Root Guide to Rooting Without a Computer

it's there.
in the first post of this thread.

also just read this on the android central gingerbreak thread,

It finally worked. For anyone else having a problem with this, mine was solved by plugging in the USB cable while trying the hack. I wasn't doing that the first time. Yeah, I know that should have been obvious by the fact that enabling "USB Debugging" was a required part of the hack, but since nobody actually spelled that part out, I was just sittin' on the couch with my phone next to me not plugged into nothing trying to get it to work. Eventually the light bulb went on. :Op

ok so the only problem i seem to have so far is in terminal after i type this

cat_/sdcard/flash_image_>_/system/bin/flash_image(return)

i get a message that says sdcard/flash_image/: no such file directory
or something close to that
Somebody help please

Is the flash_image unzipped and on the Root of the sd card? What the code is supposed to do is take the unzipped flash_image and move it from the Root of the sd card to the /system/bin. If the flash_image is not on the Root of the sd card or is zipped it cannot do this.

When I download the gingerbreak link from page 1 to my phone, I get a file named 86082f7f239dbd1104a45699079d33b4.apk in my sdcard/download directory.
When I look at it it I see folders assets, res, META-INF, AndroidManifest.xml, etc. there.

Is this the right apk or did something go wrong?

Sounds like you got a bad download. I just followed the link and the .apk downloaded and installed fine. Tested it both on my phone and my laptop. Try it again.

You must have gotten a bad download. I just downloaded the zip and opened with winzip. All three files are there. When try to open it, just click on the zip and select open with winzip. I also downloaded to my phone and opened it with , all three files are there.

I tried to downloadd the file from my fone but it wont let me .. Lg optimus v.
How do I download them im new to all of this sorry

So how do I download the files to my phone

click on a download and it downloads...maybe I don't understand your question..?
If you can't find what you downloaded, use ES file explorer, look for the folder that says "downloads" (if your using the stock browser), open it, and the file you downloaded should be there. If it needs to be put on the root of your card, cut and paste it.

Basically, you download things to the phone the same way you download anything to anything-you the download link or button or whatever on the website, it downloads.

And a bit of friendly advice-not trying to be rude or sarcastic here- if your still working out how to download something on your phone, you should probably do alot more research/get more familiar with your phone and how it works before you attempt anything like rooting. Rooting without understanding how your phone works, what files do what and where they are located, etc. is how people end up turning their phones into very expensive paperweights. Once your rooted, you have the ability to *permanently delete* system files that keep your phone functional-you want to know what your doing.

I re-downloaded and it ended up installing fine, however I had some problems with BusyBox and stupidly uninstalled it and now I have lost root. The phone works fine otherwise, just no root. I have tried to get back to root with both superoneclick and GB again to no avail...GB gives me the "not really sure what happened here...try rebooting" message after it fails to install root.

Titanium Backup has a good copy of my root install (on sd card and dropbox) but I don't think I can get that back without root...anyone know if there is a way?

I still have IHO & xion recovery images on my SD card, but have not installed/flashed them--I assume these images are useless without root?

So I screwed up in several different ways here, other than that, my weekend was fine :-)

Not a huge deal since I still have use of an unrooted phone--and these phones are $65 at Best Buy right now so maybe I'll get another one. But I'm willing to tinker & mess around carefully, using PC & command line if need be...if anyone can point me to some resources or otherwise help...Thanks!

Are you certain you no longer have root? It's possible to be rooted and not have busybox. Try going into terminal emulator and see what your prompt looks like. If it's a "#" then you have root. If it's "$", try typing "su". If it changes to "#", you have root. If not, then, well...you don't.

I only get $...

Okay, at this point your best bet would be to (take a deep breath) start all over. Once you've lost root, it's often easier to treat it like you've never rooted before. Repairing a goofed up root job, on the other hand, can be a real nightmare. It sounds like you lost root before you could flash a custom recovery, is that correct?

Yes that is correct.

Give this a try, pull the battery then hold down the power button for thirty seconds. Then power back up and try again.

That worked. Not the first time though. The first time GB just quit, the second time I got the "not really sure what happened" message, the third time it just quit again, finally the fourth time it rebooted the phone and SuperUser is there.

In Terminal Emulator after su root SuperUser asked for root access, I granted it and now have #.

I won't be doing any more with this tonight, but let me know of any next steps...just follow the info on page 1?

Thanks a lot!

Good job! Get some rest, tomorrow we tackle Busybox!

OK I'm ready when you are but I just realized I need to partition my sd card. It is a 32 GB card with one FAT32 partition. I have quite a few apps there, both root-only and non-root apps. Some were moved there using Link2sd. Should I move anything back to the phone first?

What other partitions do I need - and will partitioning wipe data from the card? I have copied the sd card contents to a windows pc folder.

I have Easeus partitioning tool.

? Either you are misinterpreting whats going on, or I misunderstand Link2SD. To the best of my knowledge, Link2SD requires a second partition to link your apps to (usually ext2,3 or 4). I didn't think you could link apps to sd with just one partition. But, to answer your question, yes. If you plan to play with the partitions you need to move everything you can back to the phone. That, or just redownload from the market.

Rule of thumb for that is one partition for apps, 500mb to about 1gb. Optional, depending on your Rom, a swap partition, about 500mb. Then the rest of the card for media and such. Yes, partitioning will erase the card. Eaesus is a very good tool for this, considering it's free.

Link2SD did move most of my apps to SD card without any problems. Others were not moved with an error about missing partition or something.

I could not partition the SD card...Windows/Easeus allows only one primary partition, and my phone would not recognize the sd card with a logical (ext3) partition, despite having a FAT32 primary partition. I'm confused about that, but I guess I need to partition the card on a Linux box? I don't have access to one.

Anyway I'm ready to move on if we can skip this partitioning or if you can suggest another way to get it done. My sd card just has IHO recovery, xion recovery and flash_image in the download directory (I'll move them to the root.)

brotherswing, I am going to skip the partitioning bit for now. When you get a chance I'd like some BusyBox tips. I have downloaded it but have not run its installer, since this is what caused me grief the first time I tried to root. I'm not sure which version to choose, or if it matters. The Titanium Backup - overview screen says Root access: OK (BusyBox 1.18.4-Titanium from App) for what that's worth.

Michael323, could you open up a root file explorer and go to /system/bin. Scroll down to su
long press it if necessary and select properties. Post the permissions of su (example: rwxr-xr-x)
