Root Help me please!!!!!!

OK so I ordered a htc evo on ebay and apparently it is rooted(boot screen says locked oow supersonic evt ship S on hboot 2.18.0001
I have been doing all the research and i downloaded ruu to return it to stock so i can get the phone activated however when im going through that process i get a error "140 bootloader error the ROM update utility canot update your android phone and forces me to exit I GOTTA UNROOT THIS THING PLEASE HELP!

How do you know its rooted? Can you go to settings about, software, and post what you see there?

Also tell us what your baseband version is and we can get you the right ruu

I was told by sprint it was rooted and that is why they cant activate the phone when they had me do ##02185# to actvate it id did nothing
also another note to get to my boot sreen i have to do volume up and ower instead of down....kinda wierd

Wheb you get to hboot try to select recovery and tell us what you see there

I get a phone with a red triangle and exclamation point in it and it does nothing

I doubt seriously the phone is rooted. if it was rooted it would say unlocked ship s-on or it would be s-off but by evidence you present it is not rooted.

ok lets see for sure. go into the bootloader. power off then press and hold power+vol down (you might need to disable fastboot, settings>apps>uncheck fastboot). at the top of the bootloader screen report back on everything that you see.

I agree that it sounds like it's unrooted....if it's locked and S-on, then you either don't have root access, or your phone is in an extremely weird state.

There can be several reasons for it. One that comes to mind is a bad esn number. It could have been rooted at one time and then had the securities turned back on. There are a few more things as well.
