Root help save a brick

Thank you both for helping me try to figure this out.

I appreciate it a lot.

I will for sure check out the video and run the RUU when it's done downloading.

I tried to rename the PB00IMG.ZIP to update.ZIP and chose "Apply sdcard:update.zip" from Android system recovery. The update package verification fails.

If you think of anything else let me know.

LOL...no problem...we're not eu1, though (he'd zero-in on the "root" issue, if you will, right away), but we're tryin' ;).

Sorry, I didn't reply sooner, but I kept hitting refresh on the bottom of the first page and didn't realize it had rolled over to page two, LOL  :).

It looks like the phone you've got had the v3 leak already installed on it and wasn't rooted, right? (I think we've addressed this before, right? There's no custom recovery on it, right?) and that's keeping you from installing the base root ROM since its version number is indeed older than the v3 leak.

I'm hopeful the RUU will work for you (I'm hoping that the version checking is irrelevant for that utility).

Cheers!

I got the phone from my Dad and I know with certainty he didn't do anything to it. Verizon set factory settings two or three days ago when I switched it to my account, that may have been my biggest downfall. If I had to take a shot in the dark I would guess they updated it.

I do not have root.

I cannot recover it. I can give you the message but when I go into recovery it says it cannot locate ugh hold on I'll, ok:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

Yeah, that's what you see in stock recovery...

By the way, 13kyl, you've been exceedingly patient and helpful to not only us, but with yourself. I saw from your first post that you've been at this for a while...

There's still hope...

Well the way I see it, you guys don't have to be helping me do this. I really am very grateful.

I am running the RUU and I keep getting:

ERROR[170]: USB CONNECTION ERROR

followed by ROM Update Utility cannot connect to your Android phone etc.
Check USB cable etc.

It seems no matter what state I have the phone in.

Hang on...I can send you a link to HTC Sync and/or I can email a collect of USB drivers that should work for your phone / PC combo (HTC Sync usually works pretty well, but its yet another download (just to your PC, though)). If you are familiar with installing and updating USB drivers, you can just send me an email (scary.alien@gmail.com) and I'll reply with about a 10MB .zip file that contains a bunch of 'em that I've collected over the last year or so--one of them should work).

Lemme find the HTC Sync link first, though...

ooooh wait... how was it you enter "RUU mode?" hold power/send/vol up and down at the same time?

try that from powered off state and see what happens.

OH! You know what I had been working on this with my laptop and switched to my desktop. I thought I already had the drivers but that was on my laptop. OOPS.

I think I still have the drivers on my laptop, hold on.

I tried this and I get

CLEARSTORAGE
Delete all user data?
<ACTION> Yes

yeah i just tried it and got the same thing. was just getting ready to post it. i tried every combo of key pressing i could tink of and they all led to either fastboot,or to clear storage.

I already had HTC Sync downloaded from last night I think.
Anyhow I've installed it, seeing if it will work.

i assume youre running the installer with the phone allready booted ito fastboot mode?

when i ran it,i had the phone in charge only mode, and the installer booted it to fastboot. almost every time,it would just keep trying to talk to the bootloader until it gave me an error, then id run it again with the phone allready in fastboot and it worked. have you per chance just tried running it a second(maybe even a third ) time with the phone plugged in?

dammit we need to figure out where i saw the driections for getting the phone into RUU mode

Been a while since I've run it, but this thread (that I linked earlier) basically indicates you hook the phone up and run it (the RUU)...

Lemme grab my Eris and just hook it up...

Yep. I just ran the RUU and it appeared to install new USB drivers itself and didn't turn my phone on until it was at the screen asking you to confirm that the phone was hooked-up and turned on.

Pretty simple...

The RUU doesn't look HBOOT mode...it hung until I put it in FASTBOOT mode.

same here. talked to the phone just fine in fastboot, hung in hboot. one thing thats prolly irrelevant is that i have PDAnet installed. when i plug the eris in in fastboot mode, the "PDAnet device recognized" box pops up.

in fastboot i let it get all the way to the step where you click next to update. so this should work for him... :(

Yeah, I'm a little stumped...and tired (probably not at tired as 13kyl, but still).

I'm going to call it a night and maybe fate will intervene between now and the morning...

Thanks again for your awesome help, Scotty! Maybe something will occur to one of us in the morning.

Cheers!
