[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

Well, I don't have Fresh back on yet. I'm REALLY hoping this backup will work, because I put a lot of time into customizing Fresh...we'll see in a couple minutes, it's rebooting now, and if it gets off the HTC logo, I'll be happy lol....

sounds good. which step is that where your htc logo is just there? i just rebooted my phone using the adb shell reboot command

This is well after rooting. In the last step of the process, you make a nandroid backup, and then should copy it to your computer. That backup is what you'll want to restore should you make changes that you don't like and can't get rid of. I've gotten in the habit of making a nandroid backup before flashing any themes or updates, and if I like them I make another nandroid containing those improvements. Then I move them to my computer, and rename them so I know what they contain.

What I'm trying to do, is restore a previous nandroid backup containing Fresh 1.1, the Gumbo kernel, and a bunch of changes I had made. Just doesn't look like it's going to work, and I'm thinking it MIGHT have something to do with the kernel. Look like I'm going to be tinkering for a while :)

sorry!!! but i have a newb question..

where do i store any of this info?? is it in the nandroid i created when i rooted the phone??

and step 2 is confusing me.. sigh

What info?

And which steps are you using now, the pre-kitchen ones?

actually, the steps in the guide were kinda vague. maybe not for others, but i'm still all new to this so if i could have a walkthru of wha to do to add fresh 1.1 then that would make me a happy camper :D

and pre-kitchen?? umm..i'm at step one: Create a nandroid!

Thought i did that when i rooted??

heading to work now, but any help is appreciated!!

lol, yup, you created a nandroid already, so you should be fine there.

Do you have Fresh1.1 downloaded to your computer? If so, don't unzip it, just copy it to your SD card of your phone. If not, download it :P

Now, unmount the card, and turn the phone off. Turn it back on while holding the Home button down until the HTC logo comes on. It should go into that black screen with green text.

Now scroll down to the "Apply SD card: Choose zip", and select that. Then select the Fresh 1.1 file you put on your SD card, it should be the only thing to show up.

Run it (press home to confirm), and it'll go through a process. When it finishes, select "reboot now".

It'll likely take a little while the first time it boots, but you should now be running Fresh 1.1 (it'll be very obvious while it's booting if it worked, cuz it'll say "Freshhhh" to you lol)

wow. you're a life saver. I'm at work right now but i think everything u said makes sense and i should have it whenever i get off. driving me kinda crazy since i'm here and the rom is at home :D

one thing i'm not certain of is the fact that the guide said to put the file on the top directory thing-a-ma-jig. umm..the top file on my sd card is .bookmarks. i kno not to put it there. are you saying i can put the rom anywhere within my sd card?

so just to confirm, i can put this anywhere within my card then just proceed with the steps u gave me?

Put it on the main part (the "root") of the card. NOT inside any of the folders.

In other words, from my computer, double click the SD card icon to open it...and put it there

alright got'cha. i'm bout to get off in a lil bit so i'm gonna try it as soon as i get home!!

newb question...

if i were to just leave the phone as is, meaning it's rooted..no roms or any other fancy stuff..wha is the benefit in doing so? i have noticed an increase in my apps opening faster, but is there any benefit for keeping it rooted and just rooted??

hope that isn't too confusing.

I would refer you to FAQ #13.

Rooting your phone itself gives you the ability to do some neat things, such as wireless tether, take screen shots, push lockscreens, etc.

In order to get a true performance boost you need to flash a ROM and/or Kernal.

Now that we have a thank you button, I suggest anyone who used this tutorial with rooting your phone should thank ccapasso. Thanks for having this here.

No problem, it's the least I could do. ;)

I've never really been that computer savvy when it comes to stuff like this, but with your guide I've manually rooted my phone twice. :)

Let me know if there is something in particular you would like tatonka. I'm still learning all of this, but enjoy everything about it :)

And if you like the clear look, we can keep it simple and use transparency as well.

My only question is, is rooting worth it?

Why would it be better than a hero out of the box? I understand the full control thing, but is it really better?

YES it is worth rooting it.

You can remove the Sprint apps should you so choose.

You can flash a custom ROM and kernel, which speeds up your phone considerably (not to mention improves battery life).

Then I shall do this tonight, or tomorrow. What do you recommend? Just the Fresh1.1?

Fresh 1.1 is a great place to start and get your feet wet.

When you feel you've played around with that enough, you can find others around, including the AOSP 1.6+ ROM's, as well as the Gumbo kernel to flash

ok im having the problem of...
13:
Code:
Code:
adb push recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img /sdcard
Pushing is equivalent of copy the file to the root of your sdcard. By the time you finished reading this it should be done. You'll know its done because the ouput will say something like transferred X bytes in X secs.
i keep getting the Permission Denied :( help lol for the recovery image
