[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

maybe Auto Root isn't for you... before the kitchen people had to do it manually.. give that a try before giving up...

The issue I have with that is, can I still add on stuff that is missing from the Fresh ROM? Also, doing it manually, will it wipe the device during install or does the rooting method matter? In other words, is the only difference, the actual root of the device?

Just to confirm, If I have rooted my Hero and then a new firmware is available, do I need to 'unroot' and update and then re-root? first having backed everything up?

if you unroot and get the Sprint update, there is a chance that you will lose the ability to root (Sprint/HTC may have fixed the opening used to gain root).. if you wait a few hours after the update ( a day or 2 at most) there will be 2.1 ROMs available that won't close the root door...

I posted on another thread, but I need a quick answer if anyone can help me,

Help. I had rooted my phone and been running Fresh 1.1.

I tried installing villain 1.2. It never got past the HTC screen. I tried removing the battery, got to the skate board screen, but I am still getting hung up on the HTC screen.

Please advise what to do.

Tell me I haven't bricked it.

as they said in the other thread, you flashed a GSM Hero ROM, not a CDMA ROM.

once i removed task panel phone is very snappy now no lag at all. damn task managers are killing performance...

i rooted and now am using the fresh rom. I am not seeing the snapiness of the phone others are seeing. In fact the phone seems slower to me. My wife's is definitely slower now. Any ideas?

If I loaded MoDaCo rom on my SD card and Fresh 1.1....could I switch in between the two?

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to. I did yesterday, put Modaco2.2 on, flashed it over Fresh1.1, then went back to my nandroid backup I made before flashing Modaco. You shouldn't have any problem going back and forth between the two, but I still suggest making a backup before doing anything.

Sweet! Thanks. I just downloaded the zip OTA to my SD Card, rebooted into the recovery image screen, backedup, flashed and rebooted.

This is sweet...cool thing too, is my Fresh 1.1 apps are still there too so my favorite Sprint bloatware apps are still there :D

Edit: +1 to ya!

Build number from Fresh 1.1 to MoDaCo Custom ROM 2.2 Core, SSH

After I have rooted and put on a new nexus one reboot exe. and all that is on my (now) 2G SD card...how do I go about upgrading to a higher sized SD card....like say 8G or 16G?

Just switch it out, and transfer all that is on the old card - to the new one??? Is it as simple as that?

Also, how can I - or is it possible to start storing and running "downloaded apps" to my SD card......to keep my processer running at top speed by not bogging it down with all the apps I would LOVE to download?

Thanks in advance as always!!!! :D:D:D

You should really put the "auto rooting" section first. I just did the complete manual rooting. >_<

ahh... but you were able to root it without the auto root... and that's a good reason to have the manual version first. if the auto root fails most people give up...instead they should continue on manually...

I'm in need of a little assistance. I after multiple tries was able to root my phone with the (with Google) auto root. However I am not having any luck rerooting from the 1.2 to the 1.5. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get this to work? Thanks.

By the way, loving the Fresh 1.1 ROM

When you do the auto root, you are un-checking the "With Google" option correct?

If you were able to push the 1.2 onto your phone using the auto root, then it should be no different doing the same thing using the 1.5 (Not checking with Google option).

Newb question. I've been reading up on rooting my phone and then I'll probably put Fresh on it.

When I add Fresh, will I lose my files, apps, settings, etc that are already on my phone?

Looks like I should add that to the FAQ section as I've seen this question several times.

Fresh will not have some stock apps in it, and will also put some non-stock apps on your phone. Your settings/files etc should be safe. This includes your files on your SD card, unless you reformat it for some reason.

Check here for all of what is in Fresh 1.1:

[ROM] 01/01/10-1.1 | fresh rom | a new year release! - xda-developers

when flashing a ROM, NORMALLY you don't lose any settings, files or Apps unless listed in the change log for the ROM you are about to flash.

Remember...
Rule number 1 for flashing anything to your phone. MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP FIRST!! that's just in case of the unlikely event that something goes wrong you can restore it back to it's previous rooted yet unflashed state.

also remember, that you and you alone are responsible for anything you do to your phone...

Thanks, I'm a pretty computer tech savvy person, but this is the first time I've had such a high tech fancy phone to get my geek on with :D I just want to make sure I know everything before I dive in!

I have "with google" unchecked when I run the auto root and no dice. It keeps saying all the commands it's trying to run are invalid.

This is what I did, and it worked. I did get the "out of memory error" but it still worked.
BTW.. I was using Vista 32-bit. I don't know if that makes a difference. Don't give up! Did you try to do it manually

I'm not getting an "out of memory" error. Getting "invalid command" errors and I've tried to do it multiple times after restarting the computer and the the phone several times.

Yes I have the auto-root fix for Fresh pre-Kitchen.

Edit: Nevermind. I decided to redownload the auto-root fix again and this time it worked. I had redownloaded Fresh pre-Kitchen which is how I got it to finally do the original "with google" root, and I must not have redownloaded the fix again as well.

noob here, I ran the manual root process after unsuccessful tries with the auto process. When I tried to run a Nandroid backup on the phone i got an error message (forgot the message now and rebooted the phone) and when i try from kitchen it says it works but my nandroid folder has no files in it just the following folders: HT994HF01663 and then inside that are: BCDMRS-20100128-2151 and fresh-BCDMRS-20100128-2154.

Should i have any files in these folders? I don't want to continue on until i have a good backup.

also had some "mtd: read error at 0x00000000 (Out of memory)" during the flash...

Those files are your Nandroid backups...you should rename your backups every time you make one so you know what it is and copy them to your PC in case your SD card flakes out.

Edit: My bad, there should definitely be files inside of those directories! Misread at first.

OK SWEET! Just finished Rooting my phone and installing the fresh 1.1 rom now.... I am so stooked! Ok for those people having problem with the one click rooting, I advise don't do it, like other people said don't give up, do the manual version, I have to admit it was so much easier than I thought then trying the one click. I had problems with the one click rooting so I gave the manual version a try and it was so easy. I will always tell people how to root their phone that way!

once rooted, can i use any rom? example i root using one click method, but i use say cyanogen rom? will rooting method limit the version of roms i can flash? thanks
