Root Guide to Rooting Without a Computer

Ya, obijohn the dev for the Bumblebee ROM put it in his site to help do a thorough wipe before installing a ROM.
Once you wipe and format you install the update wiper zip. It wipes everything and then some. Then you install the ROM and gapps.

Result: No residual data whatsoever.
 
That sounds handy. Do you know if it's limited to the OV, or if it works on other handsets? I should probably go check it out...
 
I'm trying to root my old OV, which I gave to my mom - it's not actvated, she only uses the wifi on it. I'm only rooting to get rid of some bloatware for her.
Downloaded gingerbreak 1.2 and enabled USB debugging (done this song and dance before)...while airplane was on...20 minutes later, no root, Gingerbreak FC's.
Turned airplane mode off, tried again - it's been 30 minutes and no reboot, app still says its rooting.
Anyone have a similar experience? A tip or other version of Gingerbreak I could use to make this work?
Edit - four fails/reboots later, finally worked :)
 
If you still have the original 2 gig sd card, try putting that in and formatting it. Then run gingerbreak. Sometimes it is picky about the sd card.
 
Just picked up a Huawei M835 for my daughter. It was $40 on clearance, and she needed a new mp3 player. I ran Gingerbreak six times to root it. I told my nephew about it and he had this analogy:
It's like throwing a sticky waffle at the ceiling, you might need to throw it a few times before it sticks.
 
That was about as perfect a picture of rooting with the Gingerbreak.apk that I've ever read.
On every failed attempt you need to reboot the phone. If after 12 min the phone doesn't reboot on it's own, then pull battery and start over(this counts as a reboot). If you get an error message you need to change back to the stock uSD card or if already installed, reformat.

Sometimes it can be picky about the uSD card. Riggerman1 is correct.

I am at this step and I don't know what to use for the recovery.img file! Do I use xioniarecovery.img or IHOrecovery.img? Or do I use something completely different??

I am worried now because I am half way through!
 
Which version, 1.2518.6 or 1.2518.4?
The Xionia is great for the Froyo ROM's but the VM670NH and the "Touch Screen" recovery work best for the Gingerbread and ICS ROM's (I suspect one of these are what you really want to install).
If you want to install A Gingerbread or ICS ROM just put the required recovery on the root of the sd card and install it like you did with the Xionia, It will replace the Xionia.
EDIT: Make sure you type in the name of the recovery in the code exactly as it is on the sd card. Hint: You can rename the recovery's to just recovery.img to make it easy to get it right in the code.

It's up to you as to what ROM you want to install, but you need the proper recovery for that ROM.
Make sure you make a backup of your system in the recovery in the "Backup and restore" section,select the backup option (this is called a nandroid backup).

Wait what? I can install Ice Cream sandwich on this phone??? How well does it run? Do I lose everything on it in the process? Does it work with Virgin Mobile afterwards?? Sorry about being a complete bone head about this. I just wanted to remove the VM bloatware, but ICS would be awesome if it is good on the phone.

I did do the backup as it said to do. This phone is my wife's. I already rooted my phone over 6 months ago (same phone). I think I used this method HOW TO: Root Optimus V (Virgin Mobile) - xda-developers and the recovery is something else, maybe stock? It doesn't have all the options of what I just put on my wife's.

Can I put the recovery image that is compatible with ICS and install ICS on my phone? I don't want to do it on my wife's she doesn't like change.

I think the only thing that doesn't work is the video portion of the camera. But there working on any an all problems as there being made aware of.
The Touch Screen recovery is the recovery to have.

You should make sure you make a nandroid in the custom recovery before you try to do anything else on your phone.
If the recovery only has 4 or 5 options, it's the stock recovery. Custom recovery's have 9 if you count the "Reboot Sysytem Now" option.
 
The BACKside is the best ROM out there for the V. It is amazing all the things you can do to it.
You need to check it out. Go to the BACKside thread and have a look around.
You'll end up having it on both phones.
 
Go to the first post. Go to just under all the screen shots. The download info is there. Once you have it installed you can go to the updater app and check periodically for update's, it will even check the md5 sum (this is how you can verify if the download is good/or corrupt).
 
i would suggest adding to the op using the app flash image gui.apk i used it it works great you can find it on the market for. 99 cents or go to sdx developers and get it free so no need for the terminal and all the commands.
