Root Help a Noob Update his way outdated Rooted EVO?

Hello Forum,

I have read and read and am more confused than ever.

I have about a year and one half old EVO that is rooted. I would like some guidance on what I need to update to get this device up to current standards and in turn learn to ropes to have the knowledge and confidence to perform these tasks in the future without Bricking my phone.

My system settings are:
Andriod 2.2

Baseband 2.15.00.11.19

Kernal 2.6.32.17-gee557fd

Build 3.70.651.1 CL294884 release-keys

Software 3.70.651.1

Browser webkit 3.1

PRI 1.90_003

PRL 60687

See, really out of date!

I have saved everything via Titanium backup.
I have saved a NaNdroid backup via Amon Ra

I was going to flash update the most up to date combo "EVO_Radio_2.15.00.08.08_WiMAX_27243_PRI_NV_2.15_003." However, in the ROOTING for dummies guide it states that is probably a BAD COMBO with my older SW sets.

I would like to update my Radio/WiMAX/PRI/NV. Security Updates if any and anything else you think I am need of. Custom ROM later?

Thanks in advance!

I am really timid at the moment because I have been without my Evo4G for two weeks because my battery fully discharged and the phone was deader than dead. No lights or anything via the wall charger would not bring it back to life and no spare battery. Well I did not know the battery was full drained and I thought it was bricked. So I sent it out for a Jtag reset. Well the guy who did the Jtag just sent my phone back with NO explanation. He prolly plugged a fresh battery in and the phone booted right up and was like "Stoopid Newb" and set it right back. So, I get my phone back and I attach my fully drained battery and it's still dead. So I go to the Sprint Kiosk in the mall and they could not boost my original battery. The also "Supposedly" could not boot the phone with a NEW battery that they had. I think this was a LIE to get me to purchase new phone. The new EVO was only $35.00 swap fee but I am pretty sure they booted the phone saw I had Root and wireless tether and probably get a finders fee for pulling such devices from the field. Anywho, I go home and research the forums and learn about the Dead Battery in the Freezer trick. It Worked! Well, the Sprint store would not return my money and were very insistent that I take the new EVO 4g. I declined because I Love this one just fine. Just needs updating. Been a rough couple weeks without a phone!

all you need to do to update your phone is flash a rom. just flash a current rom like mikg3.11 that has the most current software version cooked in. this is from another thread but it has a nice breakdown on some of the current and popular roms out:http://androidforums.com/4487770-post5.html

and here is the list of the roms and kernels that we try and keep as up to date as we can:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html

do you know what recovery you have? if you do not have amon ra 2.3, then i would suggest that you switch recoveries to it. clockwork mod (if that is what you have) does not do a very good job at wiping and has been known to cause a lot of issues.

Thanks for the advice to just loading the mikg3.11 ROM package instead of loading radios and Kernal packages.

I am really enjoying this mikg3.11 ROM. So much more PEP and quickness. The ROM is also really basic like original like the basic 2.2 froyo which is just fine with me. Thank you all for helping a noob on his way.

I'll be back soon!

A few things to help in case you don't have.

1. Every Rooter needs Titanium Backup If you don't have it Get it. You will need Titanium Backup Root and after you have installed that then Purchase the Key for it. Well Worth the Money. In fact most of us in here would tell you this program is worth ten times more than what you are paying.

2. Stay away from ROM MANAGER. Its buggy, has caused major issues for people.

3. Use Amon RA Recovery. It is much better and much more reliable Than Clock Work Mod. We all suggest it and use it

4. When you update Radios make sure you have about 75% battery power and DO NOT EVER PULL THE BATTERY DURING THE UPDATE that is the one sure fire way to brick the device. Also no that Radio Updates do not necessarily get you a better signal.

5. Never unroot the phone because of an issue. You have much more available to you to help solve the issue being rooted than unrooted.

I'm sure there is more but your already rooted so I'm going to assume you know a few things anyway. Never feel like your questions are dumb they are not. We are here to help and always willing this forum inparticular has several AF Guides here that can lead you to the right answers.

If you think mikg is snappy now, flash a kernel! That's where the fun begins man. I was running old stuff with stock kernels for a while and just got into newer aosp stuff with the Mason kernels and I am convinced my phone doesn't need replacing for anything newer just yet.
