[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

Thanks for the help, guys. I tried wiping the system/dalvik/sd and reflashing with a different ROM altogether. It worked great all day, then lost audio again this afternoon. (BTW: I still get the 'wipe dalvik (& sd card) via adb' error when I wipe)

I just flashed the audiofix on it, and its working for now. Now if it will just hold...

Thanks again for all your help, guys! This site is indispensible!

Hey. Quick question for whenever the update comes out (called my Sprint Store and they were not told anything through official channels about it coming out). I have my phone rooted and I assume I have to un-root to get the update to work. I know there is a link in the forums that shows you how to un-root and gives you the file but I've seen posts that say that that won't work with a "with Google" phone. That being one released after the last update (November of 2009 I believe). So my question is how do un-root my "with Google" phone? Did I miss a post that leads to a different ROM than the one listed?

Just wait on un-rooting. There is no need to jump on it as soon as it is released. There is a very good chance that the update will patch the ability to root. In addition, being as there are 99.9% Working 2.1 ROM's already, when the official 2.1 update is released the other .1% should be implemented into the 2.1 ROM's.

If you really really want to un-root (again, I suggest waiting, no need to jump on the bandwagon) just run the RUU. This is linked in this guide.

To answer you concerns about it not working on the "With Google" phones, it all depends. Some people report success with the RUU, others do not. It usually depends on what was on your phone to begin with.

For now, just wait...is my suggestion.

Good point. I may just go with a ROM based on the official release. That way I can still pull off stuff I don't need anyway.

So much thanks for this forum! Special thanks to ccaapasso and 330D, who walked me through steps I misunderstood from the rooting guide via chat and PMs. They kept me from total disaster, no lie.

Now I am loving my rooted Sprint HTC Hero, running Fresh 2.0d! Used the Home Switcher app to go from the Sense UI to Android. With the new ROM and Android, my Hero is now like a brand new phone called....well, not sure, but it is better than ever! Much, much faster, snappier, and battery life seems to be better too.

No problems with the Fresh 2.0d ROM that I can see except for the Apps2sd doesn't work. Everything else seems to be working. No plans to unroot when the official 2.1 update comes out in 10 years or so.

P.S.: Thanks also to Heaterz16 and BEARitone for answering questions too.

apps2sd does work on Fresh.. IF you partition the SD card correctly..just make sure you backup the SD card before partitioning as that will wipe all data on the card. also make sure you understand the downside to putting all your apps on the SD card..

I have partiomed my SD card, but it did not work. Re-installed the apps I had on my Hero before rooting and loading Fresh 2.0d, and it is getting tight on space. There was a thread on apps2sd with a couple of cationary posts, and they made sense. Like making sure the card is not mounted when removing or things like that. My card is an 8GB class 6, so it should be fast enough. Much of the card space is for music and pictures.

how did you partition the card? and remember, IF the card fails, you lose all you apps and if you have the davlik cache moved over it'll possibly brick the phone.

First, I don't even know what the davlik cache is, I just know to wipe it if I want to try another ROM. So I won't move that.

I partitioned the card from the recovery screen. Scrolled down to "Partition SD card" and clicked, then clicked to partition the card. For the values, I chose 512 each, then rebootted the phone. Did I make a mistake somewhere?

you really should go back and convert the ext2 partition to ext3 (it has journaling and can help it recovery from an error) also, how do you know that apps2sd isn't working?

read this (all of it) as it explains how to check if apps2sd is working as well as why you need to convert ext2 to ext3 (i.e what can happen if you don't) and how to properly configure the SD card
http://geekfor.me/faq/apps2sd/

Okay, I've been able to Root my phone, but when I try to flash from sdcard, I am getting the error "E:Can't open /sdcard/*ROM*.zip (bad)"

I've tried this with both the latest version of fresh and damage control.

Any suggestions?

sounds like you have bad copies of the ROM's.. I would download them again.. maybe something went wrong in the download or transfer to the SD card

I tried that, got the same error. At this point, I would doubt that the ROMs themselves are bad unless I've been really unlucky.

Thanks for the link. I had different values set and did not convert ext2 to ext3 (don't even know what that is), so that could be the problem. Plus that link explained an easy way to check.

But the apps2sd thing has moved to the back burner. My big problem is the camera. Regardless of whether I use Barcode Scanner or the camera by itself, when I try to back out of the app to my home screen the phone freezes. Same thing if I just press "Home" instead of trying to back out. The buttons won't work at that point so I can't just press "Home" and get back that way. Just a dark screen. Only thing I can do at that point is reboot. Even then I have to press the power button a few times for the power off dialog bar to appear. Then it takes several taps to register, and finally the "Power Off...Yes/Cancel" popup appears and I can turn the phone off and then restart.

I use Barcode Scanner quite a bit, so this is a pita. The camera by itself I may not use every day, but almost. So either way this is a big issue. I have reflashed the ROM (after wiping) twice, rebooted more times than I can count, and I still have this same issue. I tried iMat Scanner in case it was something in Barcode Scanner, but that made no difference. Same problem.

which file is it that needs to be on the root of my sd card? i dont see a clear answer in the guide
Do you mean so you can store and run apps from your SD? I know that it is included with Fresh 2.0d and you need to partition your SD card properly from the RA screen. Here is where mysticmead told me the proper way to do this just today. I was doing the partition wrong. http://androidforums.com/all-things...uide-root-rom-faq-tutorial-18.html#post696837

Be sure you click the link in that post and read how to partition correctly and how to test it.

i mean the file youre supposed to copy to the root of the sdcard to root the hero. im not gonna flash. i just want to root and delete those useless sprint apps.
the first time i attempted rooting, i failed at: flash_image recovery recovery -RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img

OK, now I understand. That file screwed me up too when I rooted. Just go here > xda-developers - View Single Post - [Recovery] CDMA Sprint [07-Mar-2010] RA-heroc-v1.6.2 And scroll down to "Download." Download the 1.6.2 image file and go into your SD card. Delete the 1.5.2 img file, then copy/paste the 1.6.2 img file. Next, finish up with the manual root process. IIRC, that is about step 18 or so in the commands. Double-check and just finish the final few steps in manual. Takes a couple of minutes. Should be good from there or reply with results.

I'm going to assume that you have done nothing thus far....

Did you read this guide? It literally walks you through step by step on how to root your phone. If you read the guide, you would know that the first part teaches you how to root (yes, just root) your phone. Then later on it tells you how to flash a ROM. If all you are interested in is rooting, I suggest you find a quite spot to sit, and read read read this guide.

Better reply to tailsthecat than mine.

Tails, do what ccapasso suggested instead. Even if you did get to the step for flashing the image, reading, reading, reading the guide is best and you will be more familiar with what you are doing.

Code:

Code:
adb push recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img /sdcard
Pushing is equivalent of copy the file to the root of your sdcard. By the time you finished reading this it should be done. You'll know its done because the ouput will say something like transferred X bytes in X secs.
14:
Code:
Code:
adb shell reboot
This will cause the phone to restart automatically. Wait till it is fully booted to continue. (Also, make sure after your phone reboots that USB Debugging Is Still Enabled).

Removing the apps will free up some space.
