[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

yeah and i believe its the latest version too. im thinking i have asroot2 downloaded to the wrong folder but i completely dleted android-sdk folder includiong asroot2 and re-extracted android-sdk to C:android-sdk and then i re-extracted asroot2 but it was going to extract it to C:asroot2 blah blah blah and so i renamed it C:android-sdk-windows/tools.

I had to do it a couple times to get it to work... I didn't extract them correctly at first.

i just redid everything and still no luck. when i go to my computer and click on my C drive and double click on android-sdk-windows, i have another file called android-sdk-windows and underneath it i have a tools folder that contains asroot2. is that correct?

there should only be 1 android-sdk-windows folder, then tools, with the asroot2 folder in the tools folder.

To get around this, you can download the gallery apk, and just use the htc sync app installer feature to get the apk on your phone. If you dl the apk, you should get an option to install the app on your phone. Just connect the phone, set the not bar to sync, and click install.

i tried doing that but it kept saying the installation failed. i finally got adb to work i think and when i pushed it, a sh*tload of stuff came up and it looked liked it worked so i did adb reboot so im about to check it out. ill keep you posted.

grrr when i checked in my apps i couldnt find it! do you have a link to the apk so i can redownload it and stuff? the one i have is labeled Gallery3DFroyo

I need my wifi thether back but now have this terrible v1.6 that I cant seem to root. Will this work?

You have version 1.6 of what? If you are running 2.1 already and it is .6 instead of .5, please read the thread regarding how to root 2.1 as it tells you what to do.

keep getting
[1] Killed /data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh

and am unable to continue with rest of commands respponding correctly, sooooany clues as what the heck i did wwrong?

This is quite vague as to what you have done. If you can provide more info, it is helpful.

For example, what version of stock are you running now (1.5, 2.1)?

What steps have you taken and been successful with thus far?

Etc....

Keep in mind, the more detail you provide and help us, the more we can help you.

I did find a post for 2.1 rooting, however it said only for software 2.27.651.5 and of course mine is 2.27.651.6. And when I try to revert back using the update program I get an error. So any other way to revert? So, am at a complete loss. If I can't get to work by sat will prob go exchange it and try again

New to everything here.

I'm still at 1.56.651.2, and would like to get 2.1 and root it.
This is what I think I need to do:

  1. Download a RUU
  2. Use this guide to root 1.56
  3. Create a nandroid backup
  4. Recover back to original 1.56
  5. Update to 2.27.651.5
  6. Follow guide to root the 2.1
Probably have something screwed up here.
If so, please point me in the right direction.

If the sole purpose is to obtain root, there is no need to run the 2.1 RUU. If you are at 1.5, simply follow this guide. You can then flash a 2.1 ROM if that is your goal.

I'm wussing out and going with the one-click method. However, the link in Step 2 comes up 404. Is this temporary, or do I need to just chew it back and manually root (or muddle my way through Fresh Kitchen 1.0.5)?

I'm rooted on 1.5, running a fresh custom rom....I like what people are saying about the latest zenexp rom but it's 2.1

Do I have to RUU to 2.1 then root? Or can I flash a 2.1 rom over my 1.5 rom without updating first?

Nope, you are good to go. I think I have this already covered in the FAQ, but I'll have to double check.

When going from a 1.5 ROM to a 2.1 ROM, all you have to do is make sure that you wipe data and dalvik, then flash the ROM. So basically, you would put the new ROM on your SD card, but into recovery, choose to wipe data and then dalvik (only wipe EXT if having problems, if using apps2sd, or if new ROM tells you too), then flash your new 2.1 ROM.

There is no need to really ever use the 2.1 RUU if you are already rooted :)

excellent, thank you, you did mention the wiping in the FAQ but I guess I didn't understand the way you worded it, that and I have a tendency to need things spelled out for me
