Root Help, please! Flashed zip-killed network connection

mrcmaher

Newbie
Hello All,

(Sorry this might seem long but if you are good at rooting it's a quick read)

I could use some help. I have a rooted Eris and I have flashed a few different ROM's without a problem (New to rooting and flashing). I was recently running xtrsense and tried to flash a lockscreen called 3ring.zip. After that my network was lost. I do not have a nandroid backup (I now know why I should although I thought I did the first flash but can't find it now) and have re-flashed, wiped, factory reset numerous times with no luck. Everytime I do the phone goes through the setup but tells me that I don't have a network and to use wifi. It's not my Verizon account because I have reconnected an old phone in the meantime with no problem.I even installed a flashback zip to unroot but it doesn't work (it tells me E: No signature (1873 files) and E: Verification Failed and Installation Aborted).

I could really use someone's help.

Thanks,

CJ

Answered this last night on your post on xda.

Did you try to re-activate the phone? (In other words, dial *228, choose option 1)?

The lost data happened to me on another ROM once and I Nandroid restored xtrSENSE, reactivated as described above, verified that I had data, and from that point on it worked fine.

Thanks for responding.

I did the *228 trick and it still tells me that I have no connection to the network. I am considering flashing a radio but I know that it can be hazardous but at this point I can't think of anything else.

Long-press on the power button. This should bring up a menu.

If "Mobile network" is turned off, try turning it on. This would, of course, be it. If it is on, try toggling it on and off.

As for the Flashback ROM problem, what I would do (if you want to go that way) is to flash the version with the radio - this will give you the latest Verizon radio. Download it to your PC, copy it over to your SD card (to make sure that you have a complete download), make sure that your battery is very well charged, and then try flashing Flashback. (Make sure to wipe Dalvik and Wipe data/factory reset first.)

Flashback_21 link

Also make sure that you read the "IF YOU ARE FLASHING THE RADIO:" under the instructions!

If that still does not fix it, try calling Verizon to see if there is a problem with your account that they can fix. At least with Flashback you will be stock, not rooted, so anything that they ask you to do will work with whatever script that they have. You can tell them definitively that you have already tried a factory reset.

You'll have to re-root afterward, but that should be pretty simple. You can get xtrSENSE back on, get it set up the way that you like, and don't forget to Nandroid backup at that point, so you have something that you can easily go back to.

I will try toggling it on and off. I tried the Flashback ROM with the radio and had no luck (that was the one that got me the error message) I will try to download it again and re-flash it. I also am using a phone right now that is getting data just fine so I don't think it's my account.

I really do appreciate you helping me and I will continue to try all of these things in the hopes that something works.

There are only two ways this would occur.

1) You did not successfully transfer/download the (flashback) .zip file to the phone correctly, and the copy of this .zip file on the phone was corrupted/truncated.

2) You/somebody unpacked the zip file and re-zipped it without the signatures (this seems highly unlikely).

I will assume that it is #1. Please read up the many threads here in this forum about how to use "md5sum" or ScaryAlien's "AFV" app to check the signatures of files you use after they have been transferred (or downloaded) to the phone

You can get AFV for free from the market - so you will need to do this with WiFi since your mobile network seems to not be working.

I actually go the Flashback to work but I still cannot get the data network. Any suggestions?

With the flashback (21) ROM still installed, perform a Factory Reset.

After the reset, the phone will attempt an Activation upon the first boot.

After it activates, wait a little bit until the phone has finished booting, and try browsing to a web page, or any other activity - are you seeing the 3G indicator active?

eu1

[ Edit ] The reason for doing this is because the recovery boot is the mechanism by which the "factory reset" is performed, even though you click on something in the main OS to launch this activity. The "custom" recoveries for the Eris do not fool with activation status of the phone, but the stock recovery DOES. That is why a stock recovery needs to be used to clear activation data (if and when it becomes necessary). Good Luck!

I followed your directions with no luck. What's the next step? :)

Well, I'm inclined to say call Verizon. You have a fully stock phone which has been activated and can make voice calls (you didn't say this, but rather just a vague "no luck" statement), but can not do 3G.

It's either a hardware problem with the phone, or something on Verizon's end of things. (I suppose you could double-check the mobile network configuration under Settings, but these should be enabled by default on a stock ROM - you are not in an area where "National Data Roaming" needs to be on, are you?)

PS just curious - you could elaborate some more details about "3ring.zip" ?

Sorry, I can call to activate the phone but I do not get 3G. In fact, under mobile network it seems that the phone wants to toggle to connect to the network but then "grays out" and just says connecting. Occasionally if I toggle the airplane mode I can see a 3G pop up. I am not so sure it's a hardware problem since it happened after flashing a rom (but you certainly know more than me). I have called Verizon and they seem to think its a software problem.

As for the "National Data Roaming", I didn't have to toggle or check this before so I can't imagine it's a problem now especially since I have flashed back to a rom that I had no problems with.

What about re-flashing the radio?

I am assuming it was the 3ring.zip which was supposed to add a gingerbread type lockscreen but I also flashed a GSB rom and then read (after having problems) that it has knocked out the data connection for some other people but I am too inexperienced to understand the steps they require.

Hmmm. Subsequent to the factory reset, have you additionally performed any *228 procedure? (If not, give it a shot.)

Also, please toggle through all the network options (Home only, A, B) etc before & after each step to see if this a roaming/PRL issue.

An actual link/URL to the page from which you downloaded "3ring.zip" would be helpful (yes, I have googled for it).

I have done the *228 option 1 and 2. I have also checked to see if it is a roaming issue. I really just think it's something that flashed incorrectly (even though I follow directions on everything like it's a hand grenade) but I found the 2 things that were flashed before I noticed the problem. One is the 3ring.zip and the other is the GSB rom.

Here is the 3ring.zip: (It's toward the bottom of the post before the screenshots as "Sense 3 ring Lock screen")

[ROM] 08/04/2011 DeadlySense V2 update 2.3.3 Htc Sense ui [Gingerbread] - xda-developers

Here is the GSb flashed:

[ROM][10/15/2011] GSB v4.1 | CM7.1.0 [2.3.7 GingerBread] - xda-developers

I cannot thank you enough for looking into this. I got this phone as a gift and it breaks my heart that it's not working now. I will do whatever I have to to get this to work.

Thanks again.

I've been PMing with mrcmaher and we've been through making sure that Mobile Networking was turned on, getting Flashback running, dialing *228 option 1 and 2 (which supposedly both complete successfully.) He's called VZW tech support, who reactivated the phone on their end, had him factory reset (this was after Flashback was on, so it goes through the activation on first reboot) and then they gave up on him when it still did not work, strangely enough. Also, apparently, despite *228 activation working, the phone cannot place phone calls or, presumably, send or receive text messages. (Did I get all of that right, mrchamer?)

Ok, so if I have all of that right - and I think I do - it suggests to me that the radio is fine (he did flash the Flashback with the radio), since that call can be made. I can't see how flashing a radio will make a difference at this point, and would require re-rooting anyway.

My next suggestion is to go to a Verizon Wireless shop that does tech support and ask them to try to get it working for you. The phone is stock, so they won't refuse working on a rooted phone. If the local VZW store doesn't do tech support any more, try calling support again until you get somebody who can resolve the issue.

My other idea is that there is a weird VZW 3G outage in his area right now, but that seems terribly unlikely as well. Of course, it could be that the phone itself is bad...

Here is the 3ring.zip: (It's toward the bottom of the post before the screenshots as "Sense 3 ring Lock screen")

[ROM] 08/04/2011 DeadlySense V2 update 2.3.3 Htc Sense ui [Gingerbread] - xda-developers

And just to answer this one, that Sense 3 ring lock screen is *ONLY* for the DeadlySense ROM. If you were running xtrSENSE, it would not have worked on that ROM. Completely different Android builds.

Also, just re-reading the original post:

It's not my Verizon account because I have reconnected an old phone in the meantime with no problem

If you reactivated an old phone on your account, are you 100% sure that the Eris is listed as your phone on your Verizon account, or is the old phone?

Well, given that we have (also) in the mix multiple phones being used on the same account, I'm reluctant to add anything further to this discussion. (I note that mrcmaher never mentioned in this thread that he couldn't make voice calls with the phone even once).

But, I'll throw this out for consideration.

It has never been obvious to me what the "nvram" file in the PB00IMG.zip files are used for. They certainly do not correspond to any of the partitions on the Eris, as do each and every other image file in the PB00IMG.zip.

On the off chance that the the nvram files are read by the bootloader, and then written someplace (where?) into the phone by the bootloader, the only way to get any closer to a factory phone condition is to install a PB00IMG.zip file using the bootloader.

As mrcmaher has already installed the FlashBack21 ROM, his "misc" partition should allow bootloader flashing of the "Root" PB00IMG.zip file:

Eris_RootROM_v2.19.605.1_PB00IMG.zip
107,427,740 bytes; MD5 signature: 63eacc5ede3b179f95dc22d8ef585f94
MultiUpload.com - Eris_RootROM_v2.19.605.1_PB00IMG.zip.

Once that is done (rename the file to PB00IMG.zip, place it in the root folder of your SD card, perform a "md5sum" checksum of the file on the SD card to make sure it is not corrupted, charge the phone fully, and then boot into the HBOOT mode), then:

- perform a factory reset,
- go through activation on the next boot
- for good measure run the *228 call manually one more time.

If this works, then good - note that the old "Root Rom" flashes a pretty old radio firmware. You can either re-root and flash a radio (by itself), or root, unroot with FlashBack21+radio, and then re-root again to end up with a phone with a newer radio.

Good Luck.

erisuser1,

I am not sure what the "multiple phones being used on the same account" has to do with this but I have one other phone because when one doesn't work...I have an old phone to use that does work. I think that's pretty normal. And to answer your question I attempted a call that was met with a recording saying that I could use a credit card or make a collect call.

I will try to follow the advice you gave here. I will have to read up on the terms as I am not familiar with some of them. I will try to update what has happened after your advice unless the questions that I have answered in this post have given you more insight.

Thanks,

CJ

I am positive that the new phone was connected because in my attempts to fix this at home I have to switch phones through my online account which is a quick process.

Do you have your old phone turned off when you try to re-activate the phone using *228 option 1?

Again, this is something I think may be best tried hands-on by tech support at a Verizon Wireless store. Try that next.

You only need to add the new phone once through the online account. After that you switch phones by turning the active phone off then dialing *228 on the other phone.

I have successfully switched phones MANY times. That's not an issue. It's a 15 second process on my verizon online account. I have to switch many times a week to try to fix the eris and the other phone has NO problem with data so it's not the switching process or I would have a problem on both phones.

Just curious - is there a reason why you do not want to try bringing it to a Verizon Wireless store?

Or try switching phones using *228?

He's done that, plenty of times. He even called VZW tech support and they gave up on him - telling him that the network was not seeing the phone. That's why I am suggesting having a tech support person take the phone in hand and try to resolve it.

I suppose it's possible to re-root the phone, flash a new radio, and hope that this solves it. But he was having issues at the start, flashed a new radio with Flashback, and was still having issues. So, now that it's unrooted/stock, I think that this is the perfect time to see if a technician can solve it before we suggest a step that requires rooting.

(My other idea is to go through the #PROGRAM# settings but I don't know what they are supposed to be, and my Eris is currently not activated.)
