[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

i'm not sure but I just installed the fresh kitchen to my computer then hit a couple buttons on kitchen, now I have fresh toast rom on my phone just know and as I'm in the set up page I'm still getting the data error code 67. Thanks for everyone help with kitchen but I'm still have the same problem that I started with this morning. Is there anything left to do to fix this error do should I re install my backup to 1.5?

Quick question, Trying to flash DC 2.08.1 for first time. Wiped data and davlik, installing DC, but apparently I missed an error messge that says something about a davlik wipe error, "wipe from adp" or something like that... The phone is now sitting on the HTC screen while rebooting after DC install

Do I need to re-do this? Thanks!

short answer... yes it needs to be wiped...

longer answer.. there are a few people that have flashed ROMs without wiping davlik that had no issues.. there are many more that have had problems that fixed it by wiping the davlik.

since you had an error when wiping the davlik I would guess that you have RA 1.5.2 installed. upgrading to 1.6.2 will correct the error.

So, you are saying that I should go back and wipe the davlik, and reflash the ROM again? dang, all that set-up again! And, yes, I have RA 1.5.2...
All this is very foreign to me, so just to be sure, RA 1.6.2 would get put in the android....\tool folder on the C drive, right? And then wipe and reflash the ROM. Sorry, it's been a rough week outside of the Hero community for me. :(

Hey JB. Here is an easy way to upgrade your RA to 1.6.2.

Option A:
1. Use Kitchen (I didn't but I think it says it can do it)

or

Option B:
1. Mount your SD card, put the 1.6.2 img on your SD card. Unmount your SD Card.
2. Make sure SD Card is unmounted and USB Debugging Is enabled
3. Open a command prompt, and cd to your android-sdk-windows/tools directory
4. Issue the following commands (press enter after each)

adb remount
adb shell
cd /sdcard/
flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img

After those commands, make sure it flashes successfully (It will return to the # sign). When I did mine, I kept getting the out of memory error. To fix this I simply unplugged the phone, and repeated my steps. Do not reboot the phone until the img successfully flashes.

After you get it successfully flashed, you will issue the following command

reboot recovery

That should take your into RA :)

JB - I had the issue where the davlik had an error and I flashed anyway. No issues.

I also just flashed over 2.0d with Fresh 2.1.1 and so far <knock on wood> no issues.

I had to remove the ES file explorer, and reinstalled and so far everything is working well.

What version are you currently running? Is it 1.5 or 2.1 ?

good point...I forgot that Sprint released 2.1 and that there's no root option for those that upgraded to it through official means..

I really need to get some sleep... hopefully my boss will let me take the day off since I've been working since 8p last night...it's now after 7am...

i installed the leaked 2.1 but ima go back to the 1.5 and try again

Well, I wish I would have read this thread yesterday before i spent all those hours trying to root my hero. I got the same message at step 6!! ...and yes I upgraded to 2.1 earlier that day and was so disappointed that I decided to try and root.

Please, will someone reassure me that there will be a root option for this upgrade soon.

Ques..

If you are currently running 2.1, how will you go back to 1.5?? Is it because your running the leaked 2.1?

....Regards

yes root will be an option... just as soon as someone does it AND posts how they did it.

anyone that rooted with 1.5 and flashed ROMs to get 2.1 can at anytime go back to 1.5... anyone that ran a RUU to get 2.1 is well... stuck with it

So glad I got sick of waiting for Sprint by about 2 weeks and rooted! Now I can install any developer's Sprint Hero ROM and try what I want. Color me happy.

With help from an advanced member of Androidforums, I just (auto-)rooted my hero for the first time and it went great (using Flipz's method). I had 1.5 and now have 2.1 However, it crashed while I was syncing with Exchange. It went into what my helper thought is some sort of boot loop. So I wiped the device, flashed again, and then this happened again (I was syncing Exchange again). The little green droid keeps dancing on my screen repeatedly. He freezes, the phone turns off, and then turns back on again and he dances, freezes etc. I have now wiped again and re-flashed a second time, and tried to sync again to Exchange. I also flashed the SU patch. And it still crashed into this loop again. So it has happened three times total and appears to be a pattern. If anyone has any idea, please let me know. Exchange is critical for me.

I'm not an expert like some of the others here, but my first guess is that your phone is trying to sync and timing out, but getting stuck in the process. You might try upgrading the radio baseband with the latest one. No promises, but a better connection may help.

Just download the latest radio here and be sure to follow the simple directions to the letter. From my own experience sometimes the easier a task is, the greater probability I will fark it up.

Thanks for the suggestion. However, I have now flashed with 2.1.1 and it doesn't have the sync problem, so it seems to be a bug with 2.1.2. Someone suggested trying to flash 2.1.2 on top of 2.1.1. How do you do that? Would I just flash with the 2.1.2 zip without doing a wipe of 2.1.1 first? Is that safe?
Glad you got it figured out. If Flipz says you can flash a different ROM of his without wiping, then you should be good to go. As always, nothing is foolproof to work on every phone, even though they are the same manufacturer, model, and carrier. Just too many variables. So if you want to flash a ROM from Flipz and he says you don't need to wipe, but you find you are having problems, then you can always do a wipe and reflash the ROM. Example: Flipz said you could go from Fresh 2.0d to 2.1.1 without wiping, but a few people had issues anyway, so they went back and did a wipe, then reflashed.

I have not looked at 2.1.2, but if Flipz said you can flash on top of 2.1.1 without doing a wipe, then you can try that. If you want to flash 2.1.2 on top of 2.1.1 then just go to RA, scroll down to flash a zip, choose the zip file you want to flash, and flash it. That is without doing a wipe. If you have problems you can go back, wipe, and reflash.

yes it's perfectly safe. flash 2.1.2 without wiping. I flashed 2.11 without wiping 2.0d then flashed 2.1.2 without wiping. Flipz says it's OK to flash without wiping. He does however says that there might be the rare case where flashing without wiping doesn't work and then you would ahve to wipe.

typically with most ROMS, when an update comes out a wipe isn't needed.

What a day! Besides other things, Now I'm getting an error from RA 1.6.2 when I try to create a nandroid backup. It says to do it in adb. Anyone have any ideas? I already tried re-flashing 1.6.2 with the same results.

EDIT: Resolved, the SD card was out of space! DOH! Long day.

Ok I have been following the tutorial here's what my screen says at #4

c:\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb shell
#

Not the $ any ideas?

opps probably should give more info. I am running the "pre 2.1 leak" that was "not rooted properly" as I understand. ANd I am trying to flash recovery-RA-herocv1.6.2-green.img
