[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

the goal of this is to have everything related to rooting your phone in one spot. Hopefully this will help cut down on all of the multiple posts asking the same things over and over.

First things first...i do not take any credit for anything in this as i did not develop anything. Everything here was done by others; i'm simply re-stating it and/or linking it. I am simply trying to make this is simple and easy for everyone as possible.

I rooted my phone last night and it is/was working great. I say was, because in the last 4 hours I have seen my phone for no apparent reason just reboot. I would hear it buzz to see that it was in a reboot process. Is there a log file somewhere that I can pull up to see why it is rebooting? I am running fresh 1.1 and the gumbo kernel.

BTW, am I the only one that got the pre-kitchen to work? I did get the out of memory errors when I tried it with the 1.2.3 image, it rebooted with the fastusb boot screen, I powered off, powered on and did it with the 1.5.2 and it worked great. Took it to step 19 in the manual version write up.

Thanks for putting all this together. I wanted to root my phone but was very hesitant. I read the instructions 3 times through before I attempted this. After all was said and done it wasn't very hard at all and did not take much time. I only had a problem with pre-kitchen on the check of my sendkeys. But I installed pdanet and that took care of the problem. Thanks for making the instructions easy. And thanks to everyone posting their issues so I knew what to look for.

It has done it a couple of more times, not sure if this info is helpful:

Firmware version: 1.5
Baseband version: 1.04.01.09.21
Kernel version: 2.6.27gk-0.31
Build number: fresh rom 1.1
Software verson: 1.56.651.2
Hardware version: 0002
Up time: 0:37:45
Awake time: 0:37:45
It doesn't look like my phone is going to sleep either.

I'd restore from the backup you made right after rooting... see if it reboots in "near stock" configuration. if so then we know it's not the ROM..if it doesn't.. load Fresh and check again.. if so, then restore to stock..redownload fresh and try again.. if it works fine after Fresh.. then try Gumbo...

basically, take it one step at a time to see where the problem is...oh yeah.. did you install any software after rooting? other than Fresh and Gumbo?

The only thing I did after I rooted, freshed, and gumbo'ed was load the fresh patch.

I was just out with my son at the skate park and could not even make a call, tried to call someone, the phone would act like it was dialing for about 5 seconds then it would disconnect. Tried to call about 5 times with the same results, I rebooted and it was fine again.

I think I am going to try each step for a day to see if any changes.

Now was I supposed to make a backup? <---- Just kidding :)

Help Please? I am on Step 18 for the second time, I looked on my SD card and the recovery img is there, but when I get to Step 18, it tells me "error writing recovery: Permission denied"... The first time I just went ahead with step 19, but then decided I probably should go back thru and try it again. Did I already mess Up? Thanks and Sorry:(

If you checked your SD card to make sure the img was there, did you make sure to unmount it as stated in the tutorial before continuing? I'm guessing not as you are getting permission denied.

what does it mean if i can use the pre kitchen to re-boot phone, but can't do anything else? example, if i use it to install nexus boot screen it says install complete, phone re-boots yet there's no nexus boot screen. i'm almost to the point of totally giving up or throwing my phone against the wall....

Did you follow the guide? Did you run the test to make sure auto-root would work for you? Have you read through the entire guide? Have you tried it manually instead?

did you make a nandroid backup? if so, you're rooted.. can you boot into the recovery menu (black screen with green letters) if so... you're rooted..

also did you install Fresh 1.1? Pre-kitchen will apply a boot screen.. but only to a Fresh ROM...

i've read the guide. i get a white triangle with a ! in the middle. so it's not rooted, but what am i missing or what am i doing wrong???

You are not providing very much information for us to help you with. You said you did the auto root, but yet that obviously didn't work. Did you do as state above and run the test to ensure auto root will work for you?

If you are having problems with auto root, there are several things that it could be. I suggest trying it manually as it truly is just as easy, and you learn more as you go along :)

he's not kidding... it really is as easy as copy/paste to root manually.. takes about 10-15 minutes...20 if you triple check everything before hitting enter..

yeah, i keep reading how easy it is but i haven't found this to be very easy at all. trying manual and it says, 'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command.

No offense, but if you are getting that, then you did not read and follow carefully. I'm not trying to be a d**k, but this isn't something you just jump into feet first. Rooting is something to be taken seriously and researched.

Did you download the SDK, did you put it in the right area, did you execute your commands from the correct folder?

Please please please read it all through a few times, watch the video, etc.

seriously.. rooting isn't difficult.. if you follow the guide step by step.. it takes a few minutes and is well worth the effort.

I used the pre kitchen to root my phone and the only thing I ran into was the out of memory error, but after rebooting phone I was rooted...no prob.......

ok guys, I need a quick instruction.

I want to wipe and re-install a rom.

What steps do I do,

Wipe+data, then load the .zip file and just load it up or what?

I will be adding wiping instructions to the tutorial soon.

Boot into recovery and choose wipe. I already had my new signed ROM zip file on my SD card, so after wiping I just flashed the zip and rebooted.
