Root Help Narrowing Search

Hello all. I had rooted my phone then recently unrooted it, (so glad because i had dropped it and broke the screen 2 days later...had to take it to the Sprint Store:D.. any way previously i had just done a simiple root with the stock rom. This time I would like to flash a custom Rom as well. With so many different roms how do a Noob like myself beging to decide.

I would atleast like to narrow it down to three, i assume i would basically have to use the rom for a few days to get the feel.

I just dont want my life to become rooting and unrooting lmbo thanks i have enjoyed this forum you guys rock!! I just wish Sprint Customer service was as useful.

Fortunately for you, we are here to advise and help you out.

Unfortunately for you, most people here do get lost in 'rooting/re-rooting' limbo with various ROM's, like me! So you may just yet succumb. :D

At any rate, I would break it down like this if I were you:

1) First things first - make a list of the things you need to work (ie: 4G, HDMI, 8mp camera, etc... as some ROM's do not support some of these features)

2) Decide if you want AOSP or Sense based ROM (or something completely different like MIUI)

3) Decide how theme-able you want your phone to be (some ROMs are easier to theme than others)

4) Lastly, consult this list: HTC Supersonic/ROMs - XDA-Developers

I would say the top ROM's would be: Cyanogen, Myn's Warm, King's ROM's of varying flavors, MIUI, Mik's, and Fresh. [forumites correct me if I'm wrong]

Also, use the forum advanced search function and search for "[ROM]". You can pull up screen shots, testimonials, bugs, changelog, etc...

That all being said - I'm a fan of AOSP ROM's myself. Each ROM will work differently on your phone compared to anothers' phone so it is important to decide on one that works for you (which more often times than not, this is what gets people into a never ending spiral of flashing and reflashing):D

And most of all, have fun!

well you could start by telling us what you want out of your rom and phone and we can make a suggestion. The easiest way to narrow down is do you want aosp or sense...then go from there...

If i were you i would use this link and the link in my sig though, they are more up to date and noob friendly than the wiki mentioned by czar in 4). It has some ancient roms on there that will mess ya up if you dont know what you are doing...

Good call - I thought had that link floating around somewhere too :D

now how do i add thanks cuz you guys like the A-team i went to another browser and came back and here you are. thanks to you all

I think i would have to look up the differences between AOSP and sense. Hdmi i dont need 4g is useful and definitely the camera. i dont really do the music and i have used the wifi so I would want that. I definitely want to dump all the stock stuff. I think first i will just begin reading and educate myself a little better.

That wiki is certainly comprehensive but i think its a little too comprehensive and overwhelming for a noob, next thing ya know they are on here because they flashed something based on 1.xx OTA and his phone wont boot because he has new radios lol.

Hope I didnt offend ya czar...wasnt intended at all

Ok well read away we are around if ya need help...

Sense based rom is what you are used to, its what your phone came with. Sense is a UI, an overlay, created by HTC that is placed on top of android x.x.x. It includes your launcher and some apps and the way these things interact etc. Basically a sense based rom is a modified version of the HTC Sense rom your phone came with, they pull out bloatware, optimize it, change the themeing, add ons, hacks, etc. It still has the sense interface and all the widgets and clocks you have grown accustomed too.

AOSP is Andriod Open Source Project. Basically the beauty of android is that they release their source code to the public. It starts with source code, vanilla, os. Then devs build on this code. CM7 is by far the most popular AOSP. Some devs will then build on the CM7 build instead of the source code itself. AOSP roms are slimmer and more streamlined. THey do not have sense UI, they do not have sense widgets, they do not have sense :) they will look completely different to you.

A lot of people including myself like AOSP better, because it to me feels less "clunky" Sense seems overdone to me and I like my phone a little more based on what google intended before HTC jumped in :). Sense has some great functions but its too much for me. Also AOSP is generally faster and smaller.

SO sense is to windows what ASOP is to MAC?

Rooting is a much more intricate process than I thought.

you have to backup
root
then flash the rom?

so what is the purpose of changing Kernels. lol I have to take my hat off to the developers I just thought they were phones lmao ok i knew better i am not totally green. I catch up quick. I took a computer class at the community college.

Seriously I been around since Tandy..

Not at all! Thanks for pointing that out - as I have had radio problems in the past and believe me it was worrisome as I was new to rooting at the time.

It's pretty straight forward once you get the hang of it.

Backing up is important so if you mess up or forget a step you can get back to a usable state.

Changing kernels is something you could do when you are a bit more comfortable with flashing different ROM's. They add or augment functionality such as better schedulers, superior battery charging, faster hardware utilization, overclocking, etc... typically low-level component work is handled by the kernel.

You'll have to play with different kernels because your phone maybe wont like a kernel that is well-liked by another phone (could be the same hardware but acts seriously different).

aosp all the way for me, theyre indeed tougher to get up n runnin fully, but well worth the effort required.... oh, and the themeing i found to get easier with the right launcher... launcher pro is soopah slick, and uhhhhh... whats that one with the clover called? go launcher methinks. you might find yourself a flashaholic very soon due to the variance of how each phone reacts to diff roms/kernels until you find one that rocks yer socks. And yeah, go nuts with it, just make nandroid backups before you take a leap with a rom or kernel :)

yes the world of kernels is as in depth as the world of roms and in my opinion more important to the function of your phone. There are numerous options to kernels and you'll want to read up as much on them as you have on roms...there is cfs & bfs (schedulers), sbc & non sbc (superior battery charging), HAVS & no HAVS & HAVS more & HAVS less (Hybrid Adaptive Voltage Scaling), UV & no UV & SVS & SUV (Undervolt, Static Voltage Scaling), HDMI support, and every combination in between, to top it all off you can adjust the under or over volt yourself...read up :)

dont get me wrong flashing a kernel is easy, easier than a rom, and most will work for you without doing anything but to find that sweet spot between battery and performance youll want to know what all they can do.

SO sense is to windows what ASOP is to MAC?

Not quite. These are two completely different OS's. But if you look at it as they are just computers, than I guess it's probably a fair way to look at it.

If you decide to look into linux it becomes easier. I look at like comparing KDE to gnome.

well mac is unix, so its closely akin to linux, which basically means that if youve ever peered under the vaneer of IOS to see who's behind the curtain pulling the strings, then you can compare those apples to those oranges ;) clear as mud?

Yeah, isn't mac more close to bsd though? I forget. (not that it really matters, it all stems from the same thing. It's like we are comparing red apples to green apples, they are all apples.)
But the op was looking at it as windows vs. mac, and I think it makes more sense as kde vs gnome.

Yeah, whenever i ssh into my ipod it's full on *nix directories. :)

fair enough lol and yes, since bsd is unix code, then its darn near identical to mac os, but how many folks even know what bsd is? LoL :P
