[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

One thing I know, right when I selected the flash ROM option, I unplugged the phone from my computer. I don't know if that caused a problem, but I thought I'd mention it.

can i root my phone without changing the roms like getting fresh 1.1 and just getting gumbo kernal and setcpu and stuff.

and also if i root my phone will all the settings and customization stuff i did be gone? like connecting contacts to fb, etc

Yes, you can simply root your phone and not install any custom ROMs.

As stated in the tutorial, your settings/contacts/etc should stay as they are.

thank you and wow fast reply your good
one more thing though.. i read the first post but going back to stock settings..does that mean ill lose everything like customizations and settings ( #3 im referring to)

Yes. Installing the RUU will make your phone as it was when purchased more or less. Return to factory default, if you will.

HELP!!!!!!! I ran the pre kitchen exe and did the root and now it is stuck on the HTC screen with "fastboot USB" in the upper left corner and now isn't restarting. I took out the battery and restarted the phone and it only comes back to that same screen. What do I have to do next??

Sounds odd to me....if you just rooted the phone my guess is you don't have Fresh 1.1 on there. I would download "fresh 1.1" onto your computer manually put it on your Micro SD Card, put it back in your phone....take the battery out and whe you go to turn it back on...press and hold the power button and HOME key until you get "root access" could take a min so keep holding them....

Don't know aside from that....hope someone else on here has had that problem and knows what to do. Above is just my sugesstion....seeing as how you rooted your phone right...?

Keep us posted!!!!

just want to thank everyone for putting the time into posting their problems and workarounds....helped me tremendously i rooted and flashed 1.1 fresh and the gumbo kernal. and there is nothing else i can say except i can sleep easier now knowing my phone works at the speed in which i always wanted it to really dont even care at this point about 2.1 update from sprint cause this thing just flies with the current set up THANKS everyone and by the way if your on the fence about rooting MAN UP AND DO IT! haha

I am trying to use the auto rooter and am getting the error in the title. I have a folder on my desktop called hero that I dl'ed pre-kitchen 0.2 in. Does it need to be placed somewhere else?

bro honestly throw the pre kitchen out the window i found it harder to mess with than that then to manually root the phone. alls you do is dl the three files combine them and go through the command prompt. its actually alot more fun the forum on how to do this on the xda website is pretty fail proof if you need help get at me i know how it feels

what OS are you running?? When are you getting the error? did you also download the patch to fix the auto rooter for pre-kitchen?? have you thought about doing a manual root? it's not hard if you follow the steps in this guide.. if ya do a manual root and if you install Fresh.. you can still use the pre-kitchen to make changes...

I have vista. When I run the diagnostic, I get it most of the time. It will pass other times. If I push the root button, I get the same error. I have downloaded the patch. I am trying to do the manual install now, but the link on step 3 (from androidspin) is not working. What do you suggest?

I just tried the link... works fine.. however, if it isn't for you.. the recovery images are in the pre-kitchen.. look in fresh pre kitchen 0.2/root and you'll find it

yeah.. that link works for me.. might be a problem on your end with it... as long as you got them from pre-kitchen then it's all good

On step 13, permission was denied. The sd card is unmounted. If I am pushing to the sd card should it be mounted?

I rebooted my phone, the command worked. Do I unmount the sd before I continue?

no.. it shouldn't be mounted.. but there's a way around that too... mount the card.. copy the file to the root of the sd card.. unmount and continue

I am now rooted. Thanks for your help! Should I flash fresh 1.1 and the gumbo kernal? Is it easy to get back apk's that are removed by fresh? Is setcpu worth buying? Thanks again!

make a nadroid backup... then flash fresh...then gumbo...then setcpu and set it for 528/245 or 528/160 and ondemand...

you can use pre-kitchen to add of the apps that get removed and remove some that are still there.. plus you can use pre-kitchen to change eh boot screen and lock screen.. the next version of kitchen should have complete themes too

Once you have rooted, first thing you need to do is create a nandroid backup. After that, feel free to install custom ROMs, Kernals, etc. I am running Fresh 1.1 with GCK. You can still use pre-kitchen to add/remove stock apps.

The nandroid backup was part of the manual root walk through right? I had a nandroid folder on my sd card and I copied it to my pc. I didn't need to do it again did I?

it should have been part of the manual walk through.. it should also become a part of what you do before doing any flashes to the phone
