Root Guide to flashing customs roms

Re Titanium:

What and when should a person back up other than the auto, weekly backup of apps? When I go to Menu > Batch there are a lot of options. Specifically wondering about "Backup all user apps" vs "Backup system data" vs "Backup all user apps and system data".

Since I already have a NAND backup done for 2.1, should I wait to do any further backup via Ti until I actually get to the point of flashing a new Rom?

I've read in a few places that some "system" settings perhaps should not be restored to various Roms because they may conflict with the new Roms settings.

So basically, I think at this point I know just enough to be dangerous and I'm looking for somebody who's been down this road to let us in on exactly how they do backups/restores.

And whether or not this is the sticky we go with, we need one.

I haven't had complete success with Titanium. Now, that's just saying that my ringtone/notifications don't stick after I restore, and maybe some minor things. The majority of the heavy lifting is done for me though. The thing I love about android is that the rooting tools just get better and better.

Any news on apps2sd? :-P

How do I make a back up copy of the stock ROM with nandroid? I'm confused as to what nandroid actually is.

A "nandroid' is a backup of your ROM. Thus, if you are still stock and you create a "nandroid" backup, you are backing up the original (stock) ROM. Boot into Clockwork mod recovery, select nandroid and select backup.

I am sorry if this is elsewhere but my search turned up nothing. At least that i saw.

But can someone tell me how to flash a kernel?

I downloaded a hydra kernel but don't know how to install it.

Thanks. This forum rocks

when i download the cyanogen rom from the rom manager, and it asks to wipe and backup and i do that. it just keeps bringing me back to a completly wiped rooted phone, how do i get this rom on there? and I also don't know what that rom is saving as anyone know?

thanks so much guys!

Same here, I went into rom manager and downloaded the cyanogenmod and then I also clicked the google apps (froyo) and but I didn't choose either of the superuser options out of the extras section. I am rooted and have the hydra kernel running but this rom manager is the most confusing to me. Also, I have a lot of new stuff downloaded to my sd card, what can I delete that I installed along the way of rooting and installing the kernel.

I currently am running the 2.15.00.07.28 radio, with third wave and hydra 1.15 OV. I wanted to know if it is safe to flash Franken rom using rom manager directly over the top of my current rom? Or do I need to down grade to 2.1. Additionally would I need to change my radio?

Yeah you're good with what you're wanting. Main thing is to flash to Roms on the same OS (2.2 in your case) and ones that are known to work with your current radio. Frankenrom works great with the 2.15 radio, that is my current setup in fact.

When flashing w/ Rom Manager, I always wipe data and cache when flashing unless it's the exact same Rom and is just and update, then I might skip the wipe. Also Rom manager will give you the option to backup your current Rom which you can do if you wish so if anything goes south, you can go right back to your most current setup.

A word to the wise: Use ROM Manager from the Android Market to name your backups. That makes them much easier to identify. Also, don't use spaces in the names, ClockWorkMod will get confused.

Kind of a n00b question, but do you unzip the ROM before adding it to the SD card? Or leave it zipped up when transferring the ROM to the SD card? any help would be great.

Any help on icon packs, etc that are in zip format? I have the Rule The Air theme installed over my Virtuous ROM, but I have no idea how to take the icons from the zip and attach them to the corresponding apps. I do not know why this is stumping me, but flashing ROMs and themes is nothing, but such is life. Any help would be appreciated.

Yesterday morning I rooted my phone with unrevoked, now flashed a new ROM all with the instructions here in this forum. Awesome info and members willing to take the time to make things easier on the new guys like me. Aloha and mahalo!

I am rooted and want to use the GB keyboard from the OMGB ROM. I am currently using Virtuous ROM and really like it. How do I flash the GB keyboard to use with Virtuous?

are you talking about the gingerbread keyboard? You can download that separately. no need for a different ROM

Copy the ROM that you are going to use to the root of your sd card.

I have a quick and probably dumb question. When you say "copy the file to the root of your sd card", is that a folder that you create on your sd card? I'm asking because I just formatted an sd card to use exclusively for ROMs, and I was wondering if I had to make a "root" folder. Thanks for any help.

It should be /mnt/sdcard I think. . . or if you're mounting the card on a Windows PC, it will be the highest level - a.k.a. root (drive letter) folder.

HTH,
Mike

When i plug the phone into the pc, then go to My Computer, and I see 2 new "drives" there. (E) and (F) on my computer, yours may be different.

One of them is the sdcard, one is the actual phone.

Try to determine which of the 2 is your sdcard, and right click on the drive letter and go to "rename" change it to like "sdcard" or something so in future its easy to determine quickly.

Now left click on that drive to open it, so you see all the files. Dont go any further. This is the root of your sdcard.

2. There are some back-up options in the donate version that aren't available in the free version. I don't remember which one's but here's a link Titanium Backup for Android ? Official Site

In the Pro App you can freeze and unfreeze applications, save or delete links to your apps in the market even if you've deleted them from your phone so you can go back to them quickly. I also, think, that the ability to schedule multiple automatic back ups for your phone is only a Pro option as well.

Definitely were enough differences for me to go with the Pro and the developer is awesome at answering questions!

Hope that helps :)
