[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

Got my Hero a couple of weeks a go and played around stock just to get a feel for it. So last night tried rooting. I first tried to use pre-kitchen to do so. I have Windows 7 ultimate 64bit. HTC drivers (even there updated one) were a no go. As soon as I installed pdanet that issue went away.

Next was pre-kithcen. When I ran it I kept getting out of memory areas in the command window. Even after the alert popped up that said I was rooted the errors just kept rolling. The phone showed no signs of rooting (no reboot) but did have the recovery image on there. So I manually restarted the phone. Oh boy bad idea.

First it set on the htc logo window and up in the left hand corner it said fastreboot usb. It sat like that for 10 minutes and finally I just pulled the battery and rebooted. same thing again. This time tried rebooting and holding the home button as well. I got this error on the phone.

And some skateboarding androids...

Thankfully an xda member had this issue and the advice given was to reboot and press the volume down and power at the same time. This got me rolling back to normal. Still was not rooted though. So I went back and did the manual root which worked perfect. Installed Fresh 1.1 and am having no problems now.

Just wanted to share some of my experiences for future reference in case some one else has these issues. Thanks for the guide.

Ok, on step 8, and phone DID not reboot into recovery mode. What do I do now? I am just back at the home screen.

Mine does the same thing.

Just turn the phone off, then hold the HOME button while you turn it back on.

that will boot it into recovery mode.

flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img

Yeah, watched the video, and when I executed this command, I got 50 lines of memory error, 0000440000 error
over and over

Ah, I had that error. Honestly, I have no idea what caused it.

I ended up deleting the recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img from my card, and restarting the rooting process.

yeah, I just did the pre-kitchen auto-rooter. Worked like a charm. Should have done that to begin with! I am currently creating a nanodroid back up, just completed.

Confused as to what to do next. I am downloading fresh 1.1 right now, but I am just a screen with green options.

Reboot, if you've made your nandroid backup through that screen.

Then:
How to use it:
0. Create a nandroid backup!

1. Copy this rom (do not unzip) to the root of your sdcard using one of the various methods.

I found it easy to simply mount my SD card and then drag the file into the root directory. Also, if you are wondering whta is the "root directory" of your SD card, it is the main, top level directory. For example, on a computer the root folder of the C: directory is C:\

2. Go to the recovery program by either typing "reboot recovery" from an adb shell or by powering off the phone and holding Home while you power it on.

3. Scroll down to "Apply sdcard: choose zip" and select the zipped rom. Press the home button to confirm you want to write it.

4. After it finishes (takes several minutes) click "Reboot system now".

Um, is it bad that I did not reboot after the backup? I hope not, because Initialize Fresh Rom is already flashing [wait] in yellow!

Oh, ok, then you're good.

I must have misread that you had already copied Fresh to your card, and were flashing it.

shouldn't take more than a few minutes to get up and running

Ok, good deal. JW, when you say a few minutes, you mean 2-3, or 5-10. Been flashing for....AHA just came up. Now, where is that gumbo kernal?

Ok, got fresh 1.1 loaded with gumo kernal. Phone is at 100% awake time though. Is that suppose to be happening?

Have you let it go to sleep yet? lol.

Also, try rebooting once. As that's usually helped people who have that problem after flashing the kernel the first time

yep... ya gotta reboot after gumbo... once it's rebooted.. put it to sleep.... then in about 10 minutes, check again and you'll see the awake time dropping.

Ok. I have ra 1.2.3 installed, I want to install ra 1.5.2, but it won't let me. When I went to install for the first time, it said it would install the earlier version. It also said it would install the newer One if I ran it again. That wasn't the case. Anyone know how I can flash the newer one?

That makes sense, just did that and it loaded up 1.5.2 with no problem. DO I need to reinstall the Gumbo Kernal?

yea my phone has been awake for awhile even after sleeping. maybe i should reboot like yall said..

another thing..i have kernal and gumbo..but then again..how do u kno gumbo is installed? i followed the same methods of installing gumbo as i did fresh but my phone is still lacking a battery that everyone is raving about and speed of things aren't that fast.

I also have setcpu running but not really sure wha settings i should use. i want speed and battery performance at their peaks.

any ideas?
