Help Has Anyone Else Been Having Google maps navigation issues?

Joe Eris

Android Enthusiast
I've been experiencing some extreme lag, like an average of 10 minutes for gps to find me each time I open it, no matter where I am, wifi & network, I was also just reading about a group of galaxy users who have been experiencing the same thing recently & none of them have been able to find any kind of solution. Any help would be much appreciated

P. S. I tried un installing updates. It didn't help

Yes. I had a ssimilar issue and it tuned out I had to replace my sim card. Have you tried turning off vzw location services and using Google maps navigation? I tried using navigation with vzw services turned off and worked better but it was still not manageable. Mine would constantly be searching for GPS when I used navigation and now with new sim card, it locks almost instantly and keeps a lock pretty constantly.

I used Nav last evening and gps locked on within a minute or so and navigation was flawless to my destination. I'm on the .232 ICS leak.

The new google maps update removes the icon. You can remove the updates to maps and it will restore the navigation icon. I think the new maps looks great, but the navigation functions are only accessible through maps and it is cumbersome to use on the road. I hope Google brings it back as I liked to look and feel of the new app.

I just tried it out and it doesn't remove the navigation, it is just accessed differently. After selecting an address, it gives the number of miles down from my current location in the lower right corner. Click on the mileage shown and if it provides multiple routes, select the one you want... then click on the Nav icon to start it.

The new version is harder to use on the road so far... Several more clicks needed to get it running to a new address. As someone who uses this constantly, inputting 20+ addresses on the fly daily, it is disappointing.

I'll have to check this out. I noticed today that my Google Nav icon was missing when I needed to use it while out on the road. Luckily, I also have Mapquest Nav installed so I used that. I'll have to check out the new version through Maps.

You do know they do not recommend that you use it "on the fly"... that is a hazard as dangerous as texting while driving.

This only happened on my Bionic, not on my Asus tablet. My suspicion is that Verizon neutered the Google Maps Navigation icon in order to promote its stupid VZ Navigator app. Boo on Verizon!

Even so, its still harder to use when parked. For simple things like navigating home or to a friend's home, it was much easier in the old version. Before you say I should already know my way, I don't always know how to get back to a freeway in a particular place if I'm on my way home or perhaps I had meet a friend for lunch our dinner and we decide to go to their place to hang out afterwards. I've also found no way of just using the bird's eye view mode without a destination. In fact, using car dock mode v3, i could go straight to it.

The new Google map update seems to have put a widget called Directions in the app drawer. I used that to replace the blue arrow.
There are some redeeming features of the new update - such as larger screen fonts on the navigation screen. However, Google dropped the ball by eliminating the Nav icon. Perhaps they'll see the error of their ways, or one of our brilliant third-party app creators will develop a replacement.
Otherwise, the new update, though different, is fine. You just need to sit down and explore the new screens, etc. It took me about 15 minutes to figure out where everything is. It's all there --- history, places, most recent -- just need to find where they are now listed/located.
I took the new Nav up into the rural mountains north of here, and it kept a signal the whole way (100 miles) and the turn-by-turn voice worked great.

Also -- the original Nav icon (blue arrow) is still on & working on my Nexus tablet after the update. Weird.

Checked my app drawer and don't have this.
Did you slide the menu bar over to widgets in the app drawer? It is called "Directions."

Also just noticed that another widget I loved was wiped out by the maps update. It was a "Traffic Home" icon that would show you whether it was green, yellow or red traffic for your trip home -- usually from work. Loved that and it's gone. Sad.
