[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

Use google. Just make sure your contacts are sync'd with your gmail account then make a backup of it just in case. You shouldn't loose them anyways rooting your phone, but if you feel more comfortable making a backup feel free.

Sign into google, then go into gmail, and choose contacts. Once in there, click on export and simply export your contacts to back them up ;)

i rooted and now am using the fresh rom. I am not seeing the snapiness of the phone others are seeing. In fact the phone seems slower to me. My wife's is definitely slower now. Any ideas?

Quite possibly the fault of an app you have installed.
 
Yeah, Fresh Rom IS 1.5...it's just modified. If they make a Fresh ROM for 1.6 or 2.x...then you can load it and have both.
 
OK.. So I have rooted my Hero using autoroot as described above. I have one question. I have a phone with Google on it so I checked the box"Phone with Google" It installed 1.2.3 recovery. Do I need to root again and leave the box unchecked so it loads 1.56.... or does it even matter? BTW I have not installed any rom yet.
 
When you checked that box, it should have told you that you can re-root with the box unchecked to push the newer recovery image. It will not hurt to do another auto-root with the new image.

Thanks for the quick reply. I kinda thought that's what I read, but I guess I wanted a little assurance that that was the case. Tonight I will be installing fresh1.1.. woohoo:D
BTW.. thanks for the great guide you put together. I'm sure alot of other people will feel a little better about flashing thier phones.
Also, with out flipz I would have not tried this. Keep up the good work. We all appreciate it.;)
 
Ok, I used the Kitchen..

I did "With Google"

In the CMD prompt I got all of the "(Out of Memory)" errors,

mtd: read error at 0x00380000 (Out of memory)
.\adb\adb-windows kill-server
.\adb\adb-windows kill-server
#

But my phone has the green writing etc. on the screen.

Am I rooted? Should I just reboot?

BTW, Awesome guide.

Actually, within the Auto-Root section is a spot that explains what to do if you get the out of memory error :)

Glad to see you got it working, and thanks for the input :).
 
So is the "With Google" thing even necessary since there supposedly isn't any difference between the phones, and people who have "With Google" can just uncheck the box?
 
I ran into the memory issue as well, followed the guide and it was all good.

I used shootme to test if the phone was rooted.

I did end up having to redo the recovery image as I got just a tad ahead of myself and didn't push the 1.5.2 but loaded the 1.2.3 image.

Oh well no big issue, Rep for the how to !

Ok, I have rooted and installed fresh1.1 but I have a small problem. I was playing around with the new software and noticed Sprint TV was missing. Can I use "kitchen" to re-load Sprint TV. It's not a big deal, I don't use it that often, but it's nice to have at times. Everything else seems ok.
 
ok....I've come to the conclusion that Rooting just isn't for me....or rather, I've had that decision made for me, by the sign that I can't get it to work.

Keep getting the "failed to push files properly" error repeatedly. Searched here, XDA and PPCGeeks with no solid solution. Found a few posts about people with the same problem, but all the fixes that have been suggested, I've tried to no avail.

Steps I've tried:

Rebooting Computer
Rebooting Phone
Exiting HTC Sync when it automatically starts
Safely Removing Hardward to remove SD Card drive from computer (I never mounted it, it automatically registered....I've seen a few other people state that "ejecting" the drive from the computer has worked, but not for me)
USB Debugging IS selected.
I've tried "With Google" both selected and unselected.
I've run diagnostics (oddly enough, most of the times everything checks out, but sometimes "Sendkeys" has and 'x' by it)

I've got nothing.

Anyone have any ideas?

BTW, I'm on XP SP3 (or whatever the latest is). I dl'd and copied the auto-root patch, I have the newest version of HTC Sync (2.0.18 i believe).
 
Great job on the walk through. Finally broke down and rooted my Hero today (after playing with custom roms on the WinMo side of things, I decided it was only logical to enjoy my Hero to it's fullest as well) and just being able to have a full backup alone is worth it to me! Now to see what havoc I can cause to this device!
 
Just to confirm, If I have rooted my Hero and then a new firmware is available, do I need to 'unroot' and update and then re-root? first having backed everything up?

maybe Auto Root isn't for you... before the kitchen people had to do it manually.. give that a try before giving up...
