[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

Hi, I'm hoping you can help.

I'm trying to use fresh kitchen 1.05 and during setup it says I need Microsoft net framework 3.0sp2, and 3.5sp1 to continue setup.

According to Microsoft netfrmwrk 3.5 has both of those in the installer.

A quick google search has turned up nothing to download for dotnetfx 3.0sp2.

Does anyone know where I can download those 2 versions of Net Framework?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I would suggest starting here and downloading this:

Thanks but 3.5 is already installed.

The kitchen needs those specific versions to install or it exits the installation.

Kinda sucks cuz I wanted to compile a custom ROM without the messages app.

I hate the battery drain issue...lol.

Not sure what you are referring to about the battery drain issue, as I believe that was already patched. In addition, I also believe there was discussion before about not including the default message app in a build, or removing it, and it was stated that this will not work.

As for the .net Framework, not sure what to tell you. I know the kitchen was built off of Windows 7, which I have and I also have the newest 3.5 .net framework and it works fine for me.

Have you tried installing it yet?

Yes I installed it.

I'm on xp with sp2 and it needs those specific frameworks/sp's.

As for leaving out messaging, I wanna play a bit.

I know there are issues with leaving it out.

It's just so easy to switch roms I figured why not experiment.

The battery drain issue was "supposed" to be fixed by an update but apparently it didn't help.

So the workaround is to not use the built in sms app.

So I want to try and leave the .apk but remove the odex and see id that allows everything else to work without allowing the stock sms app to initialize.

Hopefully, someone can help me with this...I've read through this thread trying to find an answer without much luck.
I rooted my phone using the manual method, everything went exactly as shown in the guide. Until it was supposed to reboot into recovery mode...it stays on the HTC screen. If I pull the battery, the phone works fine. If I hold volume down on startup, it goes to the screen with skateboarding androids. Whether I choose recovery from that screen, or by holding home during startup, or by the command prompt, it's the same thing...stalls on the HTC screen.
I've done a lot of reading on this recently, and I'm stumped. I tried deleting the recovery image from the sd card, redownloading, and rooting again...to no avail. Thanks in advance for any help.

Just a report for anyone having trouble getting the recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img to work with manual root. Since I didn't find anything matching my symptoms in the thread, I'm describing some of the symptoms I saw for people who experience the same thing so they can hopefully get to a solution more easily. I just sort of guessed that the solution for me would be to use "recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img" and I wanted to save some of the later first-time rooters some time, effort, and anxiety.

The command "flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v.1.5.2.img" did not take several seconds to return to the "#" prompt. It was much less than a second. After reboot recovery, the screen stuck at the "htc" screen.

I pulled the battery and started over from step 13 several times and the flash_image command was still returning to the "#" prompt very quickly. Upon rebooting, the phone would boot normally.

This was remedied by downloading the "recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img" that can be found searching this thread (edit: actually, it's in the post right before this), and proceeding from step 13 with this image instead of 1.5.2.

Happy rooting

have you verified that the file is on the root of the SD card?

Just wanted to thank everyone for their help...and, also, for making this guide. 1.6.2 worked! Rooted and running Fresh 2.0d...and loving it!!

First post here, but have been reading/lurking for a while.

Finally decided to root & rom my Hero. Went with Fresh2.0d.

My question is how long should the reboot take after manually flashing the Fresh zip from the sdcard? I wish I would've remember the exact time, but I'm going on upwards of 15 minutes. My phone's refreshed to the white HTC logo in the reboot process. I'm starting to think it's frozen, but wanted to ask here first.

Thanks in advance for your help.

***EDIT: I think I found the fix upon further searching***

Hopefully what you found as a fix works out, keep us posted. My guess is it had to do with wiping or a lack there of :)

I followed the steps perfectly - thank you by the way! - and now as I am rebooting after installing the new ROM, my phone gets stuck in a reboot cycle, flashing from Sprint to the HTC screen over and over again.

Any thoughts? I am currently wiping my device and installing the ROM again, but it looks like it will be doing the same thing over again.....

*EDIT*

Looks like the phone has flashed successfully! I have flashed many phones, WinMo and Blackberries, throughout my days and this is by far the best guide I have used! Thank you!

A few things to keep in mind:

You may have to wipe both data/dalvik. If you are coming from another ROM with A2SD installed and working, then you have to wipe EXT as well.

Also keep in mind that the first boot does take a while (sometimes upwards of 5+ minutes)

DamageControl v2.07.2 is the ROM that I am running. Everything seems to be up and going now - just having to reinstall all programs I downloaded previously. It seems to be running very smoothly, much faster (imho) than the stock Sprint ROM 1.5. I just hate setting everything back up - but such is the life of a root(er)

:)

Did I answer your question well enough? I am new to all of this Android lingo. I'm used to Blackberries :)

Glad to hear it worked for you. Some people have used an app called Titanium Backup (I think that is what it is called) to backup some of their settings/apps/etc for when they root/flash other ROM's. I personally just set it up each time. To each their own :)
