[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

easiest is to make a backup.. then copy it off the SD card to your computer..and rename the folder to let you now what the backup will take you back if needed.
 
Maybe someone here can tell me if they've had this problem. I was already rooted, running Fresh, Gumbo kernal, Overclock widget, and a couple other things. I just got a new computer with Windows 7, so I used the RUU to bring the phone back to stock on the old computer. On the new one, I finally got the phone rooted. After flashing Fresh, and the kernal, I installed the Overclock widget and it froze. The screen kept saying that the overclock widget was not responding and asked if I wanted to force close. I uninstalled and re-installed with the same problem. So I purchased Setcpu and had the same problems. Anyone know what the problem could be?

Do you have the Debugging button turned "On"? That was my problem with it Set CPU not working. Go to manage app, development and check it out....other than that, I'm not sure. Hope that helps and if not someone here knows what is up. Good luck Bro.
 
i rooted just fine, created a backup and copied that to my laptop. now trying to install fresh 1.1 which i downloaded and copied (STILL ZIPPED!) onto my sd root. but when booting to recovery, i dont get a choice for "Apply sdcard: choose zip". i have:

--reboot system now
--USB-MS toggle
--backup/restore
--flash zip from sdcard
--wipe
--partition sdcard
--other

so i picked the flash zip one, it found that zipped file, i pressed home to confirm and it found it, opened it but almost immediately returned "E:cant open /sdcard/fresh-cdma-hero-1.1zip (bad)" then "installation aborted" and puts the same 7 choices above back on the screen. what did i do wrong??? i downloaded fresh from this site:

Yeah that was on. I ended up running the RUU, which also gave me problems. I had to run it from fastboot to get it to see my phone. It's frustrating because I had everything set up on my phone before and it was working perfectly. The only thing I did different was this time instead of rooting manually, I did the auto root.

Now I'm totally frustrated. I re-rooted my phone doing it the old fashioned way. I noticed that I have to force the phone to be reconized by my computer. Simply plugging it in doesn't do anything. I need to puul down the notification bar, click sync, and then back out. Then the phone is recognized. All of the settings and drivers seem to be in the right place, but I can't for the life of me, figure it out.

I got it rooted again and installed Fresh and the Gumbo kernel. Seems okay, but when I install overclock widget, the superuser request screen just goes black. I then have to hold home to get back to the home screen and then I get a notification that overclock is not responding and force close.

yep.. sounds like a bad zip file to me.. and yes, flash zip from sdcard is the correct option to use.

make sure usb debugging is turned on for SU to prompt you for permissions
 
It was. For some reason the Overclock widget was locking everything up. At one point, Handcent force closed.

This thing must be possessed because after my last post, I took a break, came back to the computer and plugged the phone in. It recognized the phone right away. I then flashed Fresh, Gumbo kernel, flash patch, 2.1 icons, and the Godzson dialer. Everything went fine. Then I redownloaded the Overclock widget and boom, it worked.

I have no idea what was going on, but everything is fine now, except my wife being pissed that I've been messing with my phone all day on Valentine's day...lol
 
^ lol.. yeah.. mine would be pissed too... EXCEPT, she's as big of a techy as me... in fact she referred to getting her new laptop as a technogasm
 
mysticmead, thanks - yep it was a bad zip. reinstalled. now im up and running rooted, fresh 1.1, gumbo kernel, and setcpu. 2 issues so far tho:

#1 - while (i THOUGHT) it was sleeping, it started getting hot. not sure why. i checked best i could but could not really identify that any apps were running. it only stayed hot for about 5 mins and only to about 100 degrees then cooled down. this did not happen before i rooted, etc.

#2 - my awake time is now skyrocketing and battery life seemed to take a nose dive right after i finished all the installs earlier today. again, before rooting etc, i had no issue with awake time (usu around 15-20% all day) and battery life was...well, htc isnt exactly known for it's battery life, but it def didnt nose dive.

any ideas on how i could research/identify what's causing either? could it be some weird minute setting i toggled in spare parts or something??

i should note that i have very few apps installed, no task killers/file explorers (just uninstalled astro).

any help would be appreciated.
 
have ypu rebooted since flashing gumbo and adding setcpu? also how s setcpu set? performance? ondemand? powersave?

Performance will run at the max setting all the time..
OnDemand will run at max setting when needed and idle down to lower setting when not needed
Powersave will run at lower setting at all times.
 
Sorry...I'm not in the area, but hope this helps you! Nandroid backup comes "after" you root the phone. Follow these instructions (Tips, Tricks & Fixes - Courtousy of "thacounty") exactly and then if you have problems......go about 4 pages in, that's where most are solved.

When you boot into recovery there will be an option at the top for a Nandroid backup.

Make sure "once" you do the Nandroid backup....copy the folder from your SD Card to your computer for safe keeping :D

Hope this helps you along the way, it was fairly easy for me.

Step 8: This is the last command; you may now close the cmd prompt. This will cause your phone to boot into recovery mode; it should take no longer than 30 secs. The third option on the list is "- Backup/Restore"; select it. Now, select the first option "- Nand backup". The phone will prompt you to press HOME to confirm which is want you want to do. The backup will begin. You will see the screen say, "Performing backup : .........." When done, the bottom of the screen will say "Backup complete!" and you will be given the menu options again. Go back to the main menu and select reboot system. Rebooting your phone after installing the new recovery image may take several minutes.

Step 9: Once your phone is fully booted, mount the sdcard. You will see a folder called "nandroid"; I highly recommend you copy this to your pc in case you lose your sdcard data or reformat it. Your phone is rooted, 100% backed up, and ready to install a custom rom if you wish!

once again thanks for the quick help! actually i did reboot but decided to again AND take out battery for a good minute or so. things running fine it seems so far in terms of awake time and heat. will keep you posted on batt life.

i have setcpu on 528/160 and "ondemand". is this ok? and should i set the profiles to be the same thing? i noticed ability to set the 4 profiles in there...
 
I've been reading on the forum since I got my hero, just after Christmas. I am good with computers and can usually troubleshoot my own problems but am not an expert. I decided to root after much internal debate. The tutorial/faq had everything I needed. It probably took about an hour due to a couple of small snags, and I was able to find answers to the minor problems I ran into by searching the forums. Thanks for the help.

I've been on Fresh for a couple of hours now. To those who are on the fence about rooting, there is a definite improvement in performance using Fresh. It's not even a question. That doesn't mean the phone is now perfect or that I don't still see a bit of lag in certain situations. However, I've been testing every menu of every app that used to give significant lag. Some that used to take 3-5 seconds to load are virtually instantaneous now. Scrolling through large lists of icons, files, etc. is much smoother.
 
i swear i swear i SWEAR i have searched but i guess i'm just too stupid to search right or too stupid to fig it out on my own!!! :P anyhoo one more issue:

i am rooted, running fresh 1.1, gumbo, setcpu. i can still htc sync, mount, etc. life is good. BUT...just downloaded the pre-kitchen 0.2 and it doesnt seem to let me do anything. i tried the simplest things first: getting rid of the wallpaper on the lockscreen/making lockscreen transparent, trying to reboot, shutdown, etc from the pre kitchen tools menu but i keep getting the following error: "this application has failed to start because AdbWinApi.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem".

so i DID re-install but to no avail. furthermore i have net framework, and i CAN see that file under the "adb" folder. what am i doing wrong? did i have to extract the kitchen to a certain place on my computer? did i have to rename/setup something else??

EDIT: looks like i'm only partially stupid. apparently my laptop has a C:\ and D:\ drive. i was trying to run kitchen from D:\ because that is where all my personal files etc are. but remembering that i had to swtich it when i was rooting, i decided to load the kitchen on to C:\. working now. i say i am only partially stupid because altho i figured out HOW to get it to work, i dont know WHY it has to work like that! i.e. i'm only computer savvy to a point!
 
hey quick question!! i'm at step 15 and my phone has turned back on. i'm unaware of something tho. when my phone turned back on, the usb debugging was still enabled and my card is mounted. before continuing, should i unmount my card and keep the usb debugging enabled? and i noticed that someone said u have to unmount ur card using the notification bar, but i don't have that option so i just use the settings instead. i hope that doesn't hinder anything. thx in advance
