Root Help hopefully......

I was referred here from another post and hopefully I can get some needed answers. Hopefully lol. First please understand that there are Android Dummies and then there is myself. I don't think that statement properly describes my lack of knowledge in this area. So on we go.....

1st can anyone verify this method:
How to Root HTC EVO 4G

2nd I use Total Protection App from Sprint to handle my Contacts. Will I be able to continue to use this method after Root?

3rd I have had no complaints about my phone and would have never considered Root until the last OTA. Will I be able to unistall this update or will I need to find a different Rom?

4th where can I find custom Roms(pending answer to above)?

I am sure I will come up with more before I make a decission on whether to Root or force a replacement device. All help is greatly appreciated.

1st--haven't used that but I would recommend reading this

2. Not familiar with the Total Protection app for handling contacts as google will store contacts and then restore them automatically when you sign in after a new rom flash.

3.I believe you can still root and use that stock rom being rooted....(see guide) but there are better roms out there trust me:)

4. In the 2nd post of that guide, there are links to great roms....see the staff picks section.
Sorry...this link

And, read carefully and make sure you understand, as best as you can, the rooting process. We will be here to answer any questions you may have k?:D

Edit: I dont understand that website you linked...it says Evo4g root, but the screenshots have the Evo4g lte stated? And so is the .zip file they want you to download....I wouldn't chance it.

well it is for the evo lte. not sure if it will work for the og evo. i would not try it. it might not even work anyways as the exploits are more likely different from each other.

use the guide that mikey linked.

Ok. Thanks for the replies. I do have a few important questions before I continue:

Do I have to/should I do a Factory Reset first to wipe all the installed apps and such from my phone? Nothing there I can't get back.

What happens if someone tries to call or send me a Text during this operation?

Will I have the ability to reinstall my apps such as GoSms to jump around the Sprint 160 Char limit or will I need to find Apps just for a rooted phone?

The process of rooting will wipe the phone. So a factory reset doesn't need to be manually done

If someone tried to call it wont go through. You'll get any mixed texts when the phone boots up

You can use all non-root apps just like you could before root.

Before you continue, can you confirm for us what phone you actually have? Is it the EVO 4G or the EVO 4G LTE?

Easiest way to determine this for someone new to these devices would be to ask what color the kickstand is on the back of the phone.

This is an EVO 4G also called the "OG EVO" (silver kickstand)

This is the EVO 4G LTE (red kickstand)

No. Need to do a factory reset. It will do it for you.

During the process you will not be able to receive calls as you will be in fasboot.

And yes you can use go SMS. I do.

Ok. Have everything downloaded but have 2 more questions.

1st do I have to use the newer version of HTC Sync or can I use my old version instead?

2nd Can I only do the HTCDev and load a Rom and go back later to remove the watermark or do I need to do that first?

1. Yes but it wouldn't hurt to update. You just need htc sync for the drivers
2. You mean the Captain method to remove watermark? Yes you can do that later

Ok. On way home from work to do this. Last questions I hope.

The window that is opened to get the Token do I leave it open or close it?

I am not as fast and good at my typing any longer so can I just leave a browser open with the instructions from the forums and use Copy/Paste or do I need to write that down and close my browser until I submit the Token to HTC?

You can leave the command window open after you receive your emailed token.
or you can close it...if you close it, you'll just have to open it again that's all
You can copy/paste I guess, never tried it but hey, why not?:D

Thank you to everyone!

Is done and Backup made. After my nerves settle a little I will attempt flashing one of the Roms I have downloaded. I will probably be back with many questions when I attempt to remove the WaterMark so hopefully all of you will continue to bare with me here. Am a 41y Noob lol.

Again, THANKS to all of you for helping me through. Without you I would not have attempted this.

Edit: is safe to delete the Nandroid from my SDCard after I have a copy on my PC correct? Or should I leave it on the SDCard?

NICE!!!!!!!!!! and AF will always be here so please do not worry about it.

as far as nandroids go, i usually leave at least two on the card. i leave my nandroid backup of my favorite rom and one of which i'm currently on. any others that i would like to keep, i save it to the pc and then delete it from the card. so leaving it on the card is up to you. nandroid backups do take up a lot of room.

Nice job!!!
Leave at least the most current nandroid on card.
Nandroids can be large so depending on the sd card size, 2 is good with at least the nandroid with wimax backed up on your computer or in the cloud.:)

Edit: see my reply? Similar to ocn's! Thats cuz he taught me!

trying to hijack this thread again, mikey? my fingers are this close to the report button:mad:

@Karayan sorry about this. mikey here is notorious for this kind of thing:D:D:D:D

Ok.....I have tried many of the Roms and nothing seems to be solving my problem. I think maybe i am doing something wrong. All Roms act the same as my updated OS as none will defaults links in Web Browser to my installed apps like before I got the new update. I have only taken enough steps with rooting to be able to Flash Roms. Any ideas on what I may be missing? Does my hboot being the newest have anything to do with it?

Edit: After playing and reading I found something I may be doing wrong. Is it important to have a Recovery Image? I check and when the Pc36 ran it said no Recovery Image found. If I need this where do I get it and is it version specific?

not exactly sure what you mean by default links. can you explain further exactly what is going on? and your hboot has nothing to do with software issues. what roms have you tried? what are you wiping? which recovery do you have

Sorry there. I was making an edit while you were replying.

What i mean is if i use the web browser and search for alternative browsers and UCBrowser shows up linked to Google Play and I click it it loads via Browser instead of the Market App. Same for Google+ pages,Facebook pages and etc. Before I got the update when I clicked the links it would ask for a default way to open it either Browser or App. Now just opens in browser.

Roms: mikmik,AlterRom,cm7, well almost every one listed.

I think you may have answered my edit by asking about my recovery. Are they specific to each ROM or just OS version?
