[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

What and when did you backup? You mean making a nandroid backup? No that would not have unrooted you.

What exactly is denying you access? Can you mount your SD card and browse it on your computer? If so, do that, remove the old, push the new, and unmount. Again, do not go into Settings>SD Card>Unmount.

If you are still having issues, take your SD Card out and put it back in, see if that helps.

I successfully flashed v1.2.3, ran the reboot recovery, created a nandroid backup, rebooted the phone, and copied the nandroid folder to my PC. That's it. The sdcard is not currently mounted to the PC, and debugging is selected. I have a cmd line running from the SDK tools folder, but when I try to push the file, it says access denied.

The good news: I opened a new cmd window and was able to successfully push the file.
The bad news: flashing the file resulted in the same behavior, immediate return of the root prompt, doubtful actual flashing of the recovery rom, and recovery reboot locks up at the initial HTC logo.

Just out of curiosity, how critical is it to have the 1.5.2 recovery img? Is it required for Fresh 1.1 or the latest kernel? I haven't been able to try the 1.2.3 img yet, but if that works for me and then I'm not able to push/flash the 1.5.2 img like uminchu, can I proceed flashing roms and updating the kernel with the 1.2.3 recovery img?

I thought there was a link in this thread somewhere but I can't seem to find it...is there a page somewhere that shows what all the icons on the Fresh 1.1 taskbar mean? A legend if you will.

I made it up to step 18--
18:
Code:

Code:
flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img

I got an error when I tried the flash-image, then my phone reset. But at this point I was already rooted, so my witherless tethering is up and running.

Thanks for the site!

Witherless tether rules.......:D

@Danielwalker: If you just hover your mouse over the icons, it explains what it does.

I'm refering to the icons on my phone screen. like the E in cirlce bar keeps chaning colors from white to blue and I wanna know what that means lol.

I am getting an error reading the recovery program. I downloaded the recovery and copied and pasted into the root directory of the sd card. The auto root fails at the reading of the recovery. Any ideas?

Question: If I can flash and backup the v1.2.3 recovery image, but have issues with v1.5.2, is it ok to flash new roms with v1.2.3 and figure out the v1.5.2 issues later?

Tried to root yesterday doing both and 1 click and manual and neither worked so far. The furthest I got doing manual is step 6.

My question is I do have a CDMA Hero but got it through a different carrier (Cellcom). Does this make a difference or should I just keep trying?

I am rooted and the wireless tether works, my computer connects to my phone, but I get local access only, no internet on the computer. Are there settings on the phone that could be set wrong?

Ok,

@Drew and @unimchu...Regarding installing the ROM on 1.2.3 instead. I do believe it should work ok for you. You are certainly able to try it, just make sure you create a nandroid backup first.

@Dougless,
Have you read through this entire thread yet? There are several people out there that have had the exact same problem. Have you tried any of the steps mentioned? My suggestion is to read everything. My advice is to make sure your SD card is not mounted when you try to flash the RA img and make sure USB debugging is Enabled. If auto root isn't working, try doing it manually.

@j_preu
This is for the Sprint CDMA Hero. I would suggest reading this thread and asking them for advice regarding your non Sprint CDMA Hero:

@rslonake
You should be able to get internet with wireless tethering. To be honest though, I haven't gotten the opportunity to play with it much to give you a fair answer as to what to look for/change.

I intend to add to this guide in time. flipz is going to releasing a new kitchen soon, which I will add/update here. I will also go into apps2sd eventually. For now, read this for a reference:
[Guide] Root Cheat Sheet - xda-developers

I have gone through the pre kitchen but am unable to flash fresh 1.1 i get an error message saying unable to open the file or something like that. I would like to know a quick way to tell if I am actually rooted or not. Thanks

could you make a nandroid backup? if so.. you're rooted.. if you haven't even tried.. DO IT before applying any ROM
