Root Help! Full Wipe not clearing Internal Memory! New ROM, no apps 2mb free.

Hey guys I'm desparate for some help here. I've been rooted for a long time and have been ROM hopping for the last 6 months.So it took me by surprise when I realized that newly installed ROMS do not have any free 'Internal Storage'.
Every ROM i try to install now,after a Full wipe(as well as cache and dalvik cache and battery stats) loads up but has multiple force closes.so much so that i can barely reach the 'Reboot' submenu after hitting Power. The only ROM that i seem to be able to install is SUroot's dGB which is insanely small but still leaves only around 2.5mb free.I keep getting the 'Low internal Memory' message.
When i go to manage all Apps, the biggest app installed is around 2.5mb. and hardly 15 other system apps but still Internal Storage used shows 144mb used.
I've tried everything,repeated wipes, re-formatted sd card,Settings>Factory data reset.

The only thing that seemed to work was restoring an older Oxygen Nandroid backup.Doing this i receive 24mb free in internal memory but with lots of bugs(trying to turn on Wifi displays 'error' n under the toggle and switches off).The nandroid i restored was of a perfectly working state.After the nandroid i performed a Full Wipe and did a fresh install of another ROM (Mildwild 2.9) and its back to 'Low internal Memory' and lots of force closes.
Last thing i remember doing without glitches was trying out Sandvold's latest ICS Rom.
Just to clarify I'm rooted,stock hboot,S-ON, CWM 2.5.0.7.

I cant figure out if ClockworkMod is somehow corrupted as it is not succeeding in performing a clean wipe. Please Help.:confused:
 
Hey SUroot, thanks for the quick reply. Yes i did try format from mounts and storage.Infact i formatted everything but 'boot' form that menu.


just to add. i also applied the A2SD zip just to try to move everythin to the SD card and then try to erase the junk data.But nothing seems to work.
 
If you can get dGB to boot, you *could* try to use revolutionary to s-off and then reflash recovery, however it may simply be best to use an RUU and return it to stock before doing anything else.

I assume you are NOT a PVT4 device with erase size 40,000?
 
I was considering returning to stock too. Will i loose root if i do? and what should be my course of action after returning to stock? and i believe my erase size is 20000.I followed your guide to root, to the letter. Thanks in advance.
 
everytime i install dark tremors a2sd.zip, it goes on without a glitch or errors. but when i boot and try to use Terminal Emulator and run 'a2sd reinstall' on 'a2sd cachesd' I get an error message saying 'a2sd not found'.Finding this a bit strange.
 
If you kept root, it wouldnt be stock now would it ;)

Forget scripts. We need to know what is going on with your /data partition.

If you format the data partition and use adb from a PC to see what is in there aftrerwards, if something is, there is clearly a problem.

I think you should also confirm twith adb that you are definitely 20000.
 
I've just confirmed that my erase size is 20000. Ran cat/proc/mtd on terminal emulator. Apart from that I ran a command last night on adb to check contents of /data and it returned 2% free (mtdblock5) after a format!! I forgot the command I executed though.it was something like '-dt f' or somethin.I was panicky and tried a lot of stuff from different sources.
Is there anyway to format the data apart from CWM's mount and wipe? And how do I check the contents after wipe?thanks a lot.
 
Fastboot erase userdata but that is only if you are s-off....

You could try adb shell, mount /data...

Then linux commands like ls -h (list contents human readable)....
Then whatever you identify use the rm commands for linux to see if you can remove anything.
 
Ok so I did as you suggested. I performed a full wipe,then using adb shell performed the data mount and erased everything in /data using '-rm -r'.I confirmed that the contents of /data were just an empty folder 'lost+found'.after this I performed another full wipe just to be sure and proceeded to install dgb again. And yet again I had just 3.4mb free after a fresh install.I'm really not looking forward to ruu and re-rooting. But if it'll have to be done,I got to step up to it.if you think of any alternative options do let me know or if you're up to it I could give you my teamviewer Id and you could remotely ;)poke around in adb ;)

Hey Rastaman,thanks for the reply. What im worried about is if i do return to stock and the damn low-memory problem still persists,I'm done for. Cause the Sense ROM wont get any memory to even start up,seeing as dGb itself is so tiny and allows for just 3.4mb free.
But Maybe thats just me being paranoid about RUU. Any thoughts? Would S-Off be a safer option? and then install a custom mtd just to be sure?
On the returning to HTC front,I'm out of my 1-year warranty period.
 
No the "internal storage" is the /data partition and roms go to the /system partition which is 250MB so don't worry about that
 
Yes. But what is happening as of now is all ROMS can be installed. Its just when they start up.when it reaches the first configuration screen,the one requiring permission for google apps and google account sign-in, that's when i get multiple repeated force closes ranging from bluetooth to process.phone. Correct me if Im wrong but I imagine it's cause these processes are not getting internal memory to load themselves into?
 
Ok here's a little something I noticed.I just wiped and reinstalled a ROM (Oxygen 2.3.2) and without starting the ROM, rebooted into recovery again and mounted /data through ADB and ran 'du -h' to list size of contents of /data and the size of /data returned a meager 4.8Mb with the new ROM. After this I rebooted into the ROM and the low memory-multiple force close errors persisted.On rebooting into Recovery, i checked 'du -h' from ADB again and the size of /data jumped to 35.1mb with data/data taking up 30mb,still not explaining how 144mb gets used up though.

Guess you're right SUroot.
I'll return to stock and repost in a bit,letting you'll know how it goes.

yeah i get what you are saying but at least if its stock you can contact htc. i suspect the nand chip is failing or something. theres no reason for this behaviour
 
Hey guys! So , I've managed to return to stock using the WWE 2.29 RUU. Now I've been on root so long,I've forgotten if 20mb internal memory free is standard on a newly stock-returned phone.
But I'm not getting any force close errors like before so that's a huge relief.
 
Ok so the low memory problem still persists despite returning to stock and there's a considerable lag while typing this. the internal memory seems to have dropped to below 20after I opened up market and hit 'agree' and now the low memory indicator is on.I guess approaching the service centre is my only option.

2 quick questions:
-Will the 2.29 wwe version give me problems in terms of the service centre denying me service.
-will I need to downgrade my hboot?
 
Hi Shauny,thanks for your input. As you can see my internal memory on stock is a mere 20 mb.A far cry from 147mb. I got a suggestion saying that my NAND may be having quite a bit of bad blocks.

SUroot, yes,I did require the goldcard(bless you for making me make one even though i thought i was unbranded :rolleyes:). I tried without it but got a 131 error.
put the goldcard in and i was back to stock in 3-4 mins.

I bougth the phone in India and using it here as well.We're offered a 1 year warranty here and I'm not eligible for it anymore seeing as I bought the phone in Nov 2010. So I guess changing the mainboard is gonna cost a bomb if my NAND is corrupted.
 
ahh i would have used the 2.3.3 RUU as its covered by warranty and you dont need a gold card.
I dont understand why they only offer 1year warranty on the handset as i was under the understanding that htc gave 2 year hardware warranty as the contract is usually 18months to 2years.
I would phone them up anyway and check.
 
You should install 2.3.3 from HTC dev then. HTC surely should give you 2 years warranty if you contact them directly. Just make sure you get the 2.3.3 HTCdev.com on there.
 
if its htc india who knows, from my workings with india based technology companies i can tell you that the htc outsourced counterpart will be much like the rest of them.

Rastaman, that about sums up similar experiences I've had with Nokia and Samsung in the past. Lets hope HTC is better on the customer service front.

Suroot,here in India,there are very few phones available on contracts.Mainly Iphones. The remaing phones need to be purchased outright i.e. no carrier locks or contracts.Maybe thats why we're offered just a 1-year warranty(minimum company obligation ;)).

Ok so I'm downloading the 2.3.3 update (from HTCdev - HTC Kernel Source Code and Binaries) as I'm typing this out. Now my hboot is 0.93.0001. will i have to downgrade it using teppics utility? If yes,to which hboot?
