The first week I owned the X, I got a bad phone and took it back for a new one. I knew something wasn't right when the phone loaded up, out of the sealed box, with ADW on it. Then the phone did FC's and random reboots constantly. Nothing I did seemed to change it so I took it in and they exchanged it. Otherwise, my new phone has been working for 5 months with no issues.

Bought mine on launch day. A few months ago my power button stopped working and had to do a warranty claim. It wouldn't work on any ROM including stock OTA so I knew it wasn't software.

I've had two replacements. My original phone lost all incoming call sound (I could barely hear the other person if I put the call on speakerphone, turned the volume all the way up, and put the speaker to my ear), and the second one had a loose back/search button and a blueish spot on the screen. So far number three's a keeper!

I love my DX, but... does anyone get the feeling there's way more hardware defects than, say, the iphone would get? Is this one of the things keeping apple kids away? I know, it's inevitable that a couple handsets are going to have problems, but it seems like it's a little disproportionate...

I had the same concerns about my HTC Desire which is why I put up this poll in the Desire section in the first place. The problem is that it might not be an accurate reflection as people who have returned their phones are probably more likely to vote. There are other factors that could skew the vote too.

So, I decided to repeat the poll in the most popular phone categories on AF in order to compare results. These are:
Desire
Incredible
Droid
Droid X
Evo 4G
Droid Eris
Galaxy S.

You can track the results here.

The only problem I've had was a blown speaker in the earpiece. hardware wise, the droid x its rock solid! Motorola knows hardware! I just wish they would leave the software to google.

I would say absolutely not. I have not looked at raw return numbers, but I have talked to many who had iPhone failures. You have to remember that most of the components in these phones all come from the same places. The X is just as durable as the iPhone. Now the Eris? That one had a major design flaw in which the usb connection was too close to the trackball and many owners had to get a replacement because it would cause the screen to continually shift one direction or the other. I remember that my Voyager had a design flaw with the usb connection in which it constantly broke. They ended up changing that design, mid-stream.

I have not heard of such with the X. Maybe I don't watch closely enough, but at least reported in these forums, the return rate seems quite low.

My phone ended up in a boot loop after a VZW update...I got a replacement (refurb) and the screen didn't work correctly, so I sent it back and got the phone I have now. I've had it for several months and it works flawlessly.

Never did. I've drop kicked my phone by mistake and it runs great still.

I put up the same poll in the most popular phone categories on this forum. Results so far for % of people that have sent their respective phone back for repairs:

HTC Incredible - 11.1%
Motorola Droid X - 20.8%
HTC Droid Eris - 28.6%
HTC Desire - 33.3%
Motorola Droid - 33.3%
Samsung Galaxy S - 33.3%*
HTC Evo 4G - 50%

Make of this what you will. It's not the most diligent of surveys so I'm sure people are going to shoot it down for flaws (some of which I can see myself). It's still useful I think. It'd be nice if we could get some iPhone results too.

*Not enough replies for the SGS yet.

Mine just died after about 3 months. I turned the screen off and it went to permanent sleep. Verified battery/everything else. Wouldn't charge, nothing.

Got a replacement that I'm on now. It seems to drain the battery a little faster than normal but it works ok otherwise.

I am on my 4th X.

1. Bought the X on launch day. I was one of the few people who had the camera completely stop working in the first few weeks. Verizon replaced it with no questions asked.

2. The replacement X was working awesomely. Then I dropped it. Screen shattered. It still works, but the screen was annoying.

3. Went to ebay and grabbed an X for around $300. Worked well at first, but I knew something was "off". Lock screen would always pop up during use and the phone restarted itself a lot. Pictures were not coming out well as the flash would go before the shutter would activate. The Wifi signal was half of my old X. Rooted it and it cured a lot of ills, but then the GPS ceased to work. Re-flashed back to stock and factory reset it a bunch of times. The GPS was shot.

4. Called VZW and gave them the scoop. Even told them I bought the phone from ebay (I am just too honest sometimes). Told them about the GPS issues. She saw that even my first X would have been less than a year old. They sent a replacement that arrived at my house the next day. Works perfectly!

Now I have a bunch of spare batteries and I use the shattered screen X as a battery charger!

Bought my phone off Amazon for cheap, didn't care to insure it, and it has been running great even with having dropped it while running on the treadmill and seeing it shoot across the room.

Amazon or Amazon Wireless??? I got a steal on mine from AW. Had it a week and a half and its been great so far. Done flashed it more times than I'm gonna say tho lmao.

Between the wife and myself we are on our sixth phone.
Her first one had the dead band of pixels at the bottom.
Second one had random dead pixels on the screen.
Third one would not transfer data and would randomly reboot.
Fourth one is the same as the third but she's learned to live with it. Actually as I'm typing this her screen quit responding. :-/

My first one just did funky things all the time like lock up at random times and not transfer data. Second one is pretty much the same as the first.

Had it two weeks. There was a area on the screen that the text and images would blur at. They sent a new phone via mail and it's been fine.

Never sent it back, but Moto is sending me a new battery door as mine is loose.

Maybe i'm just lucky (or imo, careful) but I have never had to send a gadget, phone, laptop in for repair/replacement. I get the feeling that some people are not as careful as they could be, and when their phone inevitably stops working, they blame it on a hardware defect. Of course there are going to be defects no matter what happens, but considering the build quality of the Droid X, I think some people blame it on external factors unnecessarily.

I remember reading one thread a couple months ago where the bloke was complaining that he had to get another replacement Droid X (his 6th). The chances of that are so astronomically low it has to be completely or at least partly user error.

And no, I have never had to send in my Droid X. Picked mine up Late July and I could convince Verizon employees I bought yesterday based on how it looks!

I sort of agree-- I think most often some fixable software bug happens, maybe user-caused maybe not, and people blame it on a hardware defect. I don't think it's so much a matter of not being careful with your phone, because these people seem to regularly keep their phones in some high-grade cases, but I think the less tech-savvy freak out when something goes wrong and don't fix it.

Sure, it's not necessarily their fault (though I bet sometimes it is), and sure, Verizon should be better at troubleshooting these kinds of things... but I think people cry foul too easily.

But then, maybe I'm just a cynic and things really do go wrong with the hardware frequently.

edit: I forgot to mention, that with Verizon/Motorola giving out refurbished handsets when replacing under warranty, and I find it very easy to believe that once something goes wrong with your first handset, you can legitimately wrack up a lot of bad phones going through refurbished ones.

Prior to owning an X, I could say the same thing. The first defect was definitely upgrade related, it killed the phone. The second one was a bad replacement (unresponsive screen). The one I have now is flawless. I'm pretty good with troubleshooting and software, but defects do happen. I'm not sure the X return percentage is higher than normal.
