Root Has anyone stopped using SetCPU due to battery usage?

rsarno

Thank Me, Im Irish!
I was reading a post on here the other day from someone who said they noticed a significant jump in battery life after they uninstalled setcpu

i wondered how can that be?

So just wanted to know has anyone else experienced this? Or might that have been an isolated case, or user-error?

I think this can have something to do with your kernel. If you're using a kernel that's not optimized for SetCPU for whatever reason, it can hurt the battery life.

I quit using it because many of the new Roms/kernels seem to do as good without it. I get better battery life with a bare Myn's Warm (v3) than anything ive done with SetCPU.

I stopped using it once I flashed Lou's # 4 Kernel which is under clocked with screen off to 245/245.

I have a rooted Dinc running Virtuous 3.2 ROM (with its embedded "custom" kernel v3) and I use SetCPU to underclock my Dinc: (1) when the screen is off; (2) when the battery is < 40% and (3) if the battery overheats.

The result has been markedly longer battery life with only the stock 1350 mAmp battery. I happen to have a Seidio extended battery, I just haven't needed it since I started using SetCPU.

I used to use SetCPU religiously, but I've seen better battery life with Lou's #4 and Chad's without overriding the kernel's default settings. I know both of them put in a profile when the phone sleeps (I think both default to 245/245), but I haven't been able to make a SetCPU configuration work better than the default config. YMMV of course, and I know everyone's hardware is a little different, but mine seems to work better without it now.

Yeah, one thing I've learned is that each handset is truly unique in terms of which kernel and which ROM play best together. Because I'm a professional, not a hacker, I tend to be a little conservative (although I suppose rooting my Dinc and flashing another ROM is probably over the top what most other lawyers do), and since I've found a happy compromise, I'm not likely to mess with another kernel --- at least not yet.

It's just not worth the agita I suffer from when my Dinc is not functioning properly.
