I'm guessing you did) if you navigate there on Windows, you should see exactly where you have it. You have to get to the tools folder, so just navigate to there, make note of the full pathname, and go at it :)
 
i get mount: operation not permitted after entering in this:

mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
 
crap
i got passed that but now i get : ' flash_image ' is not recognised as and internal or external command, operable program or batch file...

:-( please help

and thats after i enter in :
flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img
