[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

I used the auto root function in pre kitchen. It installed a version of the recovery image that seems older than the on you listed in the manual rooting guide. Is this something that needs fixed? If so, then how?

Thanks a million for the guide. I have not installed setcpu or the other common apk that makes my phone faster but i have noticed a difference just in speed with Fresh 1.1.

let me guess... you checked the have google box?? right? if so, that applied the older recovery image. you can go through the auto-root again and this time don't check the box.. that will apply the current recovery image. or you can just not worry about it..

as far as setcpu or overclock widget.. unless you flash the Gumbo kernel, it's not needed

Will i have to reload Fresh? and how much speed can i expect to gain with the new kernel and setcpu?

since it doesn't change the ROM and just the recovery image, it can be applied with Fresh.. as far as Gumbo and setcpu... Gumbo speeds Fresh up nicely.. setcpu allows you to set a max and min CPU range.. in ondemand mode it allows the CPU to slow down when not needed and speed up as needed.. this can save the battery a bit (with minimal use I can get 30-36 hours)..

if you want a REAL fast ROM... check out Pancake..I'm trying all of the many versions of Pancake this week to see if I find one I like better than Fresh.. so far I restore my fresh backup at the end of the day.. pancake is fast.. just haven't found the one for me yet..

I'm also going to play with one of the 2.1 ROMs this week.. just for fun.. that's the beauty of rooting.. you can play with different ROMs and still restore a backup to get back to thew one you like.

ok Im I just stupid or am I reading and comprehending it wrong?(lol)

Copy this rom (do not unzip) to the root of your sdcard using one of the various methods.

I found it easy to simply mount my SD card and then drag the file into the root directory. Also, if you are wondering whta is the "root directory" of your SD card, it is the main, top level directory. For example, on a computer the root folder of the C: directory is C:\

I dont get what the top level directory is/"root directory", you said on another post someone else made that its the folder that hold the most, and I have alot of folders Idk what folder to put it in, I really need to know what the folder name is? What folder did you put it in exactly? I guess im just over thinking it but i just want to be exact, and not mess this up.....

Please help me thanks

that's just it... the root of the SD has no name...

mount the SD card.. when you look in the SD card.. before going into ANY folder... you're in root.. root holds ALL other folders..

for example, I mount my SD card.. I get a prompt for what I want to do.. I select open folder.. it opens to show me everything in my SD card.. at that point.. I'm in the root of the SD card

The Root folder is as follows:

Pretend you mount your SD card and it shows up as a hard drive on your PC. You then double click that Hard Drive and you can see all of the folders on there, correct?

That is the root folder, the one that holds all of your other folders. It is the top level.

If you still don't understand, I'll try and take a screen shot so you can see a picture :)

2. Go to the recovery program by either typing "reboot recovery" from an adb shell or by powering off the phone and holding Home while you power it on.

How do i go to "reboot recovery" ?

Because when I turn the phone off and press the home key while turning it on, I get something that says do you want to delete press <action> yes <send> no , and of course I said no, and then it boots up and goes to the home page, but I dont get to the 3rd step please help....

I wish i had someone here to do it for me lol but i dont so Im sorry for the stupid questions and thanks for the help.

just to be clear... you have rooted the phone correct?

if so and holding home doesn't get you to the menu.. try holding volume down while powering on

According to your post, that step is taken from the Install Fresh 1.1 section. You can NOT install fresh 1.1 until you have successfully rooted your phone.

Have your gone all the way through the manual process? Have your created a nandroid backup as it says?

It kind of looks like you are jumping around in the tutorial instead of going all the way through it. You can NOT simply put a ROM on your SD card and flash it.

Please try and provide us with more information as to what you HAVE done, and if it was successful.

Thanks.

-Yes I have successfully rooted my phone, doing it manually( one-click sounded harder then the name).
-yes i did a nandroid backup and copied it to my computer.
-i didnt jump around I just rooted it first and didnt have time to put a rom on it so i waited until the next day.

-i did the first step which was to put the ROM on the root of my sdcard thats all i have done n when I hold down HOME and turn it on i dont get "apply sdcard: Choose zip" , I think something called flash sdcard zip

-anyways I was doing some reading, and does fresh 1.1 require me to wipe, and do i have to do this n how: "Always, always, always wipe when going from 1.5 to 1.6, 2.0 or 2.1" ???

- what is a kernel? and do i HAVE to install that too....

AAHHHH Im such a newbi Im sorry just tryna wrap my head around all this tech phone stuff( im good with everything else execpt this stupid phone[i love it but this process stinks] )

The choice you get about flash sdcard zip is the correct one. The wording can be different depending on what Recovery Image you used. 1.5.2 says Flash SDCard zip as you said. Once you have the file on your SD card and boot into recovery, choose that option then select your Fresh 1.1 zip file.

You only need to wipe when changing from those ROM's as it says. You do not have a ROM installed now, you are running stock but rooted.

You do not have to wipe for fresh 1.1
You do not have to flash a kernel but that is what speeds up the phone.

+1

you can go from stock to fresh..

a kernel is the heart of Linux...Android is Linux based and uses the Linux Kernel.. you have one already otherwise your phone would just be an expensive paper weight. IF you wanted to add the Gumbo kernel, you would copy it to your SD card just like Fresh.. again boot into the root menu.. chose the zip just like with Fresh..

when you see people referring to flashing a zip.. this is what they mean..

Can you install the Gumbo Kernel / SetCPU WITHOUT installing the Fresh 1.1 ROM?
