Root help save a brick

i have one last question, tho im pretty sure i know the answer.

would the s-on fastboot prevent us from somehow pushing jcase's "flash any ruu" misc img?

i dont know enuff about adb to change the adb commands to fastboot commands or id have allready tried it :D

other than that,im sorry we didnt have luck with your phone kyle :( but i do think your plan on buyin a working, broken screen eris and then combining him with yours is a good one :)

Scotty,

I'll take a quick stab at this since I restored my Eris back to its S-OFF, GSB state before I crashed-out last night.

With adb, you have to have the corresponding adb daemon (server) running on the phone. This, of course, implies that the some part of the operating system is up and running enough for adb to be active (which is where eu1 was looking for Kyle's phone to be responsive to the adb devices command in hopes of communicating with it with other adb commands (possibly ones that might allow us to re-flash the misc partition)). You'd also have to have write-access permissions in order for any flash_image command to be successful which is why eu1 was hoping that the phone might have been partially rooted, etc.

With fastboot you don't need the OS up and running, but to do anything (flash) really "cool" / ;) powerful, you need the S-OFF bootloader.

Its also a little interesting the little things / issues that I found last night while re-rooting using jcase's 1-click app and flashing the custom misc.img file so I could get around the issues that Kyle was having. There are subtle little things that are not documented (that really should be) that would make life a lot easier for folks. It was easy for me to get around since I have a few miles under my belt, but its certainly easy to see how folks get waylaid.

Cheers!

thanks scary... im off to work, ill check in later :) kyl13 keep us advised of your phone adventures/what you end up with, etc.

Sorry about not being around, I actually fixed my phone! I tried different ROM's to see which would work and I found one that let me install and everything has been great! I'll post a link if anyone needs it. All I did was put it in my Micro SD card, turned on the phone holding the volume down rocker and asked if I would like to update my phone. It was as simple as that. Now that I know how to bring the phone back to life, I may take a swing at rooting and playing around with it. Thank you for asking, I greatly appreciate it!

Ryan,

That's cool  ;). I think eu1 was looking for a two-fer (i.e., birds-at-one-time), LOL.

Glad you are up and running again.

Looks like you loaded the 2.1 v3 Leak (search for the MD5 sum of the file you referenced above (1c0b0182356242a9d673a661e7458587) in this web page that eu1 created over on XDA: [HTC ROMs] Consolidated HTC Eris RUU/OTA/ROM URLs - xda-developers) to see this.

You likely also got an OTA update pretty quickly that was probably last year's July-2010 update followed by a much smaller (13MB) March-2011 OTA update too (at least that's what my phone did yesterday ;)).

Glad you are back up and running. Let us know if you need any rooting info (look for eu1's http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html thread for the best information regarding this).

Cheers!

Scotty,

This is pretty-much for you since I'm betting eu1 has already seen / researched this.

There's the source for the fastboot utility publicly available:

Index of /android/mydroid/system/core/fastboot

and here's the fastboot.c file:

/var/www/vhosts/netmite.com/android/mydroid/system/core/fastboot/fastboot.c

Given your penchant for discovery, I thought I'd feed it a little with the above ;).

You might have noticed from the download path above, that "The fastboot source code is available in the Android open source repository and is compiled whenever you build from that tree." (quote taken from HTC - Developer Center), so, if you've downloaded one of the Android source versions, you've actually already got it.

Some interesting and semi-familiar stuff in there for you to peruse. One thing I don't see are some of oem-type commands we used above...?

Anyway, maybe that's a mystery you might be interested in unveiling :).

Cheers!

Hello again if anyone is still checking in. I'm posting from my new used Eris

I still ordered another Eris with a broken screen from eBay for $17.50 as resurecting my fathers phone has become a matter of principle.

Still willing to give anything a shot as I have a test phone now. I think I will wait on rooting until my dad's phone OS back online.

looks like I will be trying eu's universal Eris root for dummies soon. anymore resources for perusing would be awesome.

We're still here ;).

Excellent choice! I think eu1's got references to some older ROM's in the doc, so you might want to consider xtrSense for your first ROM:

[ROM][GPL][3/15/2011] xtrSENSE5.0.1 [cache2cache,apps2sd,oc,jit]-HTC Sense - xda-developers

or xtrROM: [ROM][GPL] xtrROM5.0.1 odex,cache2cache,apps2sd,jit,lwp,oc[3/29/2011] - xda-developers

I'm sure the others might have some sage advice for you, too.

Cheers!

Scotty and Scary, if you run in to any more interesting threads (if you remember) give me a heads up as I would love to follow along and see what else I can pick up.

Thanks for the rom suggestions I will try those when eBay phone arrives. just occurred to me though I will have to make sure and keep the (meid hex number I think) I'n a safe place if I'm going to start swapping guts.

Man, I love this phone!

I don't know if you've found them already or not, but there are several videos available on YouTube that show the glass/digitizer replacement process. I would look at as many of them as you can - some are better than others. (Do a search on YouTube - something like "Eris screen replacement" or "Eris digitizer replacement" or "Eris cracked screen").

This one is quite good:

YouTube - ‪HTC Droid Eris - How to replace the broken digitizer (Touch screen)‬‏

There are some good threads in the Eris section on both AF and XDA that discuss this topic (glass/digitizer replacement), but I don't have the links for those posts at hand.

In particular, I recall that someone who bought a digitizer (around $30, iirc?) was able to find a vendor that shipped a small plastic tool which is used to wedge open the Eris without dinging it up.

The way you are doing it is less expensive - but you might want to poke around on-line to see if you can find one of those tools for a couple of bucks.

cheers

eu1

we will sure try to. im glad you at least learned some things, and made it into a somewhat positive expierence. glad you got yourself a used eris to play with and still intend to fix the other. thats pretty cool

rest assured that as long as you dont use clockwork recovery, and dont pull the battery during an hboot pull, the eris is a tough lil bugger and almost impossible to brick. as scary will tell you mine has been the guinea pig on some pretty funky experiments

and scary, thanks for the links as always. ill check them out.

yea thats what happend to my eris but my eris wont turn on ... and idk if it charging or not

Erisbots,

Welcome to the AndroidForums...sorry this is one of your first few posts...

Well, not being able to power your Eris on is a bit of a hurdle...;)

You get nothing on your screen? No boot image or anything?

Cheers!
